What I really want to see is the current generation of video cards (hopefully including something that's in the $250 price rane) compared against the old crap cards like what I'm looking to replace. Such a chart would give me a better impression of what the benefits of upgrading to. Jim, check again. They go back to a P4 2.4 and AMD XP 2500+. They even go back to an ATI 9600XT (maybe earlier), and the 9600XT isn't really much faster than a regular 9600 (it costs less than $200 USD).

The [first "benchmark" was worthless. They tested only with like a 3.6 and 3.2 GHz CPU and nothing lower than a 9800 XT. The second benchmarks was very broad, more-so than I would have expected from any site.

Sure, it would have been "nice" to see them benchmarks a ti4600, but they didn't. Fortunately, an ATI 9600 is only slightly faster than a ti4600, so you can gauge it that way. It looks like that card will only handle medium quaility (high might be pushing it), and 800x600 or maybe 1024x768 for decent frames per second.

Keep in mind, only the slower CPU's are tested against the slightly older video cards. In all, there were like 10 CPU's, each with around 5 video card combinations (new CPUS = new gen of cards, older CPUs = older gen of video cards).

A P4 2.4GHz isn't exactly slow, but it's not bleeding edge either. You can build a P4 2.4 or AMD 2500+ w/ ATI 9600XT for pretty damn cheap. I think the AMD CPU is like $80USD (maybe $100 USD).

Sure, more benchmarks for CPUs below 2GHz would have been nice (they do offer a benchmark of a 1.5GHz though), and more of the older video cards (ti4600 and Geforce 4 MX). But their second benchmark hardly focused on "$3000+ USD gaming rigs."

"Half Life 2 looking like Half Life 1? Ehhmm... are you sure you haven't watched a friggin' Half Life 1 movie?! How the hell can you say that?!!? This is something I totally don't understand, seriously. About the whole movies.. They surely show some great friggin things not one other game is equal to yet!"

But I don't see anything I am impressed with. I don't see anything that is beyond what everyone else has done. Like I stated....waiting for MODS. Half Life 1 I played 1 time. Half Life 2 I will play 1 time.

I can say that because I have backed it up with examples, unlike your rambling. And if you say, but the magnetic gun, that is so cool. Other games have already included that. In fact, they are 2 years old or more. I don't have a list in front of me(at work), but I know they are in my collection - on top of that, the idea is not new, the concept, etc. In the movies I have watched (all from the web) I have not seen anything in the movies that made me go, "Oh wow, that was the coolest thing I have ever seen, I can't wait to get that game." It will be another title to add to my 500+ games I have collected over the past 15 years.

Doom 3, I am enjoying becuase it met my expectations. The only thing it lacks is wide open spaces with mobs.

Bats.

he only site that has any benchmarks that I have found is HardOCP, and what did those idiots do? They bring FOUR LOUSY CARDS TO TEST WITH, all of which are the most high end cards available.

How will Doom 3 run on anything below a 5950 geforce? There is NO INFORMATION. How am I supposed to make a purchasing decision on what card to buy to play the game if there is no information available other than for $400 cards which I can't afford?

I've noticed that this is an issue with hardware review sites in general, and it annoys me as well. Usually when my card gets to be about 1.5-2 years old I get in the market for a new card. So I go to the review sites to see what the specs and performance are. What I really want to see is the current generation of video cards (hopefully including something that's in the $250 price rane) compared against the old crap cards like what I'm looking to replace. Such a chart would give me a better impression of what the benefits of upgrading to. But no, instead they pit all the latest generation cards against one-another, and run the tests on the brand new alienware box that fedex just dropped on their doorstep 5 minutes ago, not last year's hardware like most of us are actually running. Kind of useless IMO, unless you're dumping your current rig altogether and just starting from the ground up with a budget of $3000+.

About Doom 3... don't expect too much different gameplay moments. It's all just shootin' and you don't really have the ability to do anything else with your macho marine. I don't say that's a bad thing, it's Doom. Some hell of a lot cool ingame movies and scary moments though!

It's so fucking repetitive it's not funny. It's basically walk into a room, 5 monsters spawn, kill them, walk into next room. And pretty much all rooms and corridors look alike. And there's 20 hours of this according to stupid pcgamer.

It's needs something like separate missions like unreal 2 or something. It's just level after level of run, gun, repeat.

but the atmosphere is so fucking good!
I play it with the lights out, sound high and it's scary and makes me feel...uncomfortable (if that's the right word).
Audio logs and emails make for great reading and listening, environments are very well done and believable...

I can't get enough of this (not repetitive at all I think).

Next time, pay in advance.

I DID pay in advance, in full. That's why I am so god damn pissed. I could understand if I had only done a partial reserve, but c'mon, it's bought and paid for

One more note about the game, I am playing on Veteran difficulty and do not find it very difficult. Given I save a lot, but that doesn't correspond to load a lot.

Most monsters die in one or two well placed shotgun shells, and I have yet to reach a state of critical health, ammo, or armor.

I'm not sure what kind of contorted look I gave my cashier, but I'm sure it wasn't pretty.

I'm thinking I woulda fucked him up, if he did that to me...

If it makes you feel any better, I was at CompUSA on Saturday, and they went in the back and said, yes, they had 60 copies in a box. But no, they couldn't sell me one...

Electronic's Boutique and a bunch of other retail stores are already putting the game on shelves, but my EBgames.com order still hasn't shipped. God dammit this sucks. I figured EB would ship to their online customers first, but noooooo...

I'll echo Ray's comments..I ordered something from there one time and it actually showed up before they updated their page to say it shipped. So don't lose hope...I'm sure there's a LOT of those going today.

Nothing is more irritating than getting the call from my local Software Etc. that Doom 3 is in and ready for pickup, then going down there, asking for it, having them pull it out with your name stamped on the front of it, raising it within TWO FEET OF YOUR GRASP and then suddenly going "Oh wait, we can't sell this until tomorrow".

I'm not sure what kind of contorted look I gave my cashier, but I'm sure it wasn't pretty.

EBG.c may have time yet; although not in the past six months or so, it used to send out the shipment confirmations in the morning. Basically, a game would ship out Monday and you would not know aobut it until Tuesday AM. I was charged earlier than normal so I am presuming they shipped it out today.

If not, EBG.c really dropped the ball this time around...

Down to thirteen hours :D,
Ray

Well, it's not that creepy but the sound is awsome. My one real beef is the game is too frickin dark. Aside of that, it's the same game I played 10 years ago with a graphics facelift. That's not really a bad thing. Runs great at 1024x768 medium quality everything on with a 2.8p4 1Gig ddr 333 and an old Ti-4600 ultra. The video card really kills you with this one. Cranked everything to Ultra at 1600x and I got about 4 FPS!
