My that's disturbingly close to the release of Carmack's other big baby. Weird scenarios of trying to conceive to coincide with Doom 3 release date...

No, I'm sure it's just a coicidence.

I can see it now. 20 years from now young Ryan Carmack follows his fathers footsteps and becomes the next greatest game engine programmer in history.

Sounds like Baby 1.0 was released right on schedule ("when it's done.")

Yes I've seen many overly favourable comparisons to the PC... This is bad journalism, hyping a product when it's clear that it just doesn't look as good.

In previews it's the unwritten word that you cannot criticise a game, and in this instance, as everyone wants to know 'is it as good as the pc version?' they cannot write anything negative and so come out with 'year it looks as good' nonesense.

The truth is that except for a lower resolution there really isn't any major visual differences between the Xbox port of Doom 3 and the recently released PC version

I'm not sure if they're fanboys, if trying to be nice, or if they've just got honest differences of opinion with me, but I was at QuakeCon, I played and watched DOOM 3 on the Xbox, ant it's a lot different than the PC version. Lower poly models, lower framerate than a high end PC, poorer shadows, etc. I have a bottom-rung PC (GF3 Ti200) and it looks better on my system than it did on the Xbox (though granted, the Xbox version has a much steadier framerate than my system).

Now this isn't to say that DOOM 3 on the Xbox is bad - they've actually done a pretty good job. But to say that there's no major differences when people are playing it on high end systems in the same room is just mistaken.

he also made it clear that the company doesn't want to spend another four years on their next title. Carmack estimates that he'll have the game engine renderer done in less than a year. He also estimated that the art team will be able to start creating media for the new engine within the next month. Things are moving fast!
Mmm... large grain of salt, though I hope he's right.

Congrats to him re the baby, of course.

you code multi-million dollar game franchises, revolutionize the game industry, create an annual international conference for your games AND manage to plan the delivery of your first baby on the same day!
