TRIBES: Vengeance Open Beta Soon?

A post to the Vivendi Universal Games Forums (thanks GameGossip) has word on plans for open beta testing for TRIBES: Vengeance. The update stresses that there is no official release date, but they describe tentative plans to begin an open multiplayer test as early as this month:
It is expected sometime this month, August, but that is subject to change if there are more bugs or other items that need fixing before it is released for testing.

Yesterday (well, 2:00 this morning) KP released the changes for 05 beta, which is open beta. So its safe to assume we'll be seeing it shortly. Can't wait to play with everyone!

We had a heap more maps before the beta got released at tws, they removed most when they released 03.

I'm so looking forward to playing this. I enjoyed Tribes 1 and 2 a ton. I'm actually looking more forward to this release than any other game this year... simply because I believe the multiplayer will be a blast.

This was done because the maps, as they were originally built, were too easy to defend. Choke points combined with overpowered turrets and overpowered vehicles made games end more with stalemates and standoffs than capouts.

T1 was more balanced in general, but biased to offense so the games were more fluid and fun. T:V seems to about the same. The biggest problem I've seen is that some of the maps are small enough that players can reach flag-to-flag without even hitting the ground, which does make defense difficult. This is being worked on, the small maps are being enlarged.

T:V also splits the scoring up, so you get a better of idea of what players are doing and how well they're doing it. There are Offense points, Defense points, and Style points. Offense and defense points are pretty self-explanatory, but style points are awarded for things like mid-air kills with the disc. This means that good dedicated defenders should be adequately compensated on the scoreboard for playing their position, as will good offensive players.

Agreed on T2 - somehow, T1 just had more fun in it, it seemed. The T2 beta/meta was cool though back when the community features worked.

In other news, a beta of Vengeance makes me happy in the pants.

Thing I disliked about Tribes 2, Is how they pandered to the Flag whores, changing maps to over expose the flag, obscenely poor/illogical flag placements. Made defending that much more distasteful, more times than not I was a lone defender. Whacking skil-less flag whores and being called a cheater/camper because my kill/death ratio was too high. (Nope called play for team score, and to hell with my score; ie non glory seeking.)

I hope there's incentive to defend, and not just a big queue to cap the flag. I know the kiddies like to twitch. But there's nothing like discing a chaod that just humped across the map.

One of the funniest things to see on an old T2 public server, was flag cappers fighting over the flag. (Now that's teamwork )

Other ugly habits that irritate:
- Did I mention the flag whores.
- Vehicle whores
- Last but not least, hey look they other team is winning, time to switch teams,

Why does everyone complain about paying for Fileplanet? I'm not paying them a cent and I got into the Dawn of War beta and got a key from fileplanet. Did I miss something or have they ceased allowing free registration and has my account somehow been grandfathered in?

Anyway, I'm not complaing: Fileplanet gets a fake email addy from me, and I get to play the goodness that is DoW for free for a bit (just had one showstopper crash...the rest is awesome not-entirely-rts goodness).

Does this make sense to anyone else?

No.

Because if you've played UT and watched the T:V videos, you'd see that they are totally different. And I don't know which videos you've seen, but the ones I've seen of T:V show people skiing all over the place, with a lot of the action taking place in the air. Unless you're in a flying vehicle, you're NOT in the air in UT.

Get the demo. Play the demo. THEN make a decision. Like what has been said about Doom3, static screenshots and grainy videos do not do this game justice.

Anyone know if T:V has the Comlink system? The base network where you access the map, turrets, cameras, sensors, give orders and all that?

Why are you people going to PAY to beta test a game? Maybe I'm old fashioned but I'm used to being compensated for beta testing. Seriously... I can understand wanting to play the game as soon as possible but paying for a beta just boggles my mind.

What I meant about dumbing down, is the lower player limit, less deployables, less vehicles (goofy looking at that), more static bases.

Most of those are good things. Really, all good competitive matches are 16-man or 20-man anyway. Forces each player to be good at their roles. Less deployables is pretty good, though the lack of portable inv stations has me worried. I also don't like the conversion of mines into a deployable. Seems like that will make them useless. Less vehicles is definitely a good thing, as they took the main focus in T2 and really dragged the game down. As for static bases, no clue what you're talking about. All the bases in all the Tribes games have been static.

I have yet to hear any of the beta testers say it is slower then T2. Almost everybody who has played the game love it.

It's definitely a lot faster than T2, prolly faster than T1 as well. And it looks and plays NOTHING like UT2k*....

I've had more fun playing T:V in the last month than I've had playing any game in a long, long time. I can see it becoming a big hit.

I have seen in the latest vids that really pizzes me off, is the goofy colored light trails that I guess are supposed to be vapour trails when dudes are jetpacking.

Yeah, they look pretty gay... but honestly... there is usually so much action going on, you don't have time to notice shit like that.

every huge game community whines. That's just the sign of a great game, IMO. If you don't want to see the whining, don't go to the forums. Pretty damn simple.
