On the DOOM 3 Date

A couple of recent doings have stirred the pot a bit regarding the release date for DOOM 3, id Software's eagerly anticipated upcoming shooter remake. DOOM 3 Release Date Set on IGN points out that Gamestop and EBgames each are listing August 3 as the "official" just-announced release date for the game, for which the release date had been "when it's done" until it was recently announced that it would be done this summer (story). On a related note, a few folks have pointed out that the British Board of Film Classification has a DOOM III Listing (thanks for small "b" blue for being the first) with a rating for the game, a seeming indication that they've already been able to review all its content, which some are taking as another indication of the game's relative imminence.

Running around a ship? Are you sure you weren't playing that crappy mod?

I'm pro-id.
I'm pro-Valve.

About the only thing I'm anti about is Unreal. I just can't have fun playing UT. I've tried. Sure, it probably has something to do with having been raised (multiplayer-wise) by Quake 1.

All ID games have sold bucket loads.

Maybe your so simple you can't understand a "complete" game in respect to a "tacked together clone"

I PLAYED HALF LIFE FOR A WEEK AND GAVE UP CAUSE IT WAS REPETITIVE DRIBBLE (especially running around a ship trying to find the way out yawn). AT LEAST Q1,Q2,Q3 WERE different, and its funny how all games now use Quakes "connect in real time" instead of lobby's.

"WHO SETS THE STANDARDS?"

ID DOES?

ID WHO?

ID MAKES GAMES THAT ROCK

Ditto

And to all the "ID criticisers" - i say suck it

IF YOU DON'T LIKE A GAME - DON'T PLAY IT

Just don't let me listen to your whining.....

You "id bashers" whine more than a vineyard

WHINERS - your jealous of ID's success & the fact that your "baby" HL is a ID game clone....

Speaking of clones - doesn't a lot of the screenshots for HL2 look like the WAR OF THE WORLDS album cover? hahaa haa

NOT ONE ORIGINAL THOUGHT HAHAHHA

WTF?!? My 9700 Pro is still holding strong! T3 does not slow down at all. Sure, it's not maxed out but at 1027x768 with AA, who's complaining!?!

Doom3 was made with the 9700 in mind, and slower cards did great with the leak, so I am expecting an optimized release will do just as well. I am not worried about HL2 either.

I still live by buying a gen or two old. Half the cost and can still play all the new games. Plus, all the driver issues are worked out.

I will probably not have to upgrade until Q4 or HL3 at this rate...or at least until the next gen comes out and the currently release cards by ATI, etc, drop in price.

On another subject...I just had to buy a new graphics card for Thief: DS, but could only afford a 128MB GeForce 5200 FX. It's really not faster than my 64MB GeForce 2 Ultra, except that it's got dual RAMDACs and a pixel shader. Should I trade it back in for something better? Will Doom3 require a better card? I think I can catch a sale on 5700's in the next week or so...

You can find good deals on used cards, especially now as everyone is upgrading to the next generation and want to get rid of their old cards fast. Heck, I just sold my 9700 Pro for $110+shipping, can't beat that seing how much slower ATI cards still sell for more than that.

Take a stop by www.Rage3d.com , then check the forum and go into the deals thread. Though, they are down for their vB3 upgrade. But once it's up, if you have $110-$150 to spend, create a thread in the deals section asking for a 9800pro or similar with your pricerange. Most likely you'll get a response in a day or two.

RocknRoll -

I have not experienced any problems with my AIW 9800 Pro. Only issue I had was KOTOR when it first came out, but ATI had a hotfix on thier site to fix that. Other then that, it has been smooth sailing.

To each his own.

look into ATI's 9600XT line, unless of course you hate ATI

I don't hate ATI. It's just that in the beginning of the graphics card war, some of the games just would not run on an ATI, and many of the others would run, but with problems. Then came the battle between 3dFX and OpenGL support which ATI fully supported 3dFX internally, but OpenGL was an external dll which ran in computer memory and not in the graphics card...thus slow. It just seems to me that ATI has made the wrong choice each time. That's how nVidia found it's niche...supporting OpenGL internally so that flawless graphics for Quake was a reality...they also worked with Carmack as did Microsoft. Much of the really good stuff in DirectX is in there because of nVidia and Carmack leveraging their power against Microsoft to make sure that the industry get better as it grows. From what I can see from Thief3 and it's use of Pixel Shaders for shadows, the difference in the new games will be astounding. Quite possibly a bigger jump than we saw from Doom to Quake, or even from Quake to Quake2. I'm sure Doom3 will include a lot of attention to detail...a flying flaming skull isn't very scary if you can see through it's cheekbone, or a monsters face is made up of just five sides and the nose is just painted on.

I would not upgrade my graphics card for just one game

No, I will have to dissagree with you there. Doom3 or one of the other games coming out this year (HL2, TF2 for starters) will definitely require a better graphics card and I guarantee you will find it worth the money.

The Descent issue you discussed are called portals. Basically a polygon would be a doorway to another location. Instead of drawing the polygon you draw another area, or object.

Infestation for the Amiga was a full 3D FPS also. You had to enter, and wonder around an underground mars/moon base, destroying all the alien eggs before they hatch, or after they hatch. YOu start off being dropped off on the surface, and have to enter base. Pretty cool game.

I would not upgrade my graphics card for just one game, especially Thief 3, which is very unoptimized graphically. You may also want to look into ATI's 9600XT line, unless of course you hate ATI, in which case just buy the best Nvidia card you can afford.

Thats your opinion, not a fact. In fact I believe ID has released some of the worst games ever, mostly from the perspective of failing to live up to the potential. The main one being Quake 1.

maybe Quake1 single player wasnt the greatest, but take a look at multiplayer. Quakeworld. enough said.

Wolfenstein and doom were inovative yes..

Yes slightly innovative. probably the sole reason why the FPS is around today.

ID.... bring it on... bring it, the fuck on... lay these retards to rest.

The only "Official" word is that Doom3 will be out this summer. This only means that it will be released before Sept 22 cause that is the first day of Autumn...but, perhaps Toddh meant the equitorial summer (which is year round). Or, perhaps Toddh really is going to select some gamers and stuff them into one of those nutty private space ships and blast them off to mars.

id like to summarize the outcome of the discussion thus far:

- firefox is the best browser
- you need firewall and antivirus
- windows is the best gaming os for x86
- hl2 will probably be the best single player game due to scripting and story. tho it doesnt look as mind-boggling as it used to, because far cry came out
- doom3 will be frighting and miles ahead of everything else that comes out this or next year, graphic-wise
- id software does the best graphics, but rather simple (very very simple) single player games. kind of 3d pong where you can shoot people too. this doesn't mean the games suck, they rock, but they are not as immersive as i.e. hl or gta3

my 2 cents
