Half-Life 2 Release Dates?

Half-Life 2 set for 26th November in Europe on Eurogamer.net admits that Valve's shooter sequel has yet to achieve gold status before mongering a rumor they've come across that a November 26 European release date is to be announced soon and that the North American release for the game will be November 23. They cite "retail sources in the UK" for this information, though there's no indication where this originated beyond that. They contacted VU Games about this and learned: "There is a good chance Half-Life 2 will make it before this Christmas. We're targeting the holiday season." They also have word from Valve's Doug Lombardi saying "Unfortunately, I do not have a release date from VUG right now," going on to express their own confidence this was just a smokescreen, saying Doug was "no doubt under orders to wait until it's 'officially' announced." They also have word that online reviewers will not get pre-release versions of the game.

I get a feeling it will be good just looking at the outdoor shots. After the dark closet of DOOM, this is what a 2004 game engine is supposed to offer people. Wide open vistas, light, colorful models, light, many different interesting characters, not PDA messages, light. Did I say light? You can actually see the game you paid money to buy?

Yes there is lots of light in HL2, just like the original engine or the quake2 engine or the quake3 engine or the unreal engine etc etc.
Doom3 was set indoor in a space station with failing power, surprisingly it was dark in places due to a lack of light and/or power. What it was full of was reealtme shadows and damn good realtme lighting interaction off all the surfaces and monsters etc.
With a few simple console commands "Let there be light!":
set r_lightScale “5”
set r_skipDiffuse “1”
set r_skipBump “1”
set r_brightness “1.5"
Now Doom3 almost matches HL2, of cause it looks like shit though.

HL2 looks like some characters have a reasonable SINGLE shadow but everything else looks like standard lightmaps. It's nice see a 'modern engine' that looks no different from any other engine from more that two years ago.

The only remotely impressive things in any of those screenshots is the magnifing glass in pic 19, the water(as good has Farcry? maybe) and the level of detail in the charactors faces.

Your loss.

So you say. I really doubt the single player will be groundbreaking. It may be fun, but I'm sure it will be something we've seen before. And the multi-player? I really don't want to play CS:Source. Been there, done that. I find it incredibly sad that Valve spent all of this time on the game and the only MP the game will ship with is a rehashed version of CS.

To pirate this game. After the length of time and the debacle it has turned into I know I will be dissappointed. All the crap this game has, the "groundbreaking" technology in games is yesterdays news. Old and Busted if you will. This game has gone the way of the Pentium 3. I expect by its release (Now Somewhere between NOW and 2006) this will be a "Value Bin" game. So lets all build a bridge and get over it.

Have that same hand drawn look to them. I'm sure I'm not describing this correctly but they remind me almost of a comic book in a way.

Okay, so let me get this straight. The release date rumors have been started based on speculation by European retialers, not by Valve. Unlike last year, Valve is not commenting on the latest rumored date except to essentially say "when it's done."

And yet all you whiners are insinuating that this hype is all because of Valve?! Are you people nuts or so delusional that you think every little tidbit about Half Life 2 that comes out, whether originating from Valve or someone else, is somehow all Valve's fault?!

Sheesh people, get over it. The game was delayed for a year. So was Doom 3. And just about every other major game has suffered delays - whether there was a projected release date or not.

And all you morons who bought ATI cards because of the free HL2 coupons quit your whiny ass bitching too - Valve is still going to send you the game, and is being nice enough to allow you to upgrade to silver or gold versions. What more can you ask from Valve? They are in business to make money, not give away their game from free!

Man, I hope some of you whiners who are swearing they will NOT buy this game actually do keep your promise and do not buy this game.

And as for all the bitching about Steam - I downloaded and installed it for the first time last night. I don't know what everyone is complaining about. Small install, low overhead, quickly created an account, and I was downloading the HL2 preload at between 1.2 and 1.5 mbps last night. Whole process, from downloading the steam client to starting the preload took less than 5 minutes.

