Carmack on DOOM 3 & Q3A OpenSource

This Slashdot post from John Carmack (thanks shul and Frans) offers his reflections on the release of DOOM 3, as he proudly says: "I think it is the best game we have ever made, and it exceeded all of my expectations." A subsequent reply from the id Software lead programmer on the subject of the OpenSource release of Quake III Arena, states: "By the end of the year. There are still a lot of higher priority things, but it is coming soon. Hopefully punkbuster will keep the source release from having any negative impact on the player community." Here's a bit more from the first post on id's near-future roadmap:

Amidst all the various Doom ports and expansions, we are starting up on our next game. It will have a new rendering engine, which will be keeping me busy for a while, but the only other thing we are saying for now is that it won't be a sequel to any of our previous work. We have a really solid team that did a lot of maturing through Doom's development, so I have high hopes that it won't be another four year odyssey.

Will quake 3 be the last Open source release, now that Creative labs has some patents in doom3.
First, Quake 3 hasn't been GPL'd yet. Second, Doom 3 code could always be released with the patented code removed or released under a license which is compatible with Creative Labs' patent.

The graphics engine is groundbreaking.

Yes it is.

er it has just been released! That makes it new
Your complaints should be against the media for showing again & again previews, exclusives blah blah, thats whats spoilt the wow.

You try & find other games with such a complete approach to lighting! Sure some others half attempted it with ok results. So i'm not sure you've looked at the games graphics properly.
The only tech demo that i've seen that beats it is http://graphics.cs.uni-sb.de/~sidapohl/egoshooter/ ironic eh!

Quazz: well,I have to disagree with that. It's not the same technology at all. Like I said, if you follow a feature list, yeah, the Crytek engine looks the same on paper. But the feel is vastly inferior. I own Farcry and played it when it came out (demo as well) and granted, I was impressed by the outdoor stuff, especially the water, but I never felt the features, especially indoor environs, were put together well enough that they meant anything larger than the game itself, especially when they could barely run acceptably in my supposedly near-top of the range system for the time (P4 3Ghz 9800Pro 2GB RAM).

But yeah, I see where your point comes from, I just can't agree with it based on the quality and level of the execution.

Actually no. You would end up having two factions - one for Doom 3 (democrats) and one for [add you favorite FPS here] (republicans)

It "stole Doom 3's technological thunder" by including the same technology months before. Thus removing a large part of DOOM3's wow factor. DOOM3 may come in a more polished package (some could say that it's way easier to polish the levels when you only have one that you copy&paste, but that would just be mean), but it's nothing new technologically.

"They're both equally as shallow, but FarCry stole Doom 3's technological thunder by coming out first."

Aside from the fact that I feel like 80% of you people are blind because you can't tell the sheer superiority of Doom 3's overall art direction and visual design over FarCry's crappy cheapo visuals, I find the above paragraph pretty funny. You make it sound like FarCry is equal to Doom3 in engine quality. It may support the same feature list, but the quality and speed at which Doom3 implements it is at a clearly superior level. I have yet to see any glitches in Doom3 when firing through tight openings, weird shadows, bad intersections, bad lightning, missed physics, mangled audio, anything like that, but more importantly, this game looks beatiful at high quality, all features on at a very decent framerate averaging around 45 fps at 1024x768. On the same computer, FarCry starts out with ok framerates by lowering the quality to "shitty", then goes to hell when entering the ship (and that's with most features turned off) and by the time I leave the ship and approach the bay it's just completely unplayable because of the horrible framerate, or the horrible IQ I have to set it to so it won't run like a slide show.
This is leaving aside even more subjective things such as how "solid" Doom3 feels over FarCry in terms of your presence in the game world. I am not knocking FarCry per se, I think it's a pretty decent game, but come on.. "stole Doom 3's technological thunder"? not by a long shot.

It is funny how the message board here has really given trolls , haters, and naysayers (not just for Doom 3) a voice. The funniest is the comments that people make and then follow-up with "well at least it isn't as cool as X from what I have heard". Again, taking sides in something they have no clue about.

