but now that my 6800GT video card is finally coming (long story) indulge us...
I'm going to restart the game after I install my new card i restarted after alpha labs 4, just for the heck of it, and to find more "secrets". it has been well worth it, as i'm having just as much fun, and findings tons more secret areas, which helps keep the game fresh...

also adds more "fear" to the game. You see a big friggin dark room, and you think "Ok, there's gotta be SOMETHING in there, but what should I do. Do I use the flashlight and lose a second or 2 of reflex time, or try to find their outlines in the dark? Ok, let's go with the flashlight."
You carefully walk through there, turning around and looking everywhere through your little tunnel of light. Then BAM, there's an Imp crouching on the ground. In pure terror, you quickly try to bring your shotgun back up quick enough to fire a shot before he tears your friggin head off.
Personally, I thought it was a great "device," for lack of a better word. Throughout the whole game, you're trying to balance the time you have your flashlight out and when you have a weapon drawn. Or do what I do, snoop around the room with the flashlight like you say, but when a monster appears, instinctively and frantically smash the fire button as quickly as possible, and get down to 2 health because you forgot you still had the flashlight and instead of giving that imp a good shotgun blast to the chest at close range, you've been clubbing him with the flashlight all this time!

am i the only one playing through doom3 and thinking "wow, quake 4 is going to kick ass on this engine!"?
Not so much Quake 4, but I'm nearly fucking PISSING myself thinking of Soldier of Fortune 3 or Jedi Knight XXVCLDCXLLCDIII with this engine. Seriously Raven, what do you want / need to make this happen?

No shit...EVGA seems to be taking their time getting back to me. I'm trying to stay positive here, but the idea that I might not get this resolved until mid-next week is kinda pissing me off.
I honestly think it's a hardware issue in my case, but proving that is gonna take some time - WHEN they respond to me.
What's sticking in your craw, nin? I've been out for a week or so, so not really up to date. Maybe I can throw some mildly misguided clues your way.

Best Buy |

I was in Houston the past weekend, and zipped by a local Best Buy on tuesday morning, to be pleasantly surprised that they had it.
Then things turned a bit more sour. I had bought tickets to tuesday night's Astros game vs the Braves, and apparently the Astros have a deal now that if you buy tickets, you get a coupon (the back of your ticket, really), that gives you 10% off any REGULARLY PRICED game at Best Buy.
Full of joy, I hand over my 10% discount coupon. Only to be told by the fucking peon bint clerk that they don't accept the coupon for "new" games for some reason. Nowhere on the coupon does it say anywhere that this is only valid for blablablabla, the only thing it says is regularly priced games. Doesn't get more regular than a game that came out that very same day?
Last time I've bought a game at Best Buy. Fuckers.
Btw, it runs pretty well on my machine at 1024x768 with High Detail, but I can switch between 640x480 at Medium detail to 1280x1024 at High Detail, and get the exact same framerates. Which would indicate to me that my graphics card (Radeon 9800 PRO) has no trouble handling it, but that my poor processor (1900XP) is straining itself to draw all this goodness.
Only annoying thing is that when the game encounters something new, or loads a new level, I get massive stutters while it loads stuff into memory, which makes the first ten seconds of a level, and the first time I meet a new monster completely unplayable.
I had the same thing in Farcry, though, so it's probably nothing Doom 3 specific, and more that my memory access isn't all that great.
Time to go Dual Channel.

If you guys would have pre-ordered from EBGames you could have been just like me. That sucks. I also pre-ordered from ebgames, but lately I've been having great luck preordering it online and picking it up in the store.
I beat the first "boss" monster, but now that my 6800GT video card is finally coming (long story), I'm going to restart the game after I install my new card.

Political discussion predicated on factual history shows I'm virtually always correct. Virtually? Virtually? Is this the new modest Halsy or do you have a fever?
I feel so sorry for you guys who'll already be finishing up DOOM 3 while I'm just getting it in the mail. You'll all be wishing you had something new to play while I'm just installing the game. If you guys would have pre-ordered from EBGames you could have been just like me.

or if/how well the Doom 3 engine scales for larger environments. Finished the monorail level a little while back and while the outdoor areas weren't Far Cry big they were quite large with no noticable framerate drop. I'd say that the Doom 3 engine will be able to handle outdoor areas pretty well.

I have to applaud id here - they did a great job of scaling the options in such a way as to make it playable - and still damn good-looking - on systems I didn't think were capable.
At home, sure - with a 2.7, 1 GB RAM and a shiny new 6800GT, I expected sheer perfection. And I got it - along with a now nearly paralyzing fear of the dark.
But I didn't think I'd be able to get away with playing it on my laptop. A Pentium M 1.7 with 512 of RAM is nice, but I didn't think there was a mobile video chipset in existence that would run this thing very well. Just a GeForce 4200 Go - and I'm able to run it at 800 x 600 with Medium Detail just fine, so long as I leave AA off. (All other advanced options on.) Now, if I turn AA to 4x, I better drop down to Low Detail if I want more than a slideshow, but still... consider me impressed.
Makes me think I could have kept my Ti4600 for awhile longer.

"Cannot read file pak002.pk4, are you sure it's there?" asks the install disk. So I click yes and try again. And again. And again and again and again. This sounds identical to the common FarCry install error:
"Error 1311. Source file not found: D:\game.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it." the fix is Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy Devices: Restrict CD-ROM access to locally logged-on user only If this is enabled, set it to "Disabled" re-boot and try re-installing
also in the Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon - AllocateCDRoms must = 0 (zero)