If I had listened to some of the whiners on these boards, I would not have tried it out for fear it would completely take over my system and make it run slower then molasses. I am glad the ignorant masses don't listen to you whiners - if they did they would not buy 99 percent of the PC games made!

Sorry to sound harsh, but I am getting tired of this Valve bashing. They blame Valve for all the hype, but ignore the fact the web site, such as BluesNews, play a major role in sometimes creating and almost always propagating all the hype.

Sorry for the rant, and sorry if this sounds harsh. I am NOT a Valve fanboi, and admit I have joined in on some of the jibing at Gabe's body fat content. But I am just getting sick and tired of all this Valve bashing - a LOT of it is undeserved. This is the last I will say on this.

I'm no longer buying Half-Life 2 on general principle. This is worse than hype for a summer movie or a new television series.

Your loss. Especially when the hype is pretty much fan hype, not marketing from the company.

Think about it - why is Valve preventing internet sites from doing early reviews? To stop the hype. If they gave out pre-release copies for websites the internet would be full of plot details, screenshots, movies, and fanboy hype withing 4 hours.

Right now they're suffering from kids like you whining that everyone is overhyping it too much, even with Valve responsible for very, very little.

Imaging if websites got ahold of it. Self-righteous jackasses would be swearing it off left and right. Not to mention that most gaming sites are kids, not professionals, and it would lead to lots of other kids feeling terribly left out.

I doubt pirating has much to do with it. Every game needs to worry about that, and it's easy enough for Valve to stop. They could watermark something to trace it, and the releases would probably be tied to a Steam account and unusable otherwise.

Youre kidding, right?
The textures look like some low res from 2 years ago. And then the low polycount of the maps and surroundings... Take a closer look on that first screenshot on Gamebiz. The only one that looks quite ok is the last one, but that one doesnt show much.
I am very dissapointed to say the least... Doom 3 or FarCry look FAR, FAR better.

I also hope Vampire doesnt get delayed because of this.

EDIT: I downloaded the rar file and have to admit some look really nice. Nothing spectacular, but much better than the ones for preview on Gamebiz. I like the one with the scientist in his lab the most. But the rest looks nowhere as good as FarCry or Doom3.

I have it on good authority that when Vivendi got the Release Cadidate, one of their Peeps accidently leaked it to one of HIS buddies. So.... we should be seeing another stolen code excuse that will add another year for the rewrite. ROFL

How do you 'accidentally leak', you mean 'illegally gave' and got fired.

The game is an executeable not code, if it was leaked the people who would hurt the most are VUG.

I'll believe it when I see it. The only time I was excited about this game is when it was supposed to be on my computer last September. Remember that?

On that note, we should celebrate the official anniversary of Half-life delays. I think September 30th or around there was the first release date. Yaa!!!! Party!!! Let's go for 2 years Valve.

On the one hand, I'm surprised they missed the 9/30 gold status yesterday...and considering that the pre-load status is now up to phase 5, I'm surprised that it's set for 11/26.

Then again, they're aiming for Christmas, so that's not surprising.

Looks like they took the extra year to improve the engine. The screenshots look much more clear and distinct than they did. The textures on the peoples faces it pretty darn good.

Now the only fly in the ointment is, in all the time they took to make it, did I grow out of my mod making urge. Been waiting years to make a mod with a new engine. All the good ones been delayed for the past 2 or 3 years.

They finally release Half Life and I find myself thinking more about my rocking chair than modding. Modding is hard work and takes brains. Now I want a beer, the rocker, and a remote control. Making models, texturing, coding, mapping. They all sound like punishments from hell now.

Likewise. In fact I've changed my mind. I'm no longer buying Half-Life 2 on general principle. This is worse than hype for a summer movie or a new television series.

"November 23rd is the new 'suspected' release date. Will Half-Life 2 make it, or will it once again be delayed? Find out this fall in the new down-to-earth hit comedy series, Living with Gordon."

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, "To hell with Half-Life 2".
