Lets not forget the first time Doom3 was shown to the public @E3 it was running on ATI R300 Hardware (9700). Heck, ATI was even the premiere videocard sponsor of Quakecon 2002 and had their cards and logos everywhere.
When the Doom3 *Alpha* was leaked word somehow got out that it was ATI who leaked the project. I'm sure both ATI and Nvidia bid against each other for the Doom3 deal, but ID was most likely punishing ATI for leaking their Alpha when they gave the promotion to Nvidia.
Also, it isn't Carmack's fault that Nvidia has superior OGL performance. Just look at any OGL 3dsmax/maya benchmark and the Nvidia card outperforms the ATI part by 20%+ in every test ! (I'm talking non-professional gaming cards here). Nvidia just has better OGL performance. FarCry and HL2 are both D3d titles, and well…Doom3 is OGL.
For the record I have a hard time believing the X800 will outperform the 6800 by ~40%. That is a bigger difference than the early 9800/5900 comparisons we saw a year ago. And the 5900->6800 jump in shader performance is much greater than the 9800->X800 move.
Oh well…Time to get myself home and try out tribes 2 now that I have a working cd key
