Out of the Blue

Today, of course, is the day the first Star Wars Trilogy comes out on DVD. As has been endlessly hashed out, these are not exactly the original versions of the original movies, but as the release has neared, I have gotten excited about all this, and less worried about such issues. A bit more worrisome are the audio issues noted on The Digital Bits mentioned in the forums here yesterday, but the latest response they've gotten from LucasArts indicates that the flopped rear surround channel dealie is supposedly intentional, so we'll have to see how that plays out. May the force be with us!

So let me get this straight. . . what you're all saying essentially is that the special edition VHS copies I bought five years ago for twenty bucks at Dimple Records (and barely ever watch so the quality is still excellent) are actually better than the sparkling new DVD's costing sevety bucks that people have been waiting on pins and needles for?

Even a bad dvd can look better than VHS...In this case, I'm betting the video quality is miles better than VHS.

Guess I'll find out this weekend...

What sounded funny - the reported reversed score in the rear channels or other stuff as well? If it was more than that, could it have been a screwed up audio setup, or something similar?

After tron talking about it, and Blue agreeing with him on his experience, I am now hoping they just had it setup horribly (this is BestBuy after all), becuase this was some pretty awful stuff.. So I guess I will get them now and see (I can always take them back).

not even close. they digitally remastered the DVD's, and upgraded the sound to 5.1 DD EX. the picture is immediately noticably superior to the VHS editions, and i mean it is a huge difference. the sound too is noticably vastly improved, and it's nice to finally hear these films in true 5.1 surround. some people complain about the tinkering lucas has done, but many of the fixes in the new set are a relief, such as fixing saber effects. he even somewhat "fixed" the cantia shoot-out scene, by making the shots near simultaneous... still not as cool as in the original, but not as lame as in the special editions either.

Great. Somehow I had convinced myself I wasn't going to buy this. After reading this....

Now I'll have another set of movies I watch once every two years at best.

tron, you should get your little ditty on their advertising!

also, i paid $42 for mine, not $70 as you claim. and in my book, $42 is well worth the price of three classic films, plus a disc full of extras including a brand new 2 hour documentary. most new DVD's sell for $20 for a single film.

<shrug> time will tell. Probably not enough of us score nuts to cater to.

well, i bought the set today and watched ANH just a few minutes ago... i'm something of an audiophile, but i didn't notice anything distracting, and couldn't tell the score was reversed in the rear channels. of course, i just sat back and enjoyed the film, i didn't make an effort to listen for the problems... fact is, if no one mentioned a problem, i would have never guessed one existed. the film looks and sounds soooo much better that i have ever experienced before. that said, i'll gladly mail my disc in for a replacement if they decide to issue one!

I still can't believe nobody discoved this until now. Bike thieves must have known about this for years.

From what I read, someone did discover it in the early 90s, but word never got around...

Yeah they posted that on Yahoo a while back. Way to tell the world Yahoo. You can't do that with the new locks though so at worst you're out 50 bucks after several years of having one of those bike locks. I still can't believe nobody discoved this until now. Bike thieves must have known about this for years.

Apologies if this got posted somewhere and I didn't notice, but do any of you use a Kryptonite lock with a round key? If so, you should definitely take a look at the video on this page (WMV):

http://www.engadget.com/entry/7796925370303347/

Seems as though you can bust into [at least some of] their cylinder style locks with nothing more than a Bic pen and a couple of seconds (literally like 3).

Kryptonite, for their part, is offering "free product upgrades for certain locks purchased since September 2002":

http://www.kryptonitelock.com/

For all I know (and that's not much more than those two links provide), this could easily apply to any cylinder style lock from any manufacturer. It could be that Kryptonite, being one of the biggest, just happened to be the one that got burned first..

Anyway, about a dozen of my Krypto-having friends have already shit their pants over this today with their bikes being locked up while they were at work, so I thought it was worth mentioning to you lot as well so as to avoid adding to that number if possible

Personally, I have one of these beasts from Abus (and they just paid for my grandmother's hip-replacement, so treat 'em nice [/jk]):

http://tinyurl.com/4seq4

The compromise for security is squarely in the wallet and weight departments, but you get a freakishly overbuilt lock (if there can be such a thing) in return.. If it were me doing the stealing, and I was faced with that thing, I'd say it would be much faster and less conspicuous to cut straight through my frame and steal my groupo, frankly.. Ideally (and apparently especially if there's a stationary store nearby) the bike next to mine is even easier still than that..

Still clench my teeth every time I have to lock up my baby tho..

They did do that LD exchange way back when ESB came out with missing footage. Since this issue is only reported on ANH, I could see an exchange (a la Back To The Future, which suffered from some kind of misframing or the DTS version of Jurassic Park that had no LFE)...

It's my understanding it's not just the score that's reversed - it's the entire back channels.

So if an X-Wing swoops past you on the left, it'll start on the front left speaker, and then transition to the rear right speaker (instead of the rear left speaker).

edit: I take the above back. Just re-read TDB comments, and they mention the score, not the SFX.

The thing is: If this WAS intentional, why didn't they do it for ALL the movies? To do one and not the others makes no sense, and blows Lucasfilms theory of "We MEANT to do that!" out of the water...

I hope we get a fix on this quick...

Though, it did not take long for the sound trouble to really bother me, it is VERY distracting when sounds come from the wrong direction.

read:"We had no idea that the sheep would actually call us out on something like this so we think you should all just get lives and stop bothering us"
Exactly.

I was at BestBuy today for other reasons, they had a nice big display of them right inside the door, so I grabbed one and went along my business. I get near the hi-def TVís and surround sound setup, and they have it playing, so I sit down and watch for a few minutes (in a ohh soo nice massaging chair thingie!). I was not watching it for flaws, just checking it out. Though, it did not take long for the sound trouble to really bother me, it is VERY distracting when sounds come from the wrong direction. If you do not have a 5.1 or better surround sound system, its fine for you, but I do, and love it. I put it back in hopes of a new version soonÖ..crap.

I think I will still wait a few months for a different version, as I have seen the movies before, and I am not really dieing to see Gorgery Porgys new changes.
