Impending DOOM

A few DOOM 3 tidbits: Deciding to be part of the problem, Long-awaited Doom 3 leaked online is the BBC announcing the availability of the warezed version of DOOM 3, showing a surprising degree of familiarity with the piracy scene (thanks Indy Hunter). There are also DOOM 3 benchmarks on both Telus.net and VR-Zone Hardware. Also, the Bjorn3d.com Forums have a bunch of DOOM 3 screenshots they are collecting for their eventual review of the game. Finally 1up has posted what may well be the final DOOM 3 preview before the game's (legitimate) availability (and the first review is in today's reviews section as well).

Yea plain and simple, if you can't afford $40 for a DVDRom or $100 for a DVD Burner, yet you will pay $200 to $500 for a video card....you have issues.

Actually the "chunk" of users without the DVD is quite large. Larger than you think it is.

Really? Please post your source of statistics for exactly how many people have a Doom 3-capable video card and yet no DVD drive on their machines.

Oh. You don't have them, because you're talking out your ass. Gotcha.

About putting it on DVD for piracy reasons:

That would stop them for all of 1 second. Its pitifully easy to keep track of what is accessed where. Pirates have been 'ripping' the vital parts of games out of larger files for decades now, it would not even make them blink. It wouldn't even slow it down, it would take a small chunk out of the customer base (those without the ability to read DVDs) and piss off customers (having to have this huge install / disks / messing with disks during runtime / constant access)...

Yes, double-layer DVD burners are out and for relatively cheap.

Now, finding and then paying for the damn media is something entirely different...

Having a single-layder DVD-/+R/RW CD-/+R/RW drive,

Here's a way to reduce piracy that would've worked well for Doom 3. And it's stupidly simple.

Embed the data for the game into larger files -- huge files. So large that they completely fill a double layer DVD. Fill the rest of the space with junk data. Then, while people can still rip the game and post it on [name your favorite site] and then let others d/l it, it would've been so damn big that would've killed off about 3/4 the leechers right there. 9 gigs is a lot, even for your typical pirate. Better yet, make it install from 2 DVDs. Or 3. No joke. They don't need to actually have 3 DVDs worth of valid data. Just spread the data accross 3 discs. And DVDs are about as cheap as CDs.

Also, make it select some random file from one of the discs to get its HUD graphics from so no hacker can just clone their installation and reduce the install to 3 CDs again.

Make sure it only installs from a DVD as well, if that's possible. Many people don't have DVD burners yet. (In a year, this will be different.) Anyway, can you even buy a double-layer DVD-R? This would make it a bitch to handle. Not uncrackable, but the idea is to keep it from being cracked for a while, through the major sales period.

I just don't understand the hesitance to use DVDs for games.
It's completely retarded. Nobody who can run Doom 3 is going to lack a DVD drive. And using DVDs in the manner I mentioned would not eliminate piracy, but it could greatly hinder it. 27 gigs is a fat download. 1700 MB isn't.

(Oh, don't give me that look, I have a laptop with a Radeon 7000. I can't play it, so why would I d/l it?)

Why o why would the geniuses at iD software spend years making an incredible game and not give even a little thought to copy protection?!? Seriously, the cd-key is a joke, as is the need to keep the disc in the drive. Those don't even stop the casual pirates. Did they ever?

I can surely think of much more clever ways to handle this, but this seems like a no-brainer. So easy, so effective.

Do not upgrage your computer without playing first...
Mobile 2500+ running 210 FSB at 2000mhz
...usually run at 2500 but the summertime is too damn hot.
9500 Pro

I'm running the game with full eye candy at 1024 with 2x antialiasing. It's not blazing but I'm seeing about 20 frames. I know what your thinking must lag like crap but actually it is very playable and it looks soooooo pretty I don't want to turn it down. Every once in a while it will hiccup but very forgiving based on the gameplay overall.

My point is DONT UPGRADE until you've played this game because if my system runs it fine then all you 9700 pro and better vid owners should be all *shits and giggles* when you see this

Yeah, it would kill me...

Every_so_often a game comes out I simply cannot wait for. I do not play a ton of games; especially on my PC. It really takes a special title to get my blood pumping. I spent some decent cashola upgrading for tomorrow. I am playing it tomorrow night. Peroid!

I am a little leary about my 9700 Pro, though..

I ordered it locally due to the overwhelming abundance of video game stores within a ten mile radius of where I live and work. I figured 'Hey, all these guys are bound to have it come August... I'll preorder at the one on the way home.'

Sigh.

Is anyone esle really pissed right now because they just found out that the local GameStop they pre-oedered their game at is not recieving any until 08.05.04?

I ordered mine online from gamestop and it's already in the hands of the fedex guy...

It was a local store that screwed you? Or online? Cause online should be shipping...

Now I have to run around like a mad man looking for a non-preordered copy tomorrow... assuming this is indeed the case. Aaaargh!

Would it really kill you to have to wait an extra day?

I'm in a simlar situation, it has to do more with my video card than the game. The way I see it, I didn't have to pay shipping, so I didn't really lose out on the deal.

An extra day or two is no big deal. Just try to avoid the screenshots and and other spoilers. It's not like fruit, it won't spoil.
