Kind of jumping the gun aren't you? HL2 >> Far Cry?
Hmm, kind of difficult to say since HL2 doesn't even have a shelf date yet. I still think the gfx on HL2 (although not final) are not all that great. The gun animations are poor, and the people still have that flat look to them. I wasn't impressed by the CS2 portion at all. I do still play Day of Defeat off and on, but the newest drivers for some of the Nvidia stuff don't like to work with HL1 all the time.
As far as physics...I didn't see anything that I already had played in Far Cry. (Except for the gravity gun or whatever the hell that thing is.) The blowing up of someone across the board - rocket launcher style - a little over the top, but hey, it is HL2, what do you expect?

Actually, they more partnered with Havok than just buying a solution from them: they've been working together to rethink and redevelop things. The HL2 physics engine is as heavily modified from the Havok2 base engine as the Quake engine was modified for HL1.

Ummmm... they licensed the Havok engine for the physics. There are plenty of games out that use the same system.

how can people think far cry can compete? When did people start propagating the delusion that far cry will/does dominate? its a well made game. it surely stands on its own. but clearly, plainly, obviously HL2 >> Far Cry

No.... it was taken down. Nobody got it that way, apparently, since there were no complete seeds after they took the link and site seed down.

This video is so much better than the other one, not only because it doens't start to pixelate, but because the first half is much cooler than the second half. I just wish there was more doom 3 footage...

Also, Gamespot gave a really harsh preview on the game
Creston - When did they do that BC? http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halflife2/preview_6096237.html
Wasn't a preview, was a Hands On with a brief bit of gameplay they are showing at E3. Their article came across to me that they are just bitter that they didn't get to play more in action sequences.

How can people say that looks like HL1?
Maybe it's no Far Cry, but since when do we base things just on graphics? Wouldn't we then be saying that UFO ENCOUNTER game is better than X-COM?

When I playtested HL2 the graphics were AMAZING (the shaky cam's don't capture everything) and the physics system is far superior to that of Far Cry or any other game I've played or seen.

I don't need a fancy ass gun that shoots fries and the secondary fire is salt. Dammit, I'm tired of people ragging on Ronald McDonald's Funtastic Adventure! That game is genius!

I think HL2 will be great. It seems like the only real criticisms of it is that the graphics are a little dated compared to the likes of Far Cry. Who cares? People still play HL1 today, and it ain't for the graphics.

The only harsh thing I noticed on Gamespot is that they were saying "oh, it's the same weapons". Well, don't fix what isn't broken. I don't need a fancy ass gun that shoots fries and the secondary fire is salt. I thought the weapons in HL1 were badass, so i have no problem with it being the same ones. I'd rather have something that works rather than having some "wow, what an odd weapon" factor (although the physics gun seems to have that).

When did they do that BC? I went over there, and after almost just exiting out because Gamespot INSISTS on making you watch a fucking 49 minute commercial before giving you access to their shitty site, all I could find were a few old videos and some developer interviews (and I've just about heard enough crap come out of Newell's mouth).
Can you provide linkage? I'd really like to read that article.
Thanks.

I saw somewhere (PHL?) that HL and all the related goodness (OpFor and Blue Shift) were going to make the transition to the source engine and be released, though not for free. Probably bargain prices and available through steam, is my guess.
Just wait a few days, no doubt it'll be cleared up. Oh wait, it's Valve, nevermind....
Still, HL2 has me more pumped than I have been for just about any other game.
