DoJ Goes Pirate Hunting

Justice Department Announces International Internet Piracy Sweep (thanks Mike Martinez) has word that there's a massive global pirate hunt currently underway:
Attorney General John Ashcroft announced today the most far-reaching and aggressive enforcement action ever undertaken against organizations involved in illegal intellectual property piracy over the Internet. Beginning yesterday morning, law enforcement from 10 countries and the United States conducted over 120 searches worldwide to dismantle some of the most well-known and prolific online piracy organizations.

“Intellectual property theft is a global problem that hurts economies around the world. To be effective, we must respond globally,” Attorney General Ashcroft said. “In the past 24 hours, working closely with our foreign law enforcement counterparts, we have moved aggressively to strike at the very core of the international online piracy world.”

Operation Fastlink is the culmination of four separate undercover investigations simultaneously being conducted by the FBI, coordinated by the FBI Cyber Division, and the U.S. Department of Justice, coordinated by the Computer Crimes and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) of the Criminal Division. As a result of Fastlink, over 120 total searches have been executed in the past 24 hours in 27 states and in 10 foreign countries. Foreign searches were conducted in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden as well as Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Operation Fastlink is the largest multi-national law enforcement effort ever directed at online piracy. Nearly 100 individuals worldwide have been identified by the investigation to date, many of whom are the leaders or high-level members of various international piracy organizations. As the investigations continue, additional targets will be identified and pursued.

This thread is going completely off-topic, which was involved pirating software, but as ppl as you feel the need to spout incoherent and nonsensical statements, I am quite happy to respond to those statements.

"President can declare anyone an Enemy combatant, at which time they waive all rights..."

"The fact is, there is no provision in the PATRIOT act which had any power to halt 9/11. The only thing which would have, would have been the current administration following up on the leads the FBI, CIA BOTH had concerning fundamentalist islamists in flight training"

Quite the contrary, that first provision could have halted 9/11 right there. However, neither the CIA nor the FBI could act on their leads alone; they were not allowed to cooperate in taking any of the flight-school terrorists down, and they did not have powers LATER granted in the Patriot Act to INTERVENE in the terrorist's training. After all, the terrorists were simply exercizing their rights! However, if they could have been declared ENEMY COMBATANTS, it would have been over in no time at all. There is certainly a place for debate about whether this is appropriate power for the government to have, considering its possibility for abuse, but it sure could have stopped 9/11. So what the hell do you want, security or complete liberty? You decide. Just don't keep blaming the current administration for things it is doing to protect YOU, and that YOU are clamoring that it should have done.

Another thing which would have done wonders to stop 9/11 would have been: Scrambling jet fighters into the air from one of the 11 military bases the planes passed over (after they were known to have been hijacked) to blow up the offending aircraft. That, is the official policy, but was somehow trumped.

Oh yes, I'm sure the "official policy" is to immediately blow up all hijacked aircraft. Funny how it's never been done before in the history of hijackings. I can see the headlines now: "President Bush orders hijacked domestic passenger airlines fired upon without negotiation, hundreds of innocent civilians die!" Wouldn't that have been a smart move. And when Bush tried to say they would have been flown into the towers of the World Trade Center if not, you would have laughed at the "ridiculousness" of his claims.
