This press release
(thanks Frans) announces that DOOM 3 is selling like hotcakes: "The game debuted
as the #1 best-selling PC game in the U.S. for the week ending August 7,
according to NPD Techworld. Additionally, DOOM 3 was the #1 best-selling game
overall in the U.K. for the weeks ending August 14 and August 21, according to
the U.K. Chart Track and the #1 best-selling PC game in Australia, for the weeks
ending August 8 and 15, according to GfK Inform Database. For the week ending
August 15, DOOM 3 also was the #1 best-selling PC game in France, according to
GfK; the #1 game in Germany, according to Media Control; and the #1 game in
Sweden, Denmark and Norway, according to Manual Sweden, Manual Denmark and
Manual Norway."

Doom3 is a beautiful engine wrapped around a tired shooter
Hey, that's your opinion. Mine is that I LIKE "tired" shooters, and this game was (correction, is, as I have not finished yet) a lot of fun for me as well as lots of others, apparently including the majority of reviewers.
Doom 3 has a story (apparently too thin by your standards, but it's there), it's got beautiful graphics (both the levels and creatures), it has fun gameplay, and the sound effects are really well done. What else do you want?
Do you want lots of enemies? Play Serious Sam - this isn't that game.
Do you want huge environments? Play Far Cry - this isn't that game.
Do you want challenging puzzles? Play Myst or Chess Master - this isn't that game.
Do you want great multiplay? Play Q3A or UT2k4 - this isn't that game.
IT IS WHAT id PROMISED IT WOULD BE. If you bought it expecting something else, it's your own damned fault.
