Just wanted to add my 2c as a former SWG player. Sorry if this gets a bit long

I started the game when it was released, well 2 days after release since it wouldn't work hehe. Stopped playing before the free period ended. It was horrible. Chat was constantly crashing, crafting was screwy due to tools locking up. CS was terrible, I imagine due to thousands of others in line. Theres lots of things that were terrible, most people interested in the game have heard or experienced them already.

Fast forward, I decide to give it a try again about 7 months later. Alot of things work better, but still some annoyances around....and lots of new problems.

GCW (Galactic Civil War) is completely borked. Currently PvP seems to be the only reason to play at all. Unless you want to waste time getting Jedi, or you like doing missions that are the same, just replace creature_01 with 02 for variety. Theres basically little content other than PvP unless your a masochist. Oh theres crafting, but thats masochistic in its own way. Or sadist if you look at it from your mouses point of view.

Its promised the GCW will be fixed.... its the last thing being fixed before xpac, which makes no sense. The long awaited combat rebalance is 2nd last, which again makes no sense. It could be argued that these things take longer to do, but I call it BS. Fix the major things gradually, rather than waiting to give it in one lump way down the road after everyone is gone, or pissed off. Fix the major appeals to the game first, not some rarely played class who can dye my hair neon pink.

Anyway enough of this, its turning into a rant.

Anyone considering playing, save your money and/or bandwidth. SOE doesn't deserve either till this very long beta test is over.

last I heard, the space expansion can't hold a candle to the larry holland sims and that the expansion was nothing more than a glorified arcade game like the old wireframe death star run game back in the 80s...cept with better graphics to woo the ignorant folk

One of the problems right now is the focus developers are putting on questing. WoW is all quests to the point where you're actually at a disadvantage if you aren't linearly doing quests. You advance much slower if you decide to just go out and kill monsters because of the ridiculous experience penalty system. The genre is actually getting more restrictive as time goes on.

mmos suck cuz they're controlled by only a few companies...and they're so hard up to mimic the success of EQ (call it good or bad if you want, they made a lot of money) that they're too afraid to try things differently very often.

MUDs and MUSEs were so much better on average..why? cuz there were literally thousands of them. anybody with enough knowledge of C and the dedication could make their own game. and i'm sorry, but your average gamer has better ideas about what makes a fun game than most multinational corporations.

until someone can make a robust, versitle MMOG codebase where someone can customise it to any game your imagination desires....MMOs will always suck....while taking way too much money out of your pocket at the same time.

To the guy who thinks the screenshots of the Space Expansion look no better than X-Wing Alliances, I think you must be wearing your rose tinted glasses my friend! The Jump to Lightspeed screenies look on par with, if not better than, the Gamecube Rogue Squadron games. Just look a the detail on the Nebulon B Frigate!

I doubt if anyone is reading this thread at this point because usually by about the 20th post on Blues News, the flame wars begin and it all just turns into a pit of vipers - but I love the sound of my own voice, so here goes.

I've played SWG on and off since beta. It's a game I want desperately to like but it's nearly impossible for me for most of the same reasons it is for everyone else - it's dull, blah, blah, blab, etc.

I'm currently playing City of Heroes and having a great time.

I believe that the lesson other developers should learn from these two games is this: focus on a few key systems and forget the rest. Forget the economy, forget crafting, forget advanced chat systems, forget it all and just get the basic combat, grouping and questing systems right.

The MMORPG genre continues to trade on it's "potential." You can say it for the genre as a whole and for the individual games - once they get the technology fixed the genre/insert MMORPG of your choice will be amazing. As fans, we continuously give the developers the benefit of the doubt. We're willing to play through a buggy mess for months at a time based on "potential" alone.

So what seems obvious to me now is, when launching a new title, don't pull a SWG and try to include every feature under the sun, none of which will work because your development team is spread so thin they'll never get it to work. Instead follow the lead of CoH and just get the basics right. Make combat fun, make it easy to get a group and make it simple and fast to find content appropriate for the group's level. We, the players will wait for the rest, just like we wait for you to fix all the bugs and endure dull game play while you get the balance right. Reward us rather then punish us for giving you our $15 every month.

Kosumo, they start billing you retroactively, with intrest, once you "upgrade". The problem with that is that the "Mum" is fixed and doesn't help out anymore. Instead they've tacked on some annoying NPC called "Girlfriend" that bleeds you dry. You may as well get a bot to play for you, 'cause it's a pretty shallow game.

Is anyone still playing Xwing Alliance MP, is there a good server browser or something to find matches? I've got the CD around here somewhere and would be interested in some space combat, I've been missing it since Freelancer (and really since Freespace 2!)

Wonder what it looks like with FSAAX6 and AAFX16 at 1600X1200 on my new PC..?

I've been playing this MMgames called 'life', it's good, but not great, theres alot of grind in it and most of the NPC are very unbelivible, the one I can 'Mum' seams to be stuck in a 'clean and nag' loop.

Recently some one told me to get 'a real life'? is this the squeal and, if so, can i get a spaceship this time?

btw why is no one charging me a monthly fee, I've been playing for 27+ years and not a bill yet, not looking too forward to having to pay up one day

What I find most humorous about Star Wars Galaxies is the way it was promoted at E3 this year. Every article online described the big improvement to the game as the ability to fight in the spacecraft against other people. Well, LucasArts excellent X-Wing Alliance game also provides that and has been available for several years. The ships in Star Wars Galaxies don't look much better judging by the screenshots, and X-Wing Alliance can be purchased for no more than the price of one month's subscription fee to SWG. Plus, X-Wing Alliance has an interesting single-player campaign in addition to multiplayer.

JoeCool speaks the truth brothers. Amen.
I tire of all the MMOG debates I have. Almost as much as the silly Console/PC thing.
Just all go out and buy EVE, and be happy you made the right MMOG choice
