Fallout 3!

Interplay Announces Fallout 3 Licensing Deal With Bethesda and Bethesda Softworks to Develop and Publish Fallout 3 (thanks Frans) are a pair of press releases announcing the continuation of the cult-classic Fallout series. Here's a bit:

Interplay Entertainment Corp. (OTC Bulletin Board: IPLY - News) today reported it has entered into a licensing agreement that will allow Bethesda Softworks to develop and publish Fallout 3, a sequel to the highly popular Fallout role-playing game franchise. The deal awards Bethesda exclusive worldwide rights to publish the title for PC, console, and handhelds with the rights to develop and publish future sequels. Interplay retains all online gaming rights for the Fallout franchise, as well as ownership of the Fallout intellectual property. The company announced last month its intent to enter into Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming with titles including Fallout.

Commenting on the announcement, Interplay Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Herve Caen said, "This is a good agreement for both companies and for gamers. Although we had a high level of interest in licensing Fallout among several parties, we are most impressed by Bethesda's execution of role-playing titles. Bethesda is an ideal steward of the Fallout franchise."

"We're extremely excited about this opportunity and what it means both for Bethesda and for Fallout fans around the world," said Vlatko Andonov, president of Bethesda Softworks. "Fallout is one of the great RPG franchises. Millions of Fallout games have been sold worldwide, and fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of a Fallout 3 title.

Fallout 3 from Bethesda sounds cool. As long as it is still third person. I don't think it would work in first person.

I honestly don't care about the "fuel" issue in Fallout. It's a GAME for God's sake.

But I would rather see The Elder Scrolls 4 : Whatever than Fallout 3 right now.

Maybe Blizzard will hand Bethesda the rights to Diablo 3, and it will actually get done. lol.

And maybe EA will give Bethesda the rights to Ultima, Richard Garriot will join in, and then they can do Ultima Underworld 3 using the Doom 3 engine, and also do Ultima 10 single player. This is right after Gabe Newell starts serving Ice Cream in Hell and DNF is released.

97. Reasonably good news Jul 13, 2004, 15:59 Zadig

Fallout 3 being worked on once again isn’t particularly interesting news but that it’s being done by Bethesda instead of the munchkins at Black Isle or Bioware is nice to know.

They’ve had some serious technical issues in the past but Morrowind actually worked when released and still is very nice to look at, while their writing is deeper and more mature than anything else I’ve played (hint: prostitutes don’t equal “mature”.).

Adding color, sound, and lots of well written background material can’t be bad, while even doing small things like making the ‘good guys’ not entirely good and ‘bad guys’ not entirely bad and getting better rewards from the latter would be nice. It would be a big improvement over the simplistic black/white choices you get to make in most RPG’s and in pretty much all Black Isle & Bioware games (Planescape Torment being the notable exception). I can also look forward to having a story where every nuance isn’t explained by having NPC’s talking to the monitor. Slowly. Using small words.

The final product could still end up being disappointing, but since the very foundation of Fallout is nonsense (cars can travel across California dozens of times before refueling and vast quantities of that fuel can be stored in your pocket, while the best military hardware uses the same processes, yet somehow there was a cataclysmic war fought over another, now clearly obsolete, fuel source.) it’s going to be pretty hard to say Bethesda ‘ruined’ it.

The worst case scenario is they turn it into a faux non-linear game like KotOR where you can rob and murder your way along the rail road tracks that constitute the game world yet maintain a perfect reputation as long as you denounce your targets as ‘evil’ enough times

Uhh...the "Doom for Windows 95" launcher?

I am just using whatever came as default with the Doom Collector's Edition that I purchased for $15. I have been burning through a lot of the older, cheaper titles (XIII, Arcanum, Star Trek: 1337 Force 2, Beyond Good and Evil, etc.) and I picked this one up yesterday.

Obviously, it is an older title...but I can still appreciate all the fun I have had with these games. No other game has yet to perfect the same (relative) balance of weapons, monsters, levels, and sounds.

Killing that first cacodemon for the pulse rifle was sure bliss. Shooting the barrels, blowing away the soldier into the bloody bits...the satisfaction of a good shotgun blast...taking out a pinky with your chainsaw or even your fists... Mmm...budget gaming goodness.

Thinking id kicks f...iendish ass :o,
Ray

Edit: Title clarification.

So am I the only one excited about a possible Fallout game from the first-person perspective?

