But not as fun as an argument about which is better, Doom 3 or Half Life 2! What about ATI vs. Nvidia? That causes a few people to start foaming at the mouth...

"The Isrealis and Palestinians are two of the most secular societies on earth. They are fighting over land, not gods."
Maybe, but they are using gods as a historically proven method of mass control. You need people to do something? just say you found a manuscript, or you heard god's voice, make up a holy rule, a holy enemy, or whatever. Works like a charm. Personally, i think organized religions are pure evil. This comment was edited on May 24, 12:37. |

Yes, I'm an atheist, but I might've wound up an agnostic or non-denominational Christian if it wasn't for all the hypocrisy and stupidity in organized religion. If you follow men, you will always be disappointed.

He said lots of things which are difficult to take, many aimed at those in positions of power, to do with justice and the poor. Agreed, the problem is (as you appear to know) is that organized religion has gone off and ignored those very teachings by and large.
It's not all bad. I've seen the good that organized religion can do in 3rd world countries, where the church is still one of the primary focal points of the community. Of course, all you have to do is look at places like the Middle East to see some of the horrors that that very same focus can cause.
Neither are following the teaching of their religious leaders No... depending on the sect they very well may be. There are extremely zealous factions of both Judaism and Islam that believe that God's law is still "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" and can cite holy scripture to back them up. Of course, both groups are extremists and not supported by the majority of the faith, but as long as the moderate majority is unwilling to expel them from their midst (which is difficult for both groups; Judaism has been forever changed by the Holocaust, becoming nationalistic for the first time in nearly 2000 years, and Islam specifically states that you should never hurt another Muslim) their insane policies are going to continue to shape the world.
Yes, I'm an atheist, but I might've wound up an agnostic or non-denominational Christian if it wasn't for all the hypocrisy and stupidity in organized religion.

What would Jesus have said about the Crusades? Or the Spanish Inquisition?
Unfortunately christianity was usurped by politics long ago and has served nothing more than the expansion of political power or the pockets of priests for two thousand years

I'm a Christian.
I follow the teachings of Christ. He said lots of things which are difficult to take, many aimed at those in positions of power, to do with justice and the poor. He said very challenging things and turned upside down the Jewish teachings. For example it said in the Jewish Scriptures "An eye for and eye and a tooth for a tooth". This was a simple law to help govern a developing society, to stop things escalating out of control. It is the basis of the Judicial system - a punishment that fits the crime. However it has become a source of justification for revenge "I am allowed to take this persons eye out".
Jesus came along and said "You've heard about the eye for an eye thing. I say you should turn the other cheek. Pray for your enemies". (I'm paraphrasing of course)
The Palestinians don't understand this teaching and the Israelis say they will kill two for every one of their own killed. Neither are following the teaching of their religious leaders.
The United States, whether Jewish or Christian is similarly guilty.
Anyway, thought I'd set the record straight. Peace all and if you want to chat more about what following Jesus means ask for my email.
Pete

I always find it peculiar when you get five, six, and seven year olds fighting wars that started long, long before they were ever born.
At what point to they have one another in the scopes of their weapons, do they make eye contact, pause for the slightest second, just ask themselves "Er...what the fuck?," and move on?
Look - look up in the sky. Look at that vast, open world full of planets, stars, and unknow possibilities. Now look back down at this crap and tell me why we are fighting over the petty things?
Thiking House of Sand and Fog was remarkably good, Ray
