Glad to hear all the good news about the demo. I'll have to wait a couple more weeks to try it when I get home from my vacation.. and buy it soon after.

Happy to see everyone ignore the Smelly troll and closing as Ray,

43. What the f*ck!!?! May 31, 2004, 17:04 Eldaron Imotholin

So this game isn't friggin' supporting Win '98!? Thanks for mentioning that after downloading half the day! Jezus I'm past being extremely angry now. Forcing gamers to install Windows XP is just madness!
Yes, WinXP is ok, but I like Win'98 more. Period.
Ok ok.. guess I'm forced to use WinXP.
ok ok.. guess I'm forced for some anti-franchising action too in madness.

I'm so pissed.

Guess I'm calmer tomorrow..

This game rocks, I'll probably buy it. Way better sequel than DX2 was.

40. Cool demo! May 30, 2004, 02:24 Ant

I am not a big fan of Thief game series, but I have to say the third series especially with the long demo was impressive. I love the new graphic engine. Pretty lights shining through dark corridors in the light fog. I love blackjacking. And as a mean freak, I even blackjacked a cat (it was noisy and I am trying to be stealth!) and a rat. I love shooting those torches with water arrows. "Hey, what happened to that torch?" hehe. It took me over two hours to finish this long demo (tutorial and a real game level).

I won't get the full version due to too many games, lack of free time, and lack of patience (stealth type of game). Check it out!

One neat thing I noticed is a sort of stats tracker outside Garrett's apartment (across from the old well just outside, by the torch.) It notes all the breakings, killings, etc. from the previous night

Also, if you jack somebody in a shop, make sure you go back again the next night and note the subtle... differences

Off to taff a bit...

x800 pro is out, but good luck finding one. A lot of the online vendors are charging a $50 premium right now. A few retail stores have received shipments, but have quickly sold out (all eight stores in the immediate area are out.)

x800 XT is looking to be the end of next month.

Nobody that I have talked to yet has an exact date for the so-called 6800 (any version.) Most are saying within the next one to two months.

Having just come back from Frys; having a new TDK DVD/R/RW,
Ray

Yeah I noticed the game running jerkily on 4.5 drivers. I'm now reverting to 4.4.

BTW, when will the X800 XT be out? I remember them saying it would be around May 21st. I haven't seen em at new egg yet, and the regular X800 pro isn't in stock there. Also, any sightings of the Nvidia 6800? I want to get one of those cards, dagnabit. I checked Pricegrabber as well. Couldn't find the X800 XT Platinum Gold tooth version there either.

Anyone know if they're out at all yet?

Fun demo! I kinda disturbed myself by having to repeatedly stab a lady in waiting as she ran screaming through the castle. And the corpse yoga is plain silly.

I'll get it if nothing better comes out in the meantime as It's two weeks till release here.

Sorry, I mean "roam around an empty level."

Since I have a blacjack fetish :o, I normally whack anybody/everybody I can find and then I am used to going around and huting down every little piece as I do. In the city, since the NPCs respawn, I could whack a guy 50 times and still have him appear in the city again.

Basically, in the city hub, you will never clear out the level and you will always have to be careful while moving around - you never know if that next NPC is a guard or aligned with one of the factions...

Noting that it does bump up the tension,
Ray

Morrowind = Free Medi-fantasy type game, I guess that's quite a large definition with plenty of possiblities.

What do you mean about the hub and not being able to freely roam? Are you not just another citizen in the town when you're walking around?

There is a city broken up into a few parts (Xbox memory limitation...) and that acts as a hub to all the other levels. I.E. you go to this one building to get into the watcher's domain, that loads up a new level, you get a given quest from the watcher, leave back into the city, go across two or three city segments, find the door/portal/pathway to the mission level, and then you start that given level.

The hub is little quirky, though, because NPCs and loot respawn (at varying points) so there is a feeling of repetition, but it does always keep you on your toes (no clearing it out and being able to freely roam.) Now, the individual missions levels can be completely cleaned out, allowing you to roam them.

As for size, the missions levels, especially the last half, do open up a bit more (or are just more creative/unique,) but there still is nothing on par with what you could find in Thief and especially Thief 2. That original rooftop level would easily hold all the city hubs in them and the final building/castle at the end of the Thief 2 rooftop level could easily hold about two or three DS levels.

Pick it up; it is pretty good and - ironic that you said that - certain parts of it do almost seem like Morrowind.

Thinking the pagan markers are a bit bugged,
Ray

Is there an open city? I thought it was just a series of missions like Quake 2 or something. I like the demo, if the full game is a lot more open and Morrowindy, it will be excellent.

I gotta agree with SMA. I just finished playing for the evening, and I'm basically in the same part of the game. It just opens up more and more, with each new 'area' being rather unique and dripping with atmosphere.

I've also heard my first clues as to what The Cradle is that several Ion guys teased about on their board. After reading some non-spoiler comments about how disturbing it is, and hearing this tidbit, I'm not sure I even want to go there...

YAY Weekend! Time to block off the windows and do some serious thiefin.

Oh man, just talked with the contact. The game is really starting to open up. I have both the Pagan's and the Hammerites courting my favor and offering me sidequests. I have two different primary missions to do. I just unlocked another section of the city. And I got a new ability that allows me to go to a lot of new places. Whoever said Thief3 wasn't much of an advancement over the previous games is dead wrong. While the mechanics of stealth remain largely unchanged this is not the linear progression of missions we remember from the first two games.

Wow, wow. I thought that for the most part the game would continue as it had up till now but then the game made it apparent that there would be even more depth and nonlinearity to it. Dumbed down this game is not.

This game is a worthy successor but not as good as I hoped as the game is too cramped up in tight spaces.

Some of the other missions feel less cramped. Mission 2 felt wide open and was how I'd imagine Return to the Cathedral if it wasn't haunted. Mission 3 took place primarily in the sewers and some associated tunnels so it makes sense that it would feel claustrophobic. Off to go meet a contact so I can get the next mission.

Honestly, the unreal warfare engine sucks.

I have a super top of the line system, and I can't run the game smoothly except at medium-low or lower, anything above and it's choppy city, same problem with DX2.

HOWEVER, the gameplay itself is downright faitful to the original. kudos Ion for not another repeat shitstorm disaster like DX2 was. I will definately be picking this up.

Too bad the Unreal Warfare engine blows my left nut. Good for consoles, shit for pc.
