I'm just tired of seeing grossly over-inflated estimates of damages. Its assumed that each and every time a copy is pirated, a sale is lost. In a game where hardcore fans just CANNOT WAIT to play, this is the most untrue. Some of those people will go on to buy multiple copies. Some of those people, would never have purchased it anyway, even if it was 'unpiratable'.
It doesn't really justify it of course, but I'm sick of seeing 'omgz 10 copies leaked, thats a MILLION DOLLARS LOST!' just like the record companies like to find some kid and sue them for 50,000 dollars for giving a cd to their closest friends, "becuase thats the damage they caused". BS.
Here are the facts.
1. No matter how long and complex, CD keys are utterly ineffective in preventing at least the single player portion of a game from being pirated. All the pirates need is ONE KEY. They dont really even need to generate it, but they can.
2. Encrypting the contents of CDs, files, etc, does nothing. Pirated copies are exact duplicates (with encryption and all, if necessary) with cracked EXEs. Encyprtion does nothing. Not even for multiplayer.
3. CD-Keys can help with preventing piracy of online games, if you have a large key space of which a tiny fraction is actually populated with legitamate keys, and they are 'hard' to guess / generate.
I figure, MMORPGs dont have to worry about piracy much.
Multiplayer-focus games should just use CDkeys with a valve style (won/steam) authorization server system... (one that can't be spoofed easily, which aint too hard).
Single player games are IMPOSSIBLE TO PROTECT from piracy.
Adding dongles, strange cd-protection, requiring disk in drive always, adding bad sectors on CDROM to 'protect' it, making it so the user has to jump thru CD KEY hoops, or do wierd registration steps, or install copy protection drivers in their system which breaks their cd burner (its been known to happen), ... on a SINGLE PLAYER GAME... is just retarded and pointless, and only harms customers.
