Battlefield 2 Revealed

Battlefield 2 Revealed on Computer Gaming World (thanks Frans) teases the full announcement of the next installment in the Battlefield series in their July 2004 print issue:

That's a tentative title, of course. The game isn't a direct follow-up to Battlefield 1942 or Battlefield: Vietnam. Instead, it jumps forward to the world of modern warfare. The sequel will feature the latest in modern small arms, heavy weapons, and fighting vehicles -- M-4 carbines with IR scopes; M-60 machineguns with steadying bipods; M-1 tanks with reactive countermeasures; and of course, much more.

WW2 Online was pushed out, before it was complete. They wanted to get it on the shelves in time for the D-Day anniversery, regardless of whether or not the finished product was "finished" or not (which it was not).

It was like paying to play a beta version of the game.... the graphics were choppy and the controls were akward, but not only that.... more than half of the advertised features were not included.

I quit playing and about a year later, decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and signed up again only to find that nothing was improved upon.

That's when I discovered the Battlefield series and have been playing that ever since.

I don't care what improvements claim to be "in the works" on WW2 Online, the bottom line is they were in a rush to get it on the shelves as soon as possible and coding and the actual development of the game, went to the wayside, all in the name of a "quick release".

For some reason I have a sonorous voice after some coffee in the morning, and have been known to belt out "Let's get to work!', 'That one's done', 'You got a job for me?' etc.. at work.

I'm happy with my SB Live! Value. All I have is 2 medium sized stereo speakers and I get ok sound with those. Positional sound works.. like I can hear to the left, right, forward and kind of behind of my character. Why upgrade?

Cutedge: Ah, I might consider a new sound card when I do a major upgrade in a year or so. I never had audio problems that locked up computer like that before. My current motherboard doesn't use nforce. It is older than that. VIA chipset (KT333). :I

Also, I use Linux so I like to use old soundcards for driver support.

3 years--WWIIOL went live I believe June 6, 2001--the D-Day anniversary (totally uncoincidentally).
I'm not on it, but my friend is. He says there seem to be around 10,000+ players. Many more units, working Navy, improved graphics (inf animations are now no longer a joke). The biggest problem it has is still the 64-player limit. The engine can only show you 64 players in your area at a time...but it's not the 64 closest. A tank with 4 inf riding it comes into your area and you may see a truck, an AT gun, and 3 inf next to you disappear. It seems totally random.

Many people think it's time they moved on in years to a later phase of the war. Fighting 1940 for 3 years has grown thin. I'm sure the introduction of the US and Russia (1942 anyone?) along with removal of the 64 unit limit would boost their numbers.

Also, my onboard sound has EAX. You do, however, have to jump through hoops to get it to work on the MSI. Basically, after installing all the drivers for the nforce board, you have to get the AC97 driver from the people who made it and install that. Then, all your settings that are supposed to be there (and aren't) are there and working, including switching the ports for 5.1.

Why upgrade the sound card if I don't have a fancy speaker setup?

Because the SBLive is prone to massive compatability problems and generally is a pain to work with. I mean, I dug mine and was happy I had it until suddenly every game had problems with it. Dune would hard lock, half the games don't initialize the EAX correctly (including BFV) and it just wouldn't work right anymore. So I'm using my onboard and suddenly everything just works.

I don't even use my 5.1. I have two speakers and a sub. I'm just saying that the SBLive has problems, and at first I blamed the game devs. Then, after every game had problems, it occured to me that it might be that the SBLive just has problems.

Hopefully they will actually add stuff to the game instead of rehashing what they already have in place.

You're calling BF boring over WW2 online? I checked out the 7 day trial of that and only used it for a day. The game was insanely boring. Setting up long lists of controls for each vehicle and memorizing every control in that game is boring to me. I don't want to change gears in the tank, I just want to play. This along with the vast amounts of empty space on maps made for an extremely boring game.

Wow, WWIIO is still alive? I bought it the day it came out a almost 4 years ago, and I liked it, but it seemed as though it wasn't even a beta version, so many bugs and lack of content. oh well, it slowly got better with every patch. How is it now? How many people are playing?

I actually played WWIIO for about a year and had fun. But you got to join a squad to really enjoy it.

Fronts concentrates fighting so you don't end up chasing flags over the whole map. Boring!

I hope they fix the gameplay in this one. I can't fucking believe they had all that time with BFV and fucked it up. HOw about an actual front instead of people hopping all over the place capping flags. It's like a game of cat and mouse. Stupid! And it shows how bad it is when the browswer for an ONLINE GAME can't even sort by ping. Pathetic!
