Reznor on DOOM 3

A Q&A on nine inch nails access (thanks Not One Of Us) offers Trent Reznor's take on why he did not end up working on the DOOM 3 soundtrack as planned. Here's the deal on what happened, and Trent's guess about who ended up doing the theme song:
john carmack and i had established a friendship while working on quake. he came to see up playing during the last tour and wanted to get my feelings on a remake of doom with a new advanced engine he was working on. we discussed how cool it would be to create a place that was immersive to the point it wouldn't need a "soundtrack" -- the technology was advanced enough to visually and aurally to create a rich environment you could truly explore and inhabit. we discussed my involvement as the overall sound producer -- from foley and voice over to ambient world noise.

later, i started work on what would be used at the e3 show 2 years ago. it was exciting working in a totally new way with new tools. i was working directly in the game editor and with the programmers refining the sound code and helping the environment come alive. tried "tuning" various environmental sound sources so they'd cohesively interact with on another in a "musical" way. the advanced technology provided enough horsepower to give me a seemingly limitless amount of freedom. it was a lot of work, a lot of thinking in a different way, and a lot of fun. i was working with the best guys in the field -- true geniuses.

out idea was to have no music, apart from a main theme i'd write for the intro. no rock, nothing current sounding, nothing to date the game.

well... eventually time and money and bad management came into play and it didn't work out. disappointing on a number of levels for me, but that's the way it went.

I have seen the engine at work and it is great. i'm looking forward to seeing what they've done with the game.

and i guess tool did the theme song

It's not Tool's work.

Chris Vrenna (ex-NIN) and Clint Walsh did it.

i don't know, I guess I'm just more of a geek for concept albums, which Jane Doe was more than the new one. Another great metal concept album that is overlooked is Brutal Truth's Sounds of the Animal Kingdom, and of course Isis' "Oceanic"... a new great doom album "the best doom album ever" says Aqaurius records (famous for Andee and his experimental metal label) is Esoteric... it's really good too.

<i>saint you moron, i didnt imply shit about any kind of expert crap - all I said is that since Im a sound engineer, surrounded by recording musicians on a daily basis, that it tends to generate a more discerning ear and makes you more picky about what you want to listen to in your free time</i>

So, I suppose by the same token, that each and every security guard in an art gallery is an expert in Picasso and the like.

Been reading the ensuing arguments from Space Captain and everyone else...quite entertainig C'mon folks, just ignore the guy...the argument is baseless and is not worth the time slamming him. No need (from either side) to attack someone personally because of their opinion on a topic as insignificant as this Just ignore the guy..

I totally agree with you Flood...If it's Tool who did it, it is weak as hell to do a cheap copy of Lateralus (no creativity at all involved) if it's Tweaker it's just a pale copy of Tool's work.
Either way... it's bad and It's kinda sad too. For someone who's never heard Tool before it might sound kinda cool, but if you are a Tool fan like me this is lame no matter who's the real person responsible for the creation of this theme song. Not that it's a bad tune, just that the better version was already recorded by Tool before. That's reminescent of most tunes remake we hear from rip-offs like Kid Rock. Man these peeps build up a reputation by playing bad versions of songs that were originaly created and recorded by artists that did the same song 10x better. It's sad that new generations think this is totally new stuff and the original artists get no credits in the minds of this new generation, while the rip-offs become milionaires... Very sad. In 10 years from now, I'll release my version Of Purple Haze and people will think I'm the shit new guitar player while nobody will even know who Jimi was. Sad... Nobody will ever be as good or even better than Jimi himself... but some ignorant kids in a future generation, I'm willing to bet, will hear his songs done by some idiot and think; Oh man this is the shit!

Nah, Last Light is as good as anything on Jane Doe. The new stuff is great live, too.

Download over buy just because buying something you've never heard isn't a good idea.

The amount of CDs you have means dick.

If you're trying to talk about fan of a variety of music instead of a radio mix, well, you can have a few hundred CDs if all you buy are artists featured on those NOW CDs.

Not to mention many of the more interesting artists out there right now don't even release CDs, they stick to vinyl.

95% of my music collection doesn't even have a UPC code it's so obscure. Does that make me better than someone? Of course not. Avoiding crap like Korn, Saliva, Reveille and Godsmack might, I suppose.

Go download some Converge and Righteous Jams.

I just noticed that the time the topic was posted resembles the length of the song Lateralus (9:24).

Don't know why that fascinates me.