Unfortunatley, the internet and message boards have given every 12 year old and moron a voice. (Not implying 12 year olds are morons, just younger and not as experienced as older folk - though process of the youth is not as complete)

Now if everyone that had such passion for these such things that lay herein, would be so passionate about laws, policies, politics, and foreign policy. We would most likely all enjoy our country a little more (not just us Americans, but our friends across our borders and Oceans).

Just my .02 to hit the fact home that only around 5% of the posts lately around the Doom release are relevant. I have fixed performance issues from some posts and want to thank you who have spoke of your issues.

Otherwise, the rest is garbage and I am surprised that comments that are degrading and have nothing to do with anything, haven't been deleted or edited. I am aware that Blue mostly leaves things the way they are, but sometimes it is tiresome to read moronic waxing of nothing when you are trying to get at the core of the conversation.

Where do I find that option?

Check DoomConfig.cfg in the Doom3/base directory.

HIGHLY recommend that you double check that :
com_videoRam

is set to the ammount of ram present on your GFX card, and force it to such in your autoexec.cfg

Yakumo,

Where do I find that option? I also don't seem to have an autoexec.cfg, do you just make one yourself? I'm not as skilled in id engines as everyone else appears to be.

Thanks!

I meant more visually. Perhaps in gameplay also but not that much.

Visually you go from outdoors with lush green forests, to crystal clear blue water, to the inside of a rusted ship, into old WW2 bunkers which have been retrofitted with techno elements, to ancient ruins, to Doom 3 like indoors in the "cooler" level right up to a volcano.

Gameplay it's nothing revolutionary but still seems to have more variety than what I heard Doom has. Hang gliders, jeeps and boats are at least something. Mind you

Doom the original will always have a place in my heart. Wolfenstien was ok but Doom had the demons.

I will never be able to have that original feeling back. I won't be able to enjoy that FPS newness that was there for me.

That being said, I for one thought they were making a remake of Doom. Which in my mind they did, and surpassed what I was expecting from it.

What was Doom but a run around grab ammo, health, armor, power-ups, and shoot deamons game. id has recreated this perfectly in my mind.

I love it when people talk about the weapons in games sounding like crap. Of course they are going to sound unrealistic. Have a friend stand next to you and fire a shotgun when your playing the game. Im sure that will sound realistic, but then again how many times could that be done before you're deaf. So lets not bring up sound realism again - its just not realistic to have realistic sounds.

Innovative gaming. Well innovative gaming hasn't happened since the first game of any genre has been developed in my opinion. So you can add new weapons, vehicles, new in game puzzles. Its still the same here is your gun here is your enemy no matter how you dress it up. The only way to overcome this is to remove scripting. Have too many choices, probably making to large of a game. For example, don't you hate it when a door is locked for no reason, or that explosion just happened to block your path back. Although I think most would find this type of gaming to difficult. Lets face it, most people want to be led by the hand.

Difficulty settings. If you can't play the game on the hardest setting ootb return it. Personally I say ship the game with two settings HAF and HTF (hard as f$%k, harder than f#$k). Don't waste your own time dumbing down the game only to know everything about it when you want a challenge.

Personally I am enjoying the game. I don't have alot of time to dedicate to it consecutively. So maybe thats why I am enjoying it. I sit down and play for an hour or two then I need to handle some work. So I don't feel any repetitiveness.

Who knows ... I could be wrong.

I can't understand why anyone would criticize the game for not being a different style. I hate tactical shooters, but you'd never find complaining about how crappy they are because they play like... tactical shooters. I know that some people enjoy that style of game, and it would be foolish of me to complain about them.

Yet some people come here and are screaming that Doom 3 sucks because it isn't their prefered type of game. Well guess what, id software delivered exactly what they said they would: an extremely immersive, visually stunning, action first person shooter with high production values. And they did an excellent job at it. I haven't had this much fun with a game in a very long time.

And before someone accuses me of being and id fan boy, let me just say that nothing could be further from the truth. I've never truly enjoyed any of their games before. I thought Duke was better then Quake, Unreal tournament better then Quake 3, and my favorite fps of all times are System Shock 2, Thief 2, and Halflife. Doom 3 may soon join that list.

Yeah well, somebody not liking a game and then turning up on a messageboard with such arguments DOES make me a "fucker that cant accept the fact that people have their own damn opinions about things ".
