A game is done, "when its done". A release date is never a promise or guarantee, if the game's not finished, it ain't finished. I'm sure Valve would have loved to roll out the title a year ago, but they underestimated the speed of their progress. No Big Deal. All this misled/betrayal nonsense is 3 year old reactionary stuff.
As for the source/id engines, well, I sure think Valve has nicer outdoor capabilities, although not as nice as Far Cry, and I'm certain the have good indoor settings, although not as nice as Doom 3. Having sampled the leaked HL2 beta, its clear that Source is an updated HL engine. It's nice, and incorporates a lot of current DX9 specs, but it frankly is not that jaw dropping up close and personal. I'm excited about HL2, and expect I'll have a blast, in fact, I'll likely pre-order at my local gamestop in the next couple of weeks, but I don't think we'll be ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the Source engine much.
