We got our first roof estimate back yesterday... at just short of $9000 I'm still suffering from sticker shock. We have another roofer coming to assess the job today, but I'm imagining we are probably looking at the same ballpark. This certainly tempts one to try the home handyman route, but while I know roofing is something some especially handy homeowners can actually accomplish, I am pretty confident that my lack of confidence in my skills in this area is quite well founded.

Because might does not make right, and being the top dog in the world means you have to be damn careful about how you utilize that power. That or you just conquer everyone and hold them under your thumb until they revolt and slaughter your entire country. Take your pick. (Yes, heavy doses of sarcasm there)

As for the mosque incident -- must've been different reports than the ones I heard. A hospital, a place of worship, school, etc. is only a valid safe area as long as it's not being used for active combat. As soon as those shots were fired at an enemy from the mosque the entire thing became a target. Frankly we could've leveled it and been within our rights. Instead we took out a single turret where hostile fire was coming from (which, as above, is the proper response -- snipers would've been better, but that's just not feasible).

Essentially it's about taking the moral high ground. I'm not a fool -- the virtuous path is not always going to be taken in times of war (or otherwise) for a variety of reasons. Some of them are valid. Some are not. I sincerely question that the torturing of Iraqi prisoners is one of the valid ones.
