Return of the Prince

Ubisoft announces plans for a sequel to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, calling the "working title" for the project Prince of Persia 2, probably the most un-workable working title we can recall for a game, since it represents the fifth title in a series that has already had a Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame. A teaser website is already online, sporting the first two screenshots from the game (thanks Frans). Here's the announcement:
Action-Packed Prince of Persia® 2 (Working Title) Boasts BRAND NEW Free-Form Fighting System

LONDON -May 6, 2004 - Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, today announced that the company's award-winning Montreal studio is currently developing Prince of Persia® 2 (working title), a follow-up to the most critically acclaimed game of 2003, Prince of Persia The Sands of Time™.

The Prince has to embark upon a path of both carnage and mystery to defy his preordained death. His journey leads to the infernal core of a cursed island stronghold harboring mankind's greatest fears.

Only through grim resolve, bitter defiance and the mastery of deadly new combat arts can the Prince rise to a new level of warriorship - and emerge from this ultimate trial with his life.

In order to accomplish his mission, the Prince benefits from a brand new free-form fighting system that allows gamers to channel his anger as they wage battle without boundaries. Each game fan will find his or her own unique fighting style as they manipulate their environment and control the Ravages of Time. You can dig into an arsenal of weapons that, when used in combination, create advanced arm attacks that verge on fatal artistry! Prince of Persia® 2 promises that game fans will fight harder, and play longer, emerging from the experience as deadly-capable skilled masters of their own unique combat art form.

"Prince of Persia The Sands of Time™ was the most critically acclaimed game of 2003," said Yves Guillemot, President and CEO of Ubisoft, "With Prince of Persia® 2, we intend to build on that masterpiece that will take Prince of Persia® one step further to take over the action-combat genre. We will offer you an even higher level of excellence that should once more convince the critics and the public."

Har, har, fantastic, bombastic Dantastic.

In this case, I was not going hippie and, instead, focusing on how many games develop enhanced combat instead of actual gameplay.

How many times have we seen games with technical problems, very short completion times, and lackluster gameplay with the developer's plans for the sequel to be..............by adding 1337 |-|4><0rz Kombat!1111 as if that resolves any of the pre-existing problems or makes the game any more fun.

Thinking spending 10 more minutes in a room fighting repetitive enemies is boring,
Ray

The problem with the game comes from trying to dynamically fight the enemy NPCs versus just playing a game of checkers using the patterns. Depending on a given NPC's color, you would attack it using a handful of corresponding attacks: jump over and swipe, sidestep and then lunge, block and then attack, etc.

You could get a bit lazy about that, too, once you started using the dagger to freeze (dry? :o) enemies.

Wishing games did not so heavily emphasize or build upon combat,
Ray

TSOT was a fantastic game, one of few SP games since HL I've really enjoyed, but I'm glad I bought the one with a controller included, because it sucked using a keyboard.

Gamers in the UK are stupid. Hitman Contracts is one of the worst games I've ever played.

4/19/04 to 4/25/04 best selling games (in the US)

1 Battlefield Vietnam
2 Far Cry
3 Unreal Tournament 2004
4 Drop!
5 The Sims Deluxe
6 Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
7 Age of Mythology
8 Call of Duty
9 Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection
10 251 Collector's Edition

and for UK

1 Hitman: Contracts
2 Hitman: Contracts
3 TOCA Race Driver 2: The Ultimate Racing Simulator
4 Sonic Heroes
5 Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
6 James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing
7 England International Football
8 World Championship Rugby
9 FIFA Soccer 2004
10 LMA Manager 2004

Yes, Hitman is number 1 and 2. Blame gamespot.
MP games sell much more in the US and a lot less in the UK. Or maybe it's just this week.

A little farther back and you get

Best-selling PC games for the week of December 28, 2003 to January 3, 2004:

Rank / Title / Publisher / Average Price
1 / Call of Duty / Activision / $41
2 / The Sims: Makin' Magic / EA / $29
3 / The Sims Deluxe / EA / $20
4 / Zoo Tycoon: Complete Collection / Microsoft / $28
5 / The Sims Double Deluxe / EA / $40
6 / Age of Mythology / Microsoft / $34
7 / The Sims: Superstar / EA / $28
8 / The Sims: Unleashed* / EA / $29
9 / The Sims: Hot Date* / EA / $29
10 / Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic* / LucasArts / $29

Sure, you'd need a much better analysis to draw real conclusion. But atleast you can see that neither of the genre (MP or SP) as a real advantage over the other. On the upside, The Sims are loosing ground. Wich can only be good for PC gaming as a whole

You didn't tell that to me at all, you told it to somebody else.

Anyways, as I pointed out sort of, mainstream games are generally not multiplayer in the first place. Stuff like UT2K4 doesn't appeal to some shmuck with a gateway who just looks at the box.

#28, i told you this once already. Single player games definently tend to outsell multiplayer games by quite a large margin. I do follow sales charts. The reason is because single player games don't require internet connections, and so are accessible on more computers. You also don't hear about single players a lot, because they aren't online, where the online players hang out. They're all at home, playing.

Ok, so most non-mainstream games without multiplayer will sell worse since piraters will market the singleplayer.

And you have that backwards; multiplayer-games sell MORE because you need a CDKEY these days to enjoy it. That's my hypothesis at least, I don't really follow videogame sales charts.

[edit]And yes, Die By The Sword was the pinnacle of what melee should be. That much freedom was just such a fantastic innovation, too bad nobody else picked up on it.[/edit]

"You can disagree if you want, but the fact is games without multiplayer will sell worse since piraters will market the single player."

Tell that to The Sims and Rollercoaster Tycoon. And, more recently, Far Cry, for all intents and purposes, as the multiplayer is by no means fantastic (barely memorable), but most who play love the single player experience. It seems that the facts are against you, in that a look at the Top Ten lists shows that no one tends to fare especially better than the other, although there does tend to be a stronger presence of predominantly single player games. Your little band of pirate friends do not represent the consumer base, it seems.

This reminds me of the fourth installment in the Metal Gear series, which was dubbed "Metal Gear Solid 2." Of course!

My understanding of the marketing logic behind not putting numbers on sequels is that it is believed to scare away newcomers to the franchise, who think they shouldn't buy it since they never played the previous titles. Or at least that's what it was back when Might & Magic started the trend. Mind you, Hollywood picked up on this strategy too.

Jordan Mechner was only a "creative consultant" on PoP:SoT. Still, I'm glad they brought him on. I was afraid that after the critically-acclaimed high-budget flop The Last Express, he had been relegated to the John Romero Hall of Unbankable Game Designers. Hope he's in on the new title, whatever the hell they end up calling it.

I'm agreeing with the guy who didn't like fighting. I'm guessing it's because I chose the highest skill level, but at the end whenever you fight you'd just get waves and waves of guys, it just ended up being tedious.

...I will pick this one up after having the fun I did with the original, but I was hoping they would do more than make you the 'ol bitter man come back again story and that the combat was not (seemingly) the main focus.

No doubt I am showing my gaming age :o, but I remember when Prince of Persia was about puzzles and adventure.

Ravaging time left and right,
