No game demo.
I know it's id, but say it's another game. You shell out fifty bones for it and get it home. It runs slow, the play is garbage, and you would never have purchased this game if you had any idea. Where I live, there are roughly 12 major game providers- NONE have a return policy other than exchange if the game has been opened. So you're screwed.
Can anyone think of a game that fits that to a tee? (cough DAIKATANA cough)
I test drove my last car five times before I decided upon buying it. I played the Unreal 2004 demo and wasn't impressed with it and cancelled my pre-order. I heard one decent song on the last Metallica album and couldn't find any music vendors that had a cd sample so I could gauge the rest of the CD. I turned to e-mule and after deleting the mp3's I downloaded I congradulated myself for saving $16.99.
Much like language, it's not the content, it's the intent. I've donated more than my share of franklins to shareware and open source without any legal obligation. I've never kept a program I downloaded and used without purchasing a copy.
I have no guilt. No company was deprived of any money for their efforts and I was not taken advantage of by a shoddy product. You think someone who downloaded a copy of a game with no demo and decides the game isn't for them and deletes it is a criminal? I say the multi-million to billion dollar middlemen providing no consumer protections are criminal. At least auto dealers have lemon laws to keep them in check most places. Paying $54 for the priviledge of seeing if the product you bought is a sham or even compatible? Comparing this shit with murder... jesus christ... chodes.
