Microsoft's new OS, already in BETA, will be coming soon, so XP may rapidly follow Win98 into the great recycle bin in the sky.
Let's think about that for a second. Windows 98 came out in 1998 (or late 1997). That mean's they supported it for around 6 years. And part of the reason for not supporting it anymore is that it's using the old DOS-based system (though it tries to hide it). XP and 2000 use the NT kernel isntead, so they have more reason to hold onto them.
Windows XP came out in 2002 (or late 2001). That means we should still have a couple of years of support left. Maybe around 2008 (though earlier).
By the time they drop XP support, PC cpu speeds will probably getting close to 10GHz. At that point, I'd HOPE I'd be using a new OS to take advantage of the new tech.
I don't need a new version of an OS every time it's released. But if I'm upgrading my PC, and a new version is out, I'll buy it at the OEM price. Otherwise, the new version needs to have something substantial for me to upgrade. 2000 was GREATLY ahead of 98 and Me (I didn't bother with Me though). XP had some better hardware / gaming support and the nice interface, but I wouldn't have upgraded had I not been building a new PC.
