id: DOOM 3 This Summer

Abandoning id Software's signature "when it's done" release date, Activision and id Software Confirm Summer 2004 Ship Date for Doom 3 (thanks Joel Bowler) sets this summer as when it's done as far as the eagerly anticipated shooter remake is concerned:

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI - News) confirmed today that id Software's highly anticipated DOOM 3(TM), will be released this summer for the PC. The latest installment in one of the most successful franchises in gaming history, DOOM 3 utilizes id's revolutionary new 3D graphics engine to draw players into the most frightening and gripping gaming experience ever created.

"DOOM 3 is the most anticipated PC game of the year and fans around the world are eagerly awaiting its release," Ron Doonink, CEO, Activision Publishing. "Id is delivering the most compelling horror gaming experience to date, so get ready for DOOM."

"This summer we're sending game fans on a first-class trip to Mars -- with a layover in Hell," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "DOOM 3 is coming to the PC and delivering the most atmospheric, terrifying and visually mind-blowing gaming experience ever conceived."

Wow Dagok you are sounding pretty closed minded and immature.

Wow prodigy you sound like a moron that cant read, considering dagok was basing his views on past id games rather then screens shots and leaks that you came out of nowhere with. He was talking about the half life leak not the doom 3 one fool.

You will remeber first time you saw DOOM 3 just as potently.

Yeah I remember the first tme I played quake 2 and 3 and wonder why do people consider those peices of shits good.

Jeez, the amount of slagging off and disappointment thats flowing is unbelivable.

You remeber first time you saw DOOM ?
You remeber first time you saw QUAKE 1
You remeber first time you saw QUAKE 2 with hardwar acceleration
You remeber first time you saw QUAKE 3 with immense graphics and awesome online play

WTF planet are you guys on.

You will remeber first time you saw DOOM 3 just as potently. This game will take you to fully true lit world to the most detailed Mars planet, and into a Hell no-one has ever seen.

Enough of the shit, and lets all wait as we have done for each new ID game that has ever been released.

rewatch the xbox video and count how many times the frame rate takes a drastic drop. And if i remember correctly the MP Doom3 demo they let people play was running at 600x480 res on high end pc's.

Unless AMD or Intel comes up with a 5gig processor by the time the game ships, it won't matter what video card you have it's gonna run slow.

Wow Dagok you are sounding pretty closed minded and immature. I'm hoping you're older than you sound. You are claiming Doom 3 will be "lame" based on the leaks and screenshots and not the game itself, so that alone nullifies your arguement as to which will have better gameplay.

You are making assumptions based on your opinion, and therefore just more useless banter. Take a step back and realize no one has a real idea of how well Doom3 or Half-Life 2 will be but their corresponding developers. Let's wait until they ship before we talk about which ones better.

I think D3 SP will be more enjoyable than HL.

HL blew me away, but I'm tired with in-depth games. I just want to creep, explore, and have tense gunfights.

Basically, I'm in the mood for a corridor crawl, and D3 looks like it'll be perfect.

Odd, I'm a bigger fan of the HL series, and of Valve, but I've got a craving for what Doom 3 looks like. HL looks like an intricate, amazingly directed movie, but I'm in the mood for something lower key gameplaywise.

everyone keeps forgetting about the peer-to-peer connectivity going on there - that is just retarded considering the amount of shit that engine has to process... there is no server to offload redundant processes

it seems to indicate that D3 MP WILL SUCK MONKEY DICK

also watched the E3 movie for the XBox...and as soon as I heard the sounds I had the opposite reaction to yours. I cringed, because the sounds are the essentially the same as the original game. They sound like shit compared to todays standards. Firing a shotgun in an enclosed metal hallway should make an enormous BOOM, not sound like a gun shot between two pillows.

Surely, they wont be the same sounds, as in the same sound files , they are of course sounds with todays quality etc. besides DOOM3 will be supporting like 5.1 surround etc and I wasnt even talking about the gun sounds, I meant those cries from the monsters etc. which brings back the memories from the first DOOM(s)
EDIT: oh, and besides the enormous BOOMs wont appear on a low quality quicktime video, taken from the XBox version of the game, no matter what it actually sounds like in-game

Currently awaiting:
Red Orchestra 2.0 For UT2004, coming May 7th. May 20th! WOOO!

I got a laugh at the HL2 being better then Doom3 comments,
Who gives a shit, thier both going to be great games....

id software makes good engines, they have yet to make a game with a compelling storyline that absorbs the player. Doom is so fond to everyone because it advanced the genre so far at the time when there was no competition. I mean lets be honest here...id was lame enough to do a remake of the Doom story instead of coming up with a new story for part 3.

Even Quake 2 for its time was not a very good single player experience and the AI sucked, especially when Unreal followed soon after. Doom3 and HL2 are going to be compared due to the proximity of release dates, its as simple as that. Based on the leaks and everything we've seen to date, Half Life 2 is going to have a far better single player experience than Doom 3. At this point in time, Im even skeptical of their ability to put out an entertaining multiplayer component.

Yes that's right. They'd be stupid to cap the FPS so low. As you mentioned, people (understandably) got confused and made a big stink about it when it was announced.

27. without multiplayer why get this? May 11, 2004, 18:21 Kobalt

Only a idiot thinks D3 will actually have a single player that will rival half life 2s, or even farcrys. And considering how any people are used to huge 20+ people servers with battle field and UT games, id better hope people like playing with a massive amount of 4 people. Well, they dont since the fanboys will buy a id game if it was just a rerelased quake 2 but with better graphics and called it doom 3...oh wait.

Oh yeah and since only the xbox version will have co op..

Don't forget -- D3's framerate is locked at a maximum of 60 fps.

No, it's not. The world tick of the engine is set to 60 Hz, taht is what you remember from when JC announced it somewhere, never thinking that everybody would read it as "capped to 60 fps". This is actually a step upwards from all (id?) games so far, who ran at 30 (I think). But this only means how often the engine enters e new state, not how often a new frame is drawn. That can be as high as ever.

Does anyone know if doom3 will be sold in a unique box like the tin box for quake3 ? I would like to see a collectors edition with extra stuff, maybe a poster with signatures.

I have a feeling the XBOX version will be out first. Shit, its getting more coverage than the PC version so that has to be a clue.

I never recommended buying the cards the day they came out, but id has often prefered nVidia stuff. If you look at all the benches for the for cards, in the Quake3 engine stuff the edge always goes to the 6800. I'd say its a safe bet both cards will be great for the game anyways. And if someone is going to spend 500 dollars for the cards, I say why not, it's their money not yours.

I've waited since December for a new rig, and I can't wait much longer on my P4-1.7ghzWil/256RDram/GeForce3Vanilla. No matter what card I purchase both are blazingly fast at 1024X768 with the IQ set at high settings.
