Half-Life Hitbox Bug

An extensive post on the Natural Selection Forums offers details on a bug they've been battling that turns out to be present in the Half-Life source, rather than their mod. The problem seems connected to client prediction where the final player on a full server (i.e., player 10 on a 10-player server) is difficult to hit because the visible character on screen is not in the same location as his hitbox. They have determined that this problem is present in other (perhaps all) Half-Life mods, though it is not clear if it appears in unmodified multiplayer games. The issue also seems more evident the faster the bugged player is moving, which may be why it was more obvious in Natural Selection games.

Isn't the important thing not the number of "hit-boxes" or their locations, but their relationship to the onscreen model? If a player is made from 18 hitboxes, then I assume there are 18 semi-overlapping 2d rectangles that can register a hit from another given player, and these rectangles change alignment and shape based on the positions of the two objects in question, right? Now, do we know whether or not the models in either HL2 or D3 are going to be in complete sync with the hitbox locations during all cycles of animation? And how far away from a model the hitboxes stretch will be a matter of fine tuning performance v. realism v. gameplay. Personally, I think hitboxes should be a little bigger than the actual on screen target if projectiles are small (like bullets) and aiming is via mouse and is quick response. While it might be neat the first few times a kill escapes you because the bullet went between hitboxes that accurately model areas that a model is inhabiting, I wonder how long before that "cool factor" will give way to annoyance?

I'm not in the biz in though, so what the hell do I know?
