No Win98 DOOM 3

In today's (unusually late) DOOM 3 newsbit, a post on PlanetDOOM confirms from Activision that DOOM 3 will not run under Windows 98 or Win98SE, but that Windows XP or Windows 2000 will be required.

197. Doom 3 on ANY OS (Windows 98 or Higher) Apr 16, 2005, 21:59 DeathBlossom

Open Doom3.exe with a hex editor. Find the words "GlobalMemoryStatusEx". Change the Value of only "Ex" in that line. Change the 'E' to 00 (Zero, Zero) and change the 'x' to the same. Now it runs on Windows 98SE. For those that hate XP, game on! BTW, I am running a Sony Vaio 2.8Ghz P4 with HT. 2 Gigs of ram and Windows 98SE and I can run the game on the Ultra high graphics setting with NO problem. Graphic card is nVidia GeForce 5200FX 256Mb. I dont like being forced to use any particular OS and that is what is happening with XP. So myself and like minded people figure out ways around it.

OK a slight eidt
Win Xp advantages
can edit files GREATER tan 4 gigs (vs. limit of 4 for 98SE)
CD wirting software built in
but already have many cd writing progs
Nero easy Cd etc. and like them better
has (PRO version)good security but can get this with 3rd party soft with 98SE

etc. etc.
yes better mem but I will not go over 1 gig for quite a while

so if you added up the hours below likley at least 70 hours and could be much more.
no justification for this many hours.
so a quick install to antoher partition/drive could be done in as little as 2-4 hours even with a few drivers if needed
i.e. if you have the latest video and or other cards.
so if you really want to play the game
but not update everything
- do the minimal

still not fair that ID did not allow it to run on 98SE unless there is some good reason. does anyone know!
please only answer if you know whatg you are talking about.
I have a free (bought by client) but it is unfair for the rest of you.
And those of us who are not students and 70 hours is worth between $3500 ($50/hour)and $14,000 (200/hour)!!!!!!

Hope this helps

Tommie "Acerex"

P.S.
Oh and by the way the "are" in "I are a genius" was on purpose.
Obviously it should be "I am a genius".
That was supppose to be funny.

ok - just lost the long e-mail - overwrote it with my new password via copy - yes I are a genius!!! ha ha !!

But at least I can get win 98 SE to run with almost zero '0' crahses unlike the other IT pro (hmmm!) above.

short summary of win xp over win 98 SE
no time to edit all your info

win xp has only a few advantages e.g. edit 4 gig files
I run 3 desktops & 2 laptops on a LAN at home.
had a large data company - up to 300 people
1 runs downloads all day
only reboot every 20 - 60 days!!
& only for software upgrades,
almost never crashes.
only 1 computer crashes and it is when I am adding many progs and/or have excessive windows open.
this still only happens a few times
OK earlier IT guy that's 5 computers and almost no crashes except on 1 when it is abused. Perhaps retraining is in order or you are UNLUCKY!!
to upgrade all my progs even with a very good upgrade install by the xp upgrade option
I would still need 50 hours to get all the software running and all the drivers updated.
If the upgrade does not go well it could be many more hours
I also have a great backup method that will not work in XP
I could figure out how but this would take 10-20 hours!
Bottom line - too many hours for very little gain.
So as suggested earlier run XP on another partition or hard drive.

I run it (a copy given to me by a client who wanted me to train hime via phone) on a seperate hard drive.
I have many reasons to do it this way versus a partition but have no time to explain this.

And note that M$ is now suppoting 98SE until June 2006!!

So it would have been proper for ID to allow it to run on 98SE unless there is some big prob with this.

I too like win98se but I also like the way winxp handles memory. So i just installed both, end of problem for me. I can go on with the future games, and still run and or play my older games. I don't understand all the fuss.

