Out of the Blue

In what's starting to take on that surreal nightmarish quality, reports of further advertising problems rolled in yesterday. After cleaning up the mess from my head exploding, I am endeavoring to address this once and for all. On a positive front, at this point the brain trust at advertising high command seems as alarmed by problem as I am, and are committing to removing every external campaign that could be causing problems so that this can be straightened out (you may well experience blanks in place of some of the ads here as this is worked through). The necessity of the advertising here has been discussed at length in the past, and the level of understanding most people have expressed about this is heartening, making me feel that much worse about ads that are causing people problems. My sincere apologies.

I can only hope that the next time I discuss this issue, it will be because this ridiculous situation is resolved.

there's still a place for line-based editors like vi

Strictly speaking, vi is not a line based editor. ed is. vi is a screen based editor. sed is a streaming line based editor. And emacs is its own OS.

ultraedit forever

Ok. Is it installed on every Unix box known to man as part of the default install?

No?

Nevermind.

That said, when I have to use vi I grit my teeth. vim has spoiled me.

And I'd bet I'm more efficient in vim than you are in ultraedit or any other editor. Yes, vi's syntax is arcane, but once you learn the basic concepts it's extraordinarily powerful.

Yeah buddy... bring on the text editor wars!

Well of course your pissed off. Not only does he drive bad, I just want to rid the world of the VI dinosaurs, come on man the text editor has evolved...ultraedit forever.

Yeah, UltraEdit is an awesome editor. Except that it's Windows only, can't be used in a text-based environment, and it's not free. Despite text-editor evolution, there's still a place for line-based editors like vi (which nobody who knows better would refer to as VI).

I really dislike not having an 'offical' copy of XP. I count myself lucky to have gotten Service Pack 1. Man, I miss the old days.

Chalk up another vote for AVG from me.

Also y'all might want to keep http://www.majorgeeks.com/ in your favorites list.

I downloaded the evaluation version of Windows XP Service Pack 2. I don't know if I feel more safe or not, but the nice little shield icon in my system tray is a little reassuring. Once SP2 is final I think I'll do a clean install of XP and apply all service packs, install AdAware, AVG, and Spybot and then make a Ghost image of my drive. Then if something ever happens I'm prepared.

Whilst doing some snooping around a few weeks ago, I found out something interesting. IE's default settings for cookies is set to automatically accept all 1st and 3rd party cookies. That means, anytime a website asks you to let them put a cookie on your machine (you'd be surprised about how few amount of sites out there don't ask), it's automatically allowed to install itself and do it's thing. Creepy.

Damn, I think that I live near this 1336 (not quite 1337) |-|@><oRz. That first "burrito" video was at the Steven Creek Boulevard Exit of Lawrence Expressway (the building across the stop was the old Accolade building.)

Actually Blue, I've never encountered any problems when hitting your site. Are you sure someone's not messing with you?

mmm... every day i update adaware and there is almost always a new version. however, when i was using spybot it never found a new update when i checked for one... which is why i switched to adaware! very odd...

doubly odd since I have the opposite experience. SpyBoy always has new updates while Adaware does not. Maybe I have a firewall issue....

You know... Normally I don't gripe about much... But this guy pisses me off.. No, it doesn't have anything to do with his achievement of installing a computer into his motorcycle. It has everything to do with his riding... Check out his videos of his "helmet cam"... This guy gives motorcycle riders a bad name. If I saw this guy on the road, I'd be tempted to open my door as he rode by me.

For the person wanting the antivirus program... Avast! flat out rocks. Constant (very quiet in the background) updates, automatic program upgrades, very accurate at catching things... I love it to death!
And it's free for home users.

And no, I don't work for them, just a fan :-D

Yes Riordan is a clown, but he's still less of a jackass than this guy.

Democratic state Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, who had scheduled a protest by civil rights organizations, canceled the demonstration after an apparent mix-up over the girl's racial background.

Dymally was quoted in the San Jose Mercury News Thursday saying the child was "a little African-American girl. Would he (Riordan) have done that to a white girl?"

The girl is white, with blond hair.

Dymally did not return telephone calls. His office issued a statement Wednesday calling Riordan's remarks to the girl "outrageous and irresponsible," then issued another statement Thursday saying, "To err is human; to forgive is divine."

"Race is not a factor in this issue," Dymally said in Thursday's statement, adding that Riordan had apologized a second time. "It is time for us to move on."

"Yes, there was a recently discovered exe hole in Firefox, but it was fixed via extension in hours, and has been fixed by patch now. Compare that to how long it takes MS to even acknowledge an exploit."

And that exploit was because of WINDOWS, not firefox. They just disabled the ability to access the shell though firefox. And guesswhat--MS has know about the problem for a long time and hasn't bothered to address it.
