BF Vietnam Updates

The Battlefield Vietnam Website (thanks Frans) has a new update about DICE's military shooter that describes a new version 2.0 of the ByteSwarm LiveUpdate client that can detect and download the latest version of the BF Vietnam client and server. The update also goes into further detail about plans for the upcoming version 1.2 patch, including the revelation of a new spectator mode that's in the works:

At any time during a play, a user can jump into spectator mode by clicking the Spectator button on the Spawn Menu. The player can then choose to roam around in free cam, follow any player’s progress from follow-cam or watch the action from pre-set spawn point cameras. Jumping back to a team is then as easy as clicking the team’s flag on the Spawn Menu. We hope that this feature will be of great use in both casual play and clan matches.

It also says spawn menu, which could mean you can't do it until you're dead.

Point of Existence mod looks decent, but It's way too early for me to get into it. Well, that and I prefer mods to be playable offline as well as online. Perhaps next beta. :p

Some servers have a fixed or a free-roaming death cam already. That's been a server-side option since the game shipped. I don't think the new spectator mode will offer any other benefits as far as spying goes. And like Riley said, maybe you will lose all your points upon entering spec mode. I think it's cool that they're adding it, actually. It could be fun to watch some battles take place from a great vantage point.

wait wait wait, this insta-spectator mode sounds really dangerous... so I'm playing and someone is kicking my ass, I'm about to die and then I decide to go into spectator mode to "escape" death. Then when things calm down I can spawn back into play?
I take it you have never played Quake 3 where this type of spectating is the norm. When you become a spectator, you lose all of your points, inventory, etc., and I assume it will be true in BFV as well.

I agree baron, this 'feature' has idiocy written all over it. Seems like it may also be used for other unfair play, such as spying prior to spawning.

ASE shows that there are 899 DC servers and 854 stock game servers for bf42 at this moment. bf:v has 1400 servers overall.

Many of the clans I interact with are moving to it since desert combat is effectively dead.

huh? DC still has more servers than BF42 and BFV combined.

I've playing PoE since it came out but until they get some decent maps for it its not going to be as good as DC is (IMHO that is). Note to level designers: just because the engine supports a large amount of vegetation/trees doesnt mean you have to populate almost every map with them (and please lose the "Savanah Mist" level).

But in vanilla BFV I only play "Operation Flaming Dart", or I play WWII mod. I am also waiting for more WWII maps. I don't think that there will be any 'official' WWII european theater maps because the foliage is different, which makes me sad because there are some rockin' maps that need to be redone with BFV tech. Maybe some truely ambitious and artistic souls will form up a team to tackle that. It would seriously rock my pants.

The Point of Existence mod http://www.pointofexistence.com/ is rather impressive and is the equivalent of desert combat for the bfv engine. Many of the clans I interact with are moving to it since desert combat is effectively dead.

I only play the WW2 mod at the moment..

Thinking that when the new patch comes out I'm gonna play some Vietnam again but I'm also hoping they're gonna release more WW2 maps...
