all the initial interviews said "we're not talking about multiplayer yet" then after that that video that showed it off
This was all just before E3 in May. I'm refering to last year, they had no multiplayer plans, not even basic deathmatch. They never talked about multiplayer until E3 this year. Only Valve truly knows, but I have a feeling they were seriously considering releasing Half Life 2 as single player only and launching Multiplayer add-ons thru Steam or other stand alone products.
I think the prospect of CounterStrike Source in the box really only came after they did their successfull tests of easilly converting old products to the Source engine. One of the recent interviews I read said they wanted to see how difficult it was going to be for mod authors to convert their existing products, so they thought they'd try it with Half Life 1 and see what happens. They were very successfull and this is how the idea for conversions of all existing HL product started and they could relatively easilly convert CS:Source for MP out of the HL2 box.
Despite their problems last year I think Valve are doing a bang up job and are going way beyond typical standards when it comes to supporting their product for the public.
ie: Why didn't id Software include Doom and Doom 2 on the discs for Doom 3 as a gift for fans that might not still have the originals or never had it? Instead they sell the original unupdated Doom and Doom 2 a few weeks before Doom 3 . Not saying what they did was wrong, its in their every right to repackage the old games, but they didn't even update it...but this is the difference between Valve, Epic and id software imo. id software started the mod support way back when...but Valve and Epic have taken it to whole new levels while id is still in the same place they always were.
