We got our first roof estimate back yesterday... at just short of $9000 I'm still suffering from sticker shock. We have another roofer coming to assess the job today, but I'm imagining we are probably looking at the same ballpark. This certainly tempts one to try the home handyman route, but while I know roofing is something some especially handy homeowners can actually accomplish, I am pretty confident that my lack of confidence in my skills in this area is quite well founded.

Do yoruself a favor and head over to your local homecenter and price this stuff out

As jack shit said, the prices include labor.

In the case of the plywood, that would include ripping out the old sheet and replacing it with a new one. Preferably on a non-rainy day without anyone falling through your impromptu skylight.

As for the shingles -- take a square of shingles, haul them up to your roof, and put them down straight with proper overlap, and nail them in by hand.

Yes, all of this is doable by DIYers, but if you're not going that route then comparing price quotes from a contractor against quotes from a big box store is missing a rather large percentage of the equation.
