TRIBES: Vengeance Open Beta Soon?

A post to the Vivendi Universal Games Forums (thanks GameGossip) has word on plans for open beta testing for TRIBES: Vengeance. The update stresses that there is no official release date, but they describe tentative plans to begin an open multiplayer test as early as this month:

It is expected sometime this month, August, but that is subject to change if there are more bugs or other items that need fixing before it is released for testing.

Faster than T1, from what I've read. I think even the preview from today (this morning maybe?) had a blurb about it being that much speedier. It'd be real hard not to be faster than T2.

I just watched a few ign videos from july. To me it seems as if it is as slow as T2, if not slower. Maybe it just seemed that way because its just a video or the player was extremely bad or both. *shrug*

oh - and Tribes 1 was never a "phenomena" it was more like a sleeper hit, a cult classic of sorts... it wasnt so much the hugeness of the fanbase but the longevity/passion it had

i think thats because tribes is a specialist online game - its almost like a combination of sports action and FPS action.. in fact I think Tribes 1 was the first game to have an official CTF mode

its a highly skill based game - you need to be willing to learn how to shoot someone out of the air with the spinfusor (blue discs) or figure out how to ski across the entire map in less than a minute...

in fact T:V is going to up the ante even more with the grappler (which brings back fond, very fond memories of the old Q2 ctf games) and also the buckler - which is a shield that can be thrown and then directed around in the air after it leaves your hand, returning to you like a boomerang... it might sound weird - but check out this movie of it in action..... and get ready to drool

In response to Morgan..my opinion is just from the videos. Maybe the UT "feel" is absent. But if I never had played Tribes before I would assume that this was the new UT2k5 just going off of the screenshots and videos. Does this make sense to anyone else?

I'll remain skeptical til I actually get my hands on the game.

useless content doesn't get spread around... i would assume if there isn't any single-player content that you are able to load a local game and run around.

If these are the closed beta files, then they are useless unless you have a cd-key.

You know that it's the Tribes community when the whining about changes starts before the public testing.

every huge game community whines. That's just the sign of a great game, IMO. If you don't want to see the whining, don't go to the forums. Pretty damn simple.

It plays nothing like UT, it just looks the same because it is the same engine, every part of the game besides the graphics(even a lot of the graphics) is totally different code than UT2k4.

http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=310756

There is a bunch of movies in that thread of some gameplay, but I think most are from the 03 build, the latest build we have is 04 and it plays way better.

It seems like this is one of the exceedingly rare dev team that's really listened to a wide swath of the audience and testers.
It's not just that they are listening, it's that they have to listen. The original Tribes was a fluke, it would have never reached the kind of popularity it did without the physics bug that created skiing, and it existed in a very narrow space where if it were even only moderately different than what it was, it also probably would have never taken off. T2 is a good example of this, as the core concepts were implemented, but done so in a way that the game wasn't really very fun.

The devs need to listen to the community, even if there are a lot of bad ideas because nobody knows how to really make Tribes again; it's not like the traditional MP FPS where there are rules etched out over a decade and a hundred games - the jetpack and skiing throw all those paradigms out the window. The Tribes concept is very hard to understand, and unless a game distills just the right essence of it, it not only will be looked upon unfavorably by the core community, but by the wider audience as well. Tribes is like Life cereal, Mikey liking it is the key to getting everyone else to like it too.

I'm curious about the "seems to play similarly" comment. Is that from playing the closed beta, or just appearances? I'm wondering if the comparison would still be there if you didn't know it was the UT2k4 engine... I see the family resemblance too, but I don't think being born from UT2k4's engine makes it too simliar. (Though only the open beta will tell. :))

I guess my biggest gripe is that it just looks alittle too much like UT2k3/4 and seems to play similarly.

This is my concern as well. I've already got UT2k4 and only play it for the mods, never the original game, I just dont like the style.

I bought Tribes 2 the day it came out and hated it, returned it a couple days later. I've been told it has improved since the original release, but I never got around to trying it again even when I downloaded it for free from Fileplanet.

faster, tighter, more mobile, etc.
faster than T2 or faster than T1?
I sure hope faster than T1, because T2 was ugly slow gameplay.

Faster than T1, from what I've read. I think even the preview from today (this morning maybe?) had a blurb about it being that much speedier. It'd be real hard not to be faster than T2.

And dont worry about the game being 'dumbed down". theres more tribes 'vets" with their "suggestions" (read; demands) going into the game than you could possibly count

Yeah, that's the impression I've gotten as well. It seems like this is one of the exceedingly rare dev team that's really listened to a wide swath of the audience and testers.

how so? its not slick like past Tribes designs because, as you stated, it takes place 400 yeras prior to the first two games. Given that, I think they've done a dam fine job of re-imagining the look of a Starsiege title. Like Space Captain I do miss the earlier look that had smoke and flame billowing out of their jet packs though.

And dont worry about the game being 'dumbed down". theres more tribes 'vets" with their "suggestions" (read; demands) going into the game than you could possibly count.

Alot of the concept art and design of turrets, vehicles , body armor etc are pretty uninspired generic looking stuff It just doesn't fit with the Tribes universe. What I meant about dumbing down, is the lower player limit, less deployables, less vehicles (goofy looking at that), more static bases. I know it takes place much earlier in the Starsiege timeline than the first Tribes but even in Tribes lore the earlier periods were described as being gritty barbaric clan wars. This looks more like Tron with jetpacks, minus the flouresence.
