Out of the Blue

I had along-overdue visit with the eye doctor yesterday, though it turns out my glasses prescription hasn't changed (I'm nearsighted), so the delay was of no consequence. I forgot, however, to try to satisfy my curiosity when he asked me if I had any questions, because I wanted to ask him his thoughts on that LASER eye surgery (I'm guessing he gets that a lot). I will follow-up with him on this directly soon enough, but I decided to lay some groundwork on the web... searching for "LASER eye surgery problems" (naturally the aspect of this I am most curious about) turned up enough of an abundance of results to turn anyone off to the prospect. A more refined search for "Custom LASIK problems" was much less pessimistic, though, with the majority of hits from eye doctor sites discussing potential complications. Along the way I learned that the Custom LASIK is also capable of coping with astigmatisms too (though mine is considered quite mild to start with), so it's possible I'm a candidate for this. At this point I admit to still being a bit doubtful about all this... I'm not much of a gambler, and I'm reluctant to risk my vision in order to take the chance on improving it, but I am still tugged by curiosity, so if anyone has any links or information about the pros and cons of this procedure, I'd be very interested.

That is the problem. Ignorant idiots like yourself demonize the desires the of the homosexual populace, making this whole issue about greedy gays. They don't want "special rights". They just want to be able to marry or join in union of someone they love, just like all the straight people.

I didn't demonize anyone, and I didn't start calling anyone names either, you lowbrow jizzmop. I didn't call anyone greedy, either.

Proponents of redefining marriage to include same-sex unions DO INDEED want special rights. They want the right to redefine marriage to include their goals. They don't want rights "just like all the straight people," because straight people don't have the right to marry someone of their own sex either.

Your intolerance of their love and their lifestyle disallows them from getting the rights they deserve as people.

I have plenty of tolerance for their love and their lifestyle. What I don't have tolerance for is a) redefining marriage to suit anyone's whim, and b) "in your face homosexuality," where I not only have to tolerate their lifestyles, I also have to tolerate "gay pride" parades.

I don't want to see "gay pride" parades any more than I want to see "the big dick club" parades or "flelchers parades" or any somesuch.

They don't "deserve" the right to redefine marriage into something it isn't. Marriage is a union between man and woman, always has been, always should be. Hell, polygamy has a better argument imo than same-sex unions, at least polygamy has (ubiquitous) precedent.

And by the way, numbskull, if you actually read the story, it said that 6 out of 10 people polled said that being homosexual was "going against the will of God". You call that tolerance? Sure, it also says in the article that 6 out of 10 are sympathetic to the gay community.

Again with the ad hominems, is that the best you can do? Okay, while we're playing this game, you give analingus to pigs. Gee, this is productive... As for 6 out of 10 people believing that homosexuality is "going aganst the will of God," I don't see how these people, with their beliefs, are somehow exceptions to the rule of tolerance. Do you have a problem accepting their beliefs, their lifestyle? How very neanderthalic of you. Btw, before you even try going there, I range in belief between atheism and agnosticism, I'm not a Christian.

People are willing to accept homosexuality as long as it doesn't come anywhere near them. They're too afraid of their own sexuality to comfortable.

Freudian projection theories? Are you serious? Oh yeah, that's such a valid argument, no really. Freud (aka quack of the century) just made that up as a way to pathologize anyone who disagreed with him. A clever carny trick, but nothing more. Let's see, according to Freud people who oppose murder are closet murderers, people who oppose pedophilia are closet pedophiles, etc. etc. ad infinitum.

I don't have a problem with homosexuals, although I personally find contemplating the practice repugnant (especially buggery - where is it written that being attracted to men requires jamming one's dick up their asses?). I know, the word "tolerance" is supposed to mean that I shouldn't find the practice instinctively disgusting (or at least, I should be 'modern' enough to refrain from saying so), but in my mind, that isn't what tolerance is about. Tolerance SHOULD be about being willing to live and let live, not about thought control.

In Canada yes, in America no, or perhaps you haven't heard of the various states banning gay marriage and president fucktard wanting an actual constituional amendment to keep it illegal.

No, in Canada marriage was redefined to include same-sex unions, in America the definition of marriage has not been redefined, and homosexuals have EXACTLY the same marriage rights as anyone else.

If gay men wanted to marry straight women, and lesbians wanted to marry straight men, they wouldn't be gay would they?

What does this have to do with homosexuals being denied the same rights as heterosexuals? NOTHING. The issue isn't homosexuals having their rights denied, it's homosexuals NOT LIKING WHAT MARRIAGE IS because it isn't what they want it to be. I don't mean to compare bestiality to homosexuality in general, but in this instance the shoe fits - bestialists can't marry their dogs, but this isn't a denial of their rights, it's just the NATURE OF MARRIAGE. Marriage is a union between woman and man, not between man and dog or woman and lamppost, etc.

How is wanting to marry someone you love - regardless of gender - a "special" right?

Because marriage is not a union between woman and woman, it's a union of woman and man.

I tend to think of those who oppose gay marriage as providing a "special" form of oppression. All people are created equal, just some moreso than others, is that it?

I don't believe that all people are created equal, any more than anyone with two brain cells to rub together should. Isaac Newton and Jessica Simpson were not created equal. I do of course believe in equal protection under the law.

Allow me to clue you, and the rest of the boneheaded bigots into something, pal. Marriage is not a sacred institution.

According to you it isn't according to others it is, and this is entirely irrelevant. Again, we see the tolerant champion of liberal virtue initiating name-calling. Okay, you empty-headed propagandized liberal nazi, enlighten me with your parroted wisdom.

People didn't start marrying for love untill around the end of the Italian Renaisannce and even then that was a very tiny minority of the affluent, as they were the only ones who could afford to do so. Marriage for the vast majority of people was more akin to a corporate merger and done so for the mutal benefit of both families. It was closer to a business transaction than some sacred thing. This still exists to a considerable degree the world over today.

I'll concede all that for the purposes of argument, because I could give a rat's ass. I can ignore the history of chivalry and romantic attachment for the nonce.

Last but not least, if marriage is so fucking sacred let's see president fucktard propose to make divorce illegal and adultery a jailable offense and see how well that goes over with the masses. Yeah, I'm sure we'd see how "sacred" marriage is then. Not to mention Neil Bush would have to go prison (where he belongs with the rest of the family).

When you're done beating this strawman, let me know. Yaaawn. I don't particularly like Bush, so I can't be baited with the ole partisan trap.

What alternate universe is this America in because I'd sure like to see it.

Well, let's hash out some sure signs of intolerance. I propose anti-homosexual violence and intimidation as a good start. Perhaps I was exaggerating with my figure, but surely you don't think more than an infinitesmally small portion of the American public engage in homosexual-bashing, do you?

I sure hope you aren't going to point to some damned opinion poll as a sign of intolerance. I sure hope we can find something more concrete than that. People are entitled to their opinions, and this includes the opinion that homosexuality is immoral (I don't really believe this, I'm more of the "homosexuality is strange/repugnant - depends on the flavor as to which" crowd).

"Three quarters of the American population <hot air snipped>

Yawn. Is there some rule that says democracies are void when they believe in or vote for things liberals don't like?
