UT2004 Eden Eclipse

Eden Eclipse.com now offers downloads of demo 1 of the Eden Eclipse modification for Unreal Tournament 2004, which has hopes of becoming a full-fledged commercial project. Here's the deal: "Eden Eclipse is a science-fiction first person 3D action game set in the distant future. You take on the persona of a brave female soldier named Lt. Amber Daniels."

So did no one ever play Thief? Come on, Doom 3 wasn't that dark.

My gripe with Doom3 (and I still love it) was there weren't many shadows. You'd have a light shining down in a room, and in the corner (say, behind a cabinet) it'd be pitch black (I think the term I'm looking for is "soft shadows" but I'm not sure).

Umm, you in the right topic, Duc?

So did no one ever play Thief? Come on, Doom 3 wasn't that dark.

It was pretty dark. There wasn't a flashlight in Thief, but it didn't seem to need one in most places. I remember I could make out what things were in the dark better in Thief than in D3. Maybe I just turned up the brightness/gamma more in Thief..

Also, there wasn't the problem of someone jumping out of the darkness and scaring you as in D3. I didn't like how some places were nicely lit, then once you got into the room, it would get dark and guys would come.. and that laugh.

10 minutes, are they fucking joking ? Quick, everyone who doesn't have a walmart within 10 minutes drive needs a closer one...

looks nice, but it's suffering from Doom 3 syndrome; put some more lights in!

Hmm another "you play as a female character" game. That`s different. ;p lol Not.

Well... we have two choices here, male or female. There's a plethora of games on either side. Would you, um, rather you played as a french poodle?

For the rest, thanks for any helpful comments or critiques. It helps us figure out what we need to work on for our next release. This was only our first public release of Eden Eclipse. We know it's unpolished and needs a good ammount of work in a lot of areas. It should be looked at as a early stage release... and if you do that, we think you'll agree that we're headed in the right direction and have a great start here.

doom3 was supposed to be dark dumbass

And thus the system of being dark. Dumbass. He was saying it needed more lights (and it does), not that it was broken because it didn't have lights, idiot.

Only three levels, save game system is disabled but you can just load any of the three levels and play them (you'll have to start over with only knife, pistol and grenades) if you do though, locked up on me so I had to re-try the hanger level that way. It wasn't Doom3 dark, but I wouldn't want to play it in a well lit room either. No cinimatics but there's and end of game teaser graphic. Weapons need an overhaul (more umph and variety) AI is pretty basic, the spiders wern't too bad but the mosquitoes were too slow and the zombie guys too stiff and stand offish, they just zap you from a distance with their laser beam (which is suppose to be firing from their hand but looked like it was coming from their crotch ) The gameplay was alright other than that, cool graphics and nice looking models, liked the vending machine idea for supplies, sort of like system shock 2 in that way.

5. Beta? Sep 12, 2004, 16:34 Bucky

Played through for a bit, and I will say the game has some promise. That being said, in it's current form it still needs a lot of work. There aren't nearly enough sound cues (from doors opening, monsters, and even weapon sounds are very weak), enemy animation is nearly non-existant (spiders 'hover' across the floor), and there are quite a few other issues like player model collisions (I kept 'bouncing' off of things). All in all it feels like a late alpha/early beta, and it's hard to recommend a download of that size.

The mod is OK for the very first demo release. It has problems, though. Because I'm lazy I'll copy and paste most of what I already posted at BeyondUnreal:

The level design and atmosphere is top notch. Very much like Aliens, or the first couple levels of AvP2. I like how you can only carry so many weapons at one time. And the weaker ones aren't totally useless as the bigger stuff becomes available. Unfortunately they all sound kinda weak. There's no doubt it's all being taken care of, especially since this is an early release.

I have mixed feelings on enemy design. The spiders are cool. Everybody hates big spiders. But those walking humanoid Pumpkinhead type guys with laser hands are a little...strange. Maybe if they hid in the dark and made hissing noises and stuff they'd work better.
AI needs work. The spiders are good. Although if you're in a separate room or a foot off the ground they sometimes don't attack. Or move, for that matter.
Pumpkinhead with lasers acts like a zombie most of the time. A major problem I had was hit detection with bullet weapons. If they get close the crosshair will not go red, indicating a clear shot, almost every time. The swarm of wasps are a pain in the ass, epecially since you can hardly see them.

The weapon locker dealies are cool, where you can buy ammo and equipment.

The mod needs a welding torch to seal and open doors. Edin Eclipse is very close to a first person Alien Swarm.

This MSU has me in Mod overload, so many cool mods to check out - the only problem is the multiplayer ones get spread so thin (player and server wise) because of it.

Downloading now. I figure it can't hurt to give it a shot--I'll post back with impressions once I've played through it.