I'm intrigued by the possibility. On the one hand I'd be completely satisfied if they used the original Fallout engine and essentially created a stand alone full length expansion pack. On the other hand it would be pretty cool to see the series incorporate some new ideas. Something I was thinking about last night was that the game would keep the world map style exploration and travel with various adventure location sprinkled throughout. The world map would be overhead with either 2D or 3D terrain and simple marker indicating you travel progress across the map. When an adventure location was entered it would go into a 1st/3rd person perspective similar to Morrowind. When you'd talk with an NPC rather than going to the talking head dialogue screen you'd actually watch the NPC in the gameworld talk to you. Combat could be similar to Full Spectrum Warrior, although not necessarily real time, with the exception that only your PC will directly respond to your commands, follower may or may not listen to you dependent upon their AI state, your charisma score/leadership ability, the nature of the order etc.

While what I just described is a significant departure from the Fallout 1 and 2 the overall effect and experience would be the same.

With regards to console games...obviously, not much can be stated as pure fact since we are only dealing with the first announcement, but it seems like a foregone conclusion. Bethesda has previously released its product on both the PC and consoles and you generally would not purchase worldwide, multi-platform licenses unless you tend on releasing a title worldwide on multiple platforms.

Edit: From the interview in the news from today. PR speak for "Yes."

GameSpy: Since you now have the rights for the franchise on console, is Fallout 3 also coming to consoles?

Pete Hines: Our intent is to develop and publish the game for a number of platforms.

Thinking the lack of any soul really hurt Morrowind,
Ray

It's going to be a console game as well in case you haven't noticed.

Tell me where this has been stated by a Bethesda developer. A link would be great.

Unless the console and PC versions are developed seperately, that won't happen.

Morrowind was developed simueltaneosly for XBOX and PC, I didn't see any console compromises in the PC version.

Just because it won't be "Morrowind with Guns" doesn't mean they won't turn it into an FPS or some other crap.

So rather than develop something they're good at they'll choose to develop a first person shooter all because of the statement that it won't be Morrowind with Guns? Call me dense but your logic has slipped past me.

So Bethesda, outsource the writing to the original writers, where ever they may be. Use your studio to work on what you are good at, which obviously does not include writing.

Bethesda has good writers, they're focus just hasn't been on plot or NPCs. Where they have excelled is in the background details of the world, the books, the different conversation topics, the theology and politics of the world, etc. I don't see why the raw writing talent they possess can't be transfered into the areas where Fallouts writing shines, namely the NPCs and dialogue.

IGNPC: Can we expect something similar to the work done on Morrowind, in terms of that style of game experience?

Pete Hines: Again, it's early to say, but it wouldn't be a leap of faith to say that we plan to use technologies in development otherwise. You could make some fairly safe leaps of faith that it would be similar in style. We're not going to go away from what it is that we do best. We're not going to suddenly do a top-down isometric Baldur's Gate-style game, because that's not what we do well

Who can say? At least there is a chance now instead of having absolutely nothing.

Also, Morrowind and its two expansions (via a GotY) were released for the Xbox...

Having picked up the Doom collection; going through the games again,

to purchase the first two in the series to see what all the excitement is about huh?

Never played either one...

I picked up both in a combo jewel case for $10 awhile back...if there's a Wal-Mart around, they should have it there.

What part of their explanation that this isn't just going to be "Morrowind with guns" didn't you understand? Bethesda aren't idiots, and they are fans of the Fallout games....... clearly they are going to try and make a FALLOUT game, not Morrowind with some Fallout graphics.

It's going to be a console game as well in case you haven't noticed. You tell me how they are going to provide original Fallout gameplay on the Xbox. Unless the console and PC versions are developed seperately, that won't happen. Just because it won't be "Morrowind with Guns" doesn't mean they won't turn it into an FPS or some other crap.

Fallout simply doesn't match with the younger demographic of console players.

not sure where you get that fact from, but I thought that consolers are an older crowd these days, and playstation 1's success came from targeting the 19-25 crowd or something?

What if they hired the writing talent from fallout and combined it with their "open-world" strength of morrowind?

TBH, I thought morrowind had great stories inside it, especially with some of the books you pick up on the way. The only thing they needed for that game was to make the world more 'living', like how stalker is being talked up. but I guess that is pretty tough to implement.

I like the idea of a gameworld that changes and passes you by!

Look through the bargain bins of any local retailers or for any online retailers that specialize in low stock or out of production games. There is a nice bundle of both games that, if you can find it, can be had for about $10. Certain RPG bundles will toss in Fallout for free.

If you are dying to blow money and directly purchase the bundle, feel free to be absurd:

If crappy www.chipsbits.com ever restocks, give it a whirl. Heaven forbid Interplay's online store be working...

Really wanting a Shadowrun sequel,
