It might have been a different board and person who made the comment, sorry if it wasn't you. I've been surfing a lot of forums recently. Hard to keep them all straight.
I haven't gotten caught up in the geometry at all while climbing, in fact I think this is the best implementation of mantling of all the Thief games. I'd say what happened to you is probably pretty rare as I haven't seen any complaints like this. The point of the game IS to look for items, but if said item is a ridiculously small piece of jewelry hidden behind the third leg of a small chair in an obscure corner and it prevents me from finishing the level - well, that's really annoying. I'd rather have the twinkle, though less pronounced would be nice. Digital Nightfall, in his preview, also commented on this (another long time Thief fan, like myself) and said that he didn't really care either way.
I now remember one fence perhaps didn't have lip synching, but another one did...oh well, it didn't ruin the experience for me like you. I think people are becoming FAR too picky with games. I mean, yes, let's move the industry forward, but it is just a game for Christ sakes.
