Universal Combat Expansion

This press release announces plans for Universal Combat: Hold the Line (thanks Frans), a Universal Combat expansion, while simultaneously, somewhat confusingly, heralding the end of the short-lived UC series (which was planned as the new Battlecruiser franchise), saying the previously announced UC: Edge to Edge is now a working title, and that the game's official title will be unveiled later this year. Meanwhile, here's the announcement of Hold the Line, planned for release this holiday season:

We have no immediate plans to develop another stand alone Battlecruiser title in the short term. As such, today we are announcing the above currently in progress addition to the Universal Combat franchise. Our aim with UCHTL is to improve on various critical aspects of the previous title in order to provide an even more advanced and fun title based on lessons learned from the previous offering.

Probably the last of its kind in the Battlecruiser series as we have come to know it, we are making UCHTL the all-encompassing game with as much advancements and fun filled gameplay in first person planet-side careers as is currently seen in the space borne careers. An extensive FAQ which will be frequently updated to reflect inbound questions, is located at www.3000ad.com/products/uchtlfaq.html .

You are welcome.

The stuff he said, the way he said it, and how far he went with ridiculous lies is hilarious…I do not think I have ever read anything as funny…ever.

I've heard of Battlecruiser, of course, but I've never heard of Derek Smart until today (I guess I only skimmed those awful Battlecruiser reviews in PC Gamer).

82. Time For Reflection Jul 8, 2004, 21:43 Hpankin

This thread is perhaps the most entertaining Blue's News thread I've ever read, and I usually read them all. Even all the HL2 release date threads and Doom3 release date threads don't compare to this one. It's not even close.

I've heard of Battlecruiser, of course, but I've never heard of Derek Smart until today (I guess I only skimmed those awful Battlecruiser reviews in PC Gamer).

This thread has filled many many blanks in the big picture. I've known so many people like Derek Smart. In fact, that's the real reason I decided to post this entry: because I can totally relate to this guy. Not because I admire him so much, but because I have pity for him.

Derek Smart is like this dude I used to work with many years ago. This co-worker of mine thought he knew everything, he would scoff at your attempts to prove him wrong, and even when you did prove him wrong, he would never admit it. My old co-worker never learned how to be gracious, never learned how to debate properly, could not recognize when a valid point was being made, probably learned early on to be on the defensive because of his minority status, and as a result, alienated everyone around him. This can be exemplified by looking at Mr. Smart's post on page 2.

On the other hand, that same co-worker of mine was as seemlingly tenacious as Mr. Smart, too. I really have to give Smart credit on that point. There are so many bad reviews of his games but man, he just keeps on coming, like Rasputin, totally unaware of his gaping wounds. You all have to admit that his idea is a good one: an open-ended space sim where you can pretty much do as you please.

So, I'm feeling part pity, part admiration. It's a very peculiar feeling. I believe the primary attribute missing in both Derek Smart and my old co-worker was this...a sense of perspective.

Anyway, do yourself a large favor and check out these links...

Hmm t-shirts. Now theres an idea. "I got flamed by Dr. Derek Smart and all I got was this lousy t-shirt." On the back: "Feel the love! You wanker."

I was thinking a variety of colours, but here it is in black.

#first post#

Ah yes, a typical news day at the [hog] farm for 'tards.

At the very least, I'm glad that none of you abject wankers can play my games; because then, this is the kind of crap I'd have to put up with.

...then again, reading these posts from a bunch of immature tits, should be enough evidence that they don't even have the brain power to lift the toilet sit up, let alone open the game's manual to read it.

Remember the rules, you only get one chance

Wow. Mr. Smarts intelligence is obviously inverse to his ego .....

76. X2, UC, and nephews Jul 8, 2004, 18:14 Evil Timmy

I sorta liked X2. The graphics were pretty good, the universe was expansive and detailed, the gameplay was open, and other than some incredibly silly names (Ban Danna?) the writing seemed decent. What turned me off to it was the complexity of the user interface, and how much you had to do to accomplish a simple action. Something along the lines of radial menus or other context-sensitive menus wouldn't have been amiss. After a few weeks of on-again, off-again play, I uninstalled it and haven't played it since. It may be a great game, but the learning curve was steep and the payoff seemed far away and rather minimal.

Now, I've co-GMed a number of games, writing loads of characters, backstory, and even custom rules. I've spent days of time getting prepared for a truly enjoyable experience. I've been into computer gaming for well over a decade, have a library of hundreds of games...but I don't have the patience to put up with a game that's more work than fun.

Enter UC. There's no tutorial, the manual is long and could use a much better writer, the graphics can't match up to most three-year-old games, and the game basically drops you in the deep end without a life preserver. After about fifteen minutes, it too was uninstalled. I unloaded it on an asshole acquaintance of mine for $5, and am surprised at the lack of death threats (although he did seem a bit more pissed off than usual).

Basically, Derek, get your ten-year-old newphew, or someone's kid from the office, to play your game. If they can't grasp at least the basic gameplay mechanics of your game within an hour or so, with no outside coaxing, then it's time to rethink how your gameplay works. I'm not saying they should understand the intricacies of politics or the economy, or all the twists and turns of the story, but they should be able to accomplish something in terms of the game and have some fun.

LMFAO - only problem I see is we'd have to pay him royalties and due to the likely demand for this quality merchandise we'd actually be funding further Smart related game-pai

We could always say Dr. Derek Stupid.
Anyone who would get the joke would know who and what it was about, while not legally being about him.

Thanks for posting about this, Bronco. (post #8)

I've never tried any of his games, but I can honestly say that now I will make it a point not to.

So, the next time you even think of posting about a problem. Don't.

All class there, DSmart.

Also, actually taking the time to post a response to all the insults - and taking immaturity to a whole new level in the process - is the sign of a real winner taking the high road. Nice.

...

Maybe if you didn't play the part of an "asshat" each and EVERY time you made a comment - people would cut you a little slack. However, that seems to be too much to ask. You deserve the worst that the people here and EVERYWHERE else can come up with.

In short DSmart, G.F.Y.

Other T-shirt possibilities..

"You bought my game - I bought a PHD."
"Customer Support is for 'Noobs'"
"DSmart - My games don't suck. You do."
"Hi! I'm Derek Smart. Kill me, I deserve it."

Well I hate to admit this, but I bought UC. I I went to Best Buy picked up Painkiller,Madden04, and thought why not try something new. Well nedless to say I bought the game with the nicest sounding words on the box. The thing is ,is I remeber reading about this game and couldnt place where I heard about this game before. So I couldnt place the game and thought why not give it a try. Anyways thats the last time I just buy a game blind. Never did play UC did get it installed but then looking at the manual and the thousand of commands turned me off.

Damm they made the game look good on the box too.I still might give it a go,but with far cry, pain killer, true crimes, and BV it's gonna be hard to give it time.
