I played base Tribes for over two years and base T2 for over a year (I pubbed in T2 classic for a while after that), competitively. I don't recall ever seeing anyone use the Sensor Jammer =0
Probaly because during the closed beta, they weaned themselves to the extreme left and right. The extreme left player: The newbie Tribes or console player and the Extreme right player: The lpb "Im on a lan and want to cap out the map" player. You know the folks that get angry when you put vehicles in the game.
Not sure if that spectrum is entirely accurate. The main conflict was between T1 vets and T2 vets/nubs. T1 vets longed for the speed and visceral feel of T1. T2 vets/nubs wanted to have overpowered vehicles, turrets, etc. I've played both games extensively and can honestly say that I enjoy both. However, I feel that vehicles should have never been the focus of T2. All the other game aspects (physics, capping, weapons, etc) suffered because of this focus. The Missile Launcher was created as the only effective counter to vehicles. This resulted in almost everyone being forced to carry Flares. In order to force people to use vehicles, physics and speed were nerfed, placing a cap on maximum speed and severely affecting the plausibility of HO. Capping became dumbed down. Instead of discovering and mastering ski routes, cappers simply hopped into a Shrike and used that to gain momentum. If they were lucky, they could hop right back into the Shrike and escape with a 1% chance of getting shot down. Simply put, vehicles added nothing to the game besides annoyance. The same can be said with T:V.
Before you go off calling me a T1 elitist, let me remind you that, unlike most T1 vets, I actually played T2 for more than a week. In addition, I enjoyed it (for the most part). However, any Tribes player who has played both T1 and T2 extensively should know that T1 is clearly the superior game.
Not one map is designed to make capping difficult. Any noob can cap. No auto defenses, flags sitting out there like a hooker selling her wares. This was the main reason I stopped playing Tribes2.
Uh, T2 was entirely focused on defense. Aside from the fact that the turrets were overpowered, many of the maps were not conducive to skiing. In T2 Classic, the return of mine-discing makes it even harder to cap. You say that the flags just sit out there waiting to be capped... have you ever played Quagmire? Good luck getting a noob to cap on that one.
