Rockclimber said "As for DOOM3, I've been playing id games forever and I think DOOM3 was just "ok". The graphics didn't really shock me because lots of other games came out before it with many of the same features. The gameplay is vanilla FPS.

Fact is, I barely made it half way through the game before I got bored. I've enjoyed it so far, but it hasn't been good enough to keep me interested for long periods of time. I though Riddick's game play was more fun.

And I say : If youve been playing id games forever and you didnt get a little shocked by the new engine there using for doom3? youre a liar.

Riddick? the console game ? no wonder no matter how good it is its a Fking console game this is the PC forum.

Shocked? and thats supposed to factor in to my liking doom3?
i liked it cause i didnt see anything else out at the time that I havent played to death already , I was board so i bought it played it and enjoyed it, as I do with most of the things i do.

Its no crime to enjoy what you do and as a gamer i do enjoy this proffesion , i dont whine cry and pull out hair nit picking about how a pixel is outta place, no no i enjoy playing games on the PC period, Ive played Mule, Archon, Pools of Radience, Eye of the beholder, Dungeon Master, all the great old one and Sundog.. and you know what?

I am a gamer no complaints about it just glad to support the industry so F off with all your childish whining ya here LOL.

Hmmm.... perhaps id (read J. Carmack) should focus on creating awesome rendering engines, and leave the rest (story, plot, puzzles, level design, characters, gameplay) to others (hire valve guys or vivendi, who cares?, raven, or the team that did tribes2.)

Downloaded the demo... and I'm glad I did not bother buying the game. The graphics are pretty and the attention to detail is great, but it's just a drunk Quake2 (linear levels, rehashed weapons, corridors up the wazoo) dolled up in a new prom dress and some lipstick and she's partying with Resident Evil (zombie takeover, evil corporation).
If id hasn't proven by now that they're kings of recycling their old material... this should do it...

p.s. ATTENTION GAME DEVELOPERS! ENOUGH FUCKING CRATES AND SEWERS ALREADY! IF YOUR LEVEL DESIGNER WAS A FORMER WAREHOUSE MANAGER/CROCODILE, FIRE HIS ASS!

Man, you guys are making me guilty for enjoying DOOM 3. Granted, I haven't been playing that many games this year (haven't touched Far Cry and Thief 3 yet), but I think the reason why I enjoyed DOOM 3 is because I wasn't able to play it till end of August. By then I've pretty much read everyone's impression of it (without the spoilers). With expectation much, much lowered, I got what I wanted.

I might do the same thing for HL2. After what happened to DX:IW, I swear to never let myself get carried away by hype ever again.

Oh well, I enjoyed DOOM 3, and that's what matters. Nothing I say will change your view, and nothing you say will change mine. Let's please move on.

Monster closets and ammo traps - Nostalgia, takes me back to the original Doom games ( this is a remake after all ). Yes sometimes it did take away from the immersion but generally I stay 'in the game' and fretted over the old style traps when I wasn't playing it.

Again, just because you can attach a fancy term to it, doesn't neccassarily make it a good idea. Had it been just ONE ammo trap or a small area with a bunch of monster closets, I could have gone "Haha, ammo-trap elevators! I remember those! That's great! :)" but that's not what happened.. Those concepts dominated most of the game, which really disrupted the immersion FOR NO GOOD REASON. Crap, they were even scary. Give us some stuff like the reflection scene in the Alpha.. THAT scared the bejesus out of me ("Hey cool, I can see twice reflection.. twice even... Wait, that second one is.. OH @!#$!$") 'Course the monsters in the alpha were a lot harder to put down

Do you think the flashlight would be better if it attached to every weapon?
No, that's impractical in the face of an easier idea; Stick the flashlight to the guys armour or helmet (Or just give him a Night Vision mode..) Have a shoulder mounted flashlight for your armour is an old staple of scifi.

And it might just be me, but I think trying to find a safe spot to hide before your flashlight runs out would be FAR more suspensful than "I have to run around with out a weapon to see.. Oh look a monster, better whip my gun out.. Hey, where'd he go?.. Oh well, I'll just fire blindly for awhile.."

wide open areas are only important for outdoor maps and even then only if you have jeeps/buggies etc ( which Q4 will have )

Good for Quake 4 and the Doom 3 engine.. I'm talking about the Doom 3 game though.

otherwise it's just a matter of taking longer to get to next objective. It doesn't matter if their are 20 different routes with a slightly different number of hostiles on each if you still haev to walk a mile to a specific door.

Or, you know, you can stick more objectives onto a larger map Plus a larger map allows for more non-linearity.. I don't know about anyone else, but I sure felt lead around by my nose in Doom 3.. That doesn't help the immersion that much either.

realistic water: since far cry this will be the norm. No reason not to have it(unless you're on a planet without it ). It's not exactly going to add aanything new to the 'game'. Water is water, it's reflections etc don't actually add gameplay, just looks cool.
THe same could be said for Per-Pixel Lighting The only difference is lightmap hacks can produce realistic enough results that developers can fit a bunch more stuff into the game instead of sacraficing a lot for the lighting system.

Sincerely,
Jeremy Dunn

Cheese,

Your post was so poorly written, that it actually caused me pain to read it.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.

realistic water: since far cry this will be the norm

The original AvP's water, while not reflective was definately very cool. It was polygonal and dynamic. So running around in puddles you could look down and see the water rippling away from you, hitting the walls and then rippling back. Damn that water was way ahead of it's time.

I've yet to see water in another game like that...even Farcry's doesn't stack up. Yes it looks pretty but that's about it.

... is it even remotely possible to beat sarge on mightmare node??

Did you use the Soul Cube on him? That takes a good bit of his health away right off. Although, I havn't tried it in nightmare mode yet.

Carmack is still the best at producing game engines.

I don't know.. the Unreal people have done some good stuff as well. Their UnrealEngine3 is looking very good so far.

No the soulcube wasn't 'changed' unfornately - my bad.

Unreal3 looks very good but until we actually see it in a released game it doesn't count.
Just remember Doom3 engine doesn't limit the number of ployies, it handle very large texture sizes, self shadowing can be turned on and you can create and add any shaders you like as new matrials so realistic water and coloured lightrays should all be possible with the current Doom3 engine. It's just a question of which gfx cards can keep the frame rate high enough to be playable.

martian buddy lockers - agreed, bad idea. If they added a functional web browser to some of the terminals in the game that would have been cool.

That's still no reason to produce such an obtuse gameplay "gem" like the flashlight (And before you get started on "standard issue" this and "duct tape" that; just because you have a reason to explain it away DOES NOT suddenly turn a concept that isn't fun into one that is..)

Do you think the flashlight would be better if it attached to every weapon? or every weapon had a flashlight built into it? (soulcube??)
Should your marine do a little juggerling act at every weapon change to reattached/swap hands?
Do you think dark areas or unlite corners would be scary and make you walk around carefully, if everywhere you looked was lite up by your 'always' on touch and if there was something there you just click the mouse button and boom it's gone, run to next room.
Maybe you think they shouldn't have bothered with all those dark areas so you don't need a touch. Of couse then you don't really need realtime lighting so you can go back to precompiled lightmaps like HL & HL2 and everyother game.
A flashlight only works if it doesn't just produce light but also produces new shadows for everything it hits.

Sure maybe a flashlight with a battery that runs down would cool, but it just wouldn't work for some areas where there was no lighting at all. That wouldn't be fun at all.