XP copy protection is shit, buy an OEM copy and install it where you like as many times as you like. Anyone that moans about upgrading is simply lining Microsoft's pockets... well, so is upgrading graphics cards to Nvidia or Ati (every other year), so it upgrading processors to Intel and AMD (or Cyrix - hey, there are some 98 users here after all ;)) Yeah, you can argue that you get a more tangible benefit with processor or graphics, more tangible than an OS upgrade, but like it or not, WinXP is technically superior to 98 et al. And, at the end of the day, as has been said several times, if you have a DIII capable system, you probably have 1Gb+ of RAM, in which case you're hitting bottlenecks the second your computer is turned on.

Took the words right out of my mouth and Thief 3 only ran on xp or 2000.

at least D3 will work on DX7 cards, T3 refused to run on anything that didn't have pixel/vertex shaders.

not that i'm bothered, i'm all for progress.

Way to keep the thread on topic there Sinner. Who really gives a shit about your lifestyle, I know I for one don't. As far as not finishing highschool, nice work you tard. With regards to Sixis' post about you working the street, hows that working for you sinner?

Oh and nice sig Gandhi

Regarding the topic at hand, I agree that those running Win98 in general own systems that won't come close to running Doom 3, and that Windows XP is better equipped to handle a goliath like Doom 3. It is unfortunate that a few people will have to buy XP or 2000 but thats the way the cookie crumbles.

Anyone running Win98 is more likely to have a system that can't run Doom3 though...

But I know a couple that will just install 98SE on their new hardware, mostly because they're cheap or just can't afford it.

Your freakish friends are part of the reason I said more likely. Fact is, most people who have win98 are the ones who simply haven't bought a new computer since they got it with their system...

Farcry runs over 40fps with everything except AA on highest, and it don't bitch about 98!

Sixis, I would be curious how FarCry would run on the *same* system, but now with Win XP on it. Very likely you would get better FPS since XP would be better able to take advantage of that gig of RAM.

I don't think I would have been running Doom3 on less than normal settings, Farcry runs over 40fps with everything except AA on highest, and it don't bitch about 98!

You are at your limit of memory that you can use with Windows 98 - you'd eventually have to upgrade because
Windows 98 isn't designed to handle more the 1GB of RAM.

People that would run Doom 3 in Win 98 will most likely run Doom 3 with 1998 graphical settings. Anyone that has a rig capable of running Doom 3 has a rig capable of running Win XP. There is just no excuse. Anyone who is upset by this doesn't deserve to play in a cutting edge hobby.

In 2008 we'll look back at XP just as fondly, because Microsoft's future OS's minimum specs will REQUIRE the horsepower of today's high-end machines.

You make the mistake of thinking that XP is somehow better than 98, in much the same way that a Radeon 9800 is better than a Radeon 7500. And that my friend, is a filthy, dirty lie.

No.

XP is more stable. Period. If Microsofts software strategy bothers you that much, stop bitching and install Linux.

178. 5 dollar Windows Jul 28, 2004, 12:56 Celestial Toad

You can buy Windows through some universities for 5 dollars.

I got Win2000 Professional, WinXP Professional, and Office XP for 5 dollars each at UAB. (University of Alabama at Birmingham) And you only have to sign up for one class to get it. A lot of people on campus don't even know about this deal, but if you go over to the bookstore they will hook you up.

The "corporate" or "enterprise" versions of WinXP do not have the hardware change reporting crap or whatever it is called.

And if you have problems recording or ripping CD's just use Nero or any of the other zillions of programs available for this type of thing.

And I can run some very old games on WinXP. I can run Wolfenstein 3D, the Doom trilogy, and the Quake trilogy on WinXP. Usually you can hit "windows compatibility mode" and stuff works. And for some notoriously hard to run games like Ultima VII you can get programs like Exult that will allow you to run it under Win2000/XP.

And if you really hate Microsoft it is possible to edit the startup screens and logos to create your own "version" of WinXP or Win2000. You just have to disable Windows file protection and edit some .dlls and what not. There are websites that explain how to edit the crap out of Windows.

My point is that there are usually ways to correct or circumvent many of the problems/complaints people have about Windows 2000/XP.
