Halo Custom Edition

Though there are still no indications that Halo 2 will make its way to the PC, yesterday's Bungie.net story on Halo editor plans (story) has vague mention of plans for a PC release of a "Halo Custom Edition." There is now an unofficial Halo CE FAQ on the Gearbox Forums (thanks HomeLAN Fed) clarifying, among other things, that this will not include any single player content. This project is fleshed out further in this GameSpy Q&A with Gearbox Software's Marc Tardif, where Marc describes the projects release as coming: "Very, very soon." Here's the deal:

First of all, it's not so much an update to the old software as a release of new software, which is free to Halo PC customers.

There are two parts to the new software. One part is a new executable and set of data called "Halo Custom Edition" (haloCE.exe) which will reside in its own separate directory. This new executable includes lots of new features, improvements, and capabilities. It's essentially a collection of many of the things the Gearbox Halo team has developed since the title launched.

Things included in the new executable are "Fast Shaders" (improves performance up to 60% on pixel shader hardware), improved network code (reduces the incidence of player "warping"), and lots of new features that provide options for players to improve their multiplayer games. Perhaps, most importantly, however, the new executable allows end users to play a potentially endless volume of new content created with the Halo Editing Kit.

The other part is the Halo Editing Kit (HEK). The HEK is an exciting package of tools, source material and tutorials that will allow modification makers to bring their own visions to life within the Halo engine.

Halo Custom Edition (HaloCE.exe) and the supporting data is about 200mb and the HEK is about 250mb.

Sorry, but Halo's single player game is far less interesting than, say, either NOLF, or HL. OK, so Halo looked better, but the rinse-repeat level designs were ridiculously lame. co-op, for the most part, alleviates this issue, as you and your buddy end up trying to solve identically-set rooms more efficiently than before.

and beating the final level on Legendary is worth the effort, but I don't have the skillz to pull that off without my co-op buddy to save my ass in a nasty firefight.

basically, until this patch brings back co-op (and with their netcode being unable to manage 4 people on a lan, I doubt it'll manage 20 critters), the best part of Halo has been carved out of the game. I'll stick to playing this on my Xbox, thank you.
