55. Who needs another UT2004 Opinion? May 20, 2004, 13:42 d@rK 93n6u1N

I was addicted to Allied Assault online for two years. Finally broke the addiction with UT2004 Onslaught - as someone else noted, the fun factor varies widely based on who's playing. As for dodging, I personally think it's undignified, but if it works for you, fine. Few things are more satisfying than blowing a bunny hoppin side dodger to bloody bits...of course, that's mainly because I'm able to do it so seldomly!

I've noticed this Kobulb fellow spews his unimaginative ramblings on LOTS of threads here. Maybe he needs a life and/or job and/or girlfriend and/or boyfriend and/or swift kick in the pants. It's sad that the only attention he gets is reactions to his stoopid posts. He's probably a very nice fellow!

If alot of people complaining have the same specs, then it MIGHT stand to reason that something in those specs is causing the problem.
so if fact it would be you.

Are you really that stupid to imply that it's our fault for having a certain configuration? Please dont lower my already low view of humanity. It's a companies fault for not testing their game on a certain config fool.

a large portion of the people complaining also have nearly same specs. Gotta be us though.

What are your system specs Kobalt? Absolutely no problems here with my 3200+, 1GB, 9800 Pro - I swear it's the truth.

I have a 1900+, 512,9700 pro and via chip. Amazing enough a large portion of the people complaining also have nearly same specs. Gotta be us though.

To this day I regret buying Quake3. Should have just copied it and played on cracked servers. Uninspired redefined. Tiny maps, 2 lines of bot AI, meager weapons and shoebox-sized maps. Yuck!

Looks like doom3 still retains the tiny maps - let's see if the crap AI and laughable single-player has improved. Sure won't buy it, but I hope it's worth a copy.

I'm not sure if it's that the patch is inherently buggy or if it's because the servers haven't upgraded yet and there's a slight problem between the two versions.

thanx zathrus. like i said, i had some weird lag and that may have been the reason for the weirdness. i'm pretty sure that is was an isolated thing anyway and hopefully won't happen again. btw, i'm glad i can finally taunt properly with the skarj model

UT2004 is awesome, but my favorite is still Quake 3!

UT2004 is like a fancy meal that you get at an expensive restaurant where the waiter grinds your pepper, whereas Quake 3 is like Steak and Potatoes.

2k4 is damn fun, 2k3 was a chore, this coming from a clanner from UT.

2k4, if you have good players, every gametype is fun. great game. I agree about the fragmentation of the player base though. so many modes, everyone chooses their own thing, but i guess it brings in more players overall to buy the game, online i dont think it helps. who knows.

Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to release the linux dedicated server patch...

ONS=forced gameplay

Er... you're going to have to explain this one.

CTF could be described as "forced" too, since you know where the flags are, that people are going to come for them, etc.

In DM/TDM the gameplay largely centers around weapons and powerup locations.

Guess I just don't see your point here.

I don`t play ONS, just good old CTF , DM, TDM for me. ONS=forced gameplay. And I cannot stand forced anything as it feels... forced. I like chaotic fog of war, anything can happen at anytime. LOL

Yea, buy it! There really isn't any other game out there that provides
the diversity in game-play as UT2004.

Ironically, this very diversity is leading to the lack of on-line players.

I know it sounds strange, but consider when you give one group of children 10 toys to play with and another group just 1 toy. The group with 10 toys will rapidly loose interest in the toys, while the group with 1 toy will cherish their one and only toy.

No dan, ut is the worst game evar

Wow, great statement, solid support, undeniable proof. Yes, this game apparently sucks ass. Weird that it's been one of the highest rated games in the last year and thousands of people play it online everyday, yup, game sucks.

On a more serious note, I am surprised that most people are getting better FPS under WinXP then Linux.

If it helps zuul, I crashed twice last night while playing (and by crash folks, I mean UT2k4 crashed -- not my system. All I had to do was restart the game). Never crashed pre-patch. Athlon64 3000+, 1GB RAM, GeForce4 Ti4200. I'm not sure if it's that the patch is inherently buggy or if it's because the servers haven't upgraded yet and there's a slight problem between the two versions. I suspect the former though.

Crashed once while flying a Raptor, right before I was about to die, and once while flying around a Redeemer (no clue if someone was taking me out or not).

First off, the dodging is more difficult to master than straight forward physics

You're not familiar with Quake physics then. As an experienced player of both UT and Quake games, Quake movement certainly has more finesse involved in some of the difficult jumps. The classic one I can think of is in Q2DM1 where you can jump from the yellow armor to another box and then to the megahealth. You can do the same with a rocketjump, but you lose a lot of the advantage of getting both the armor and health that way. Don't think I ever got that jump down... very few people did though.

Is there finesse in UT2kX movement? Yeah. Especially things like wall jumping and knowing when to (and not to) dodge. Generally dodging in a firefight is a bad idea -- experienced players will know exactly where you're going to land (and travel through the air for that matter). But sometimes it's a good move even so.

And to you fruitcakes who state that UT2k3 is just soooo much better than UT2k4: UT is the same game regardless of year. There are new features, fine, but other than Onslaught and Assault, UT has been UT ever since UT.

The weapon load out is different, the adreneline rules are different, there are vehicles (the broken one in UT2k3 really didn't count), there's integrated voice chat, and quite a bit more. Not to mention that the single most popular game mode is one of the new bits. I played a good bit of UT2k3 (best CTF since Q1 IMO), but UT2k4 is a vast improvement over it.

First off, the dodging is more difficult to master than straight forward physics. One is an added function (a double click causes a sudden movement), while the other is standard movement. Herego, "mastering the physics" as it were, is not more difficult than being a 'stupid fuck.'

Furthermore, I agree that Onslaught is chaotic, I do not agree that BF Nam is bug ridden. Were it so, people I know who play it, would not.

And as a sidenote: UT is not the worst game ever.

While I'm typing this I wanted to state that I'm sick of you fussy, opinionated head cases wandering around acting as though you are king shit. Do the rest of us a favor and realize that you are an idiot in the grand scheme of things and save yourselves the headache of convincing us otherwise.

38. My 2004 cents May 14, 2004, 03:28 Flo

As a veteran quake player I hate UT dodging. I mean, every stupid fuck can do it whereas mastering the quake physics was a matter of excellence. That said, when I'm playing online nowadays it's most likely UT2k4 (waiting on the BF NAM patch). Onslaught was fun for a while but way too chaotic on public servers, which made me rediscover the joy of classic CTF or even deathmatch. A good 4vs4 CTF on a Jolt.co.uk server just makes my day. Sadly most of the servers have onslaught running and only about 180 servers a CTF game - bombing run and domination servers aren't even worth mentioning, although these are fun modes.

UT2K4 is a lot better than UT2K3, which was bin material..

I still prefer domination in it's original form, but the return of assault is good, onslaught is most fun you can have without a hooker:P
