Myst IV Revelation Revealed

Ubisoft sends along the announcement of Myst IV Revelation, the next installment in the Myst franchise, due this fall. The first Myst IV screenshots can be found on Jucaushii.ro. Here's the announcement:

Montreal Studio Set to "Reveal" the Next Title in the MystŪ Franchise

SAN FRANCISCO - April 5, 2004 - Ubisoft, one of the world's largest videogame publishers, today revealed the critically acclaimed and best-selling MystŪ franchise will launch its newest adventure, MystŪ IV Revelation, this fall. Peter Gabriel, world-renowned recording artist, worked in collaboration with award-winning composer Jack Wall to create the game's immersive and ambient soundtrack.

"We are excited to announce Myst IV Revelation and proud that it comes from our own Ubisoft Montreal studios," said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft Inc. "Myst IV Revelation will only add to the strength of the Myst franchise, which continues to lead the Adventure category in critical acclaim, fan following, and sales."

Within the visually awe-inspiring world of Myst, a gripping family drama will slowly unfold. A little girl disappears, her two brothers are suspected, and it is clear that their story is far from over. Players will escape into the adventure as they attempt to solve the mystery and discover the fate of the two villainous brothers, Sirrus and Achenar. Understanding their motives is the key to the investigation which will lead to a true "revelation."

"Myst IV Revelation will take players into the twisted minds and worlds of two evil brothers, deep inside an intense family drama, and immerse them within a visually stunning environment," said Genevieve Lord, producer at Ubisoft. "The game is simply a 'must-have' for Myst fans and will also appeal to new players. The storyline is very suspenseful, the puzzles are compelling, and the music, produced by Jack Wall in partnership with Peter Gabriel, will create an unparalleled experience."

I still have my note pad from the orginal Myst train ride:
right
left
right hmmm, start over...
right
left
left Aha!
straight goddamnit! start over....etc.
left
straight ferchrissakes...
right
straight
right I swear I'm gonna kill someone soon...
left
left
right ARGHHH!!!!!!!!!

Since it was the first game I played I enjoyed it probably because I didn't know any better and it did have great atmosphere but I don't know if I could go through similar events like the train without feeling like I'm being cheated. It was more like excessive micro-management than puzzle solving.

Wazootyman once again delivers a clean and extremely clever post... cheers!

I am a huge fan of the Myst series, but URU was a huge disappointment. This is Myst 4 because they are trying to forget URU. JK.

I actually enjoyed the gameply of Riven and Exile much more than URU's clunky 3d movement.

There were people in Myst?

Oh, right, FMV hidden in little books that made no sense.

Er, I thought Raven Shield was pretty fun actually. Of course, I just bought it recently so they've had plenty of time to patch it...

#23,

Not to rain on your parade, but you do know that UBI Montreal is the team responsible for the bug ridden farce that is Rainbow Six: Raven-Shield. UBI has a horrible track record for buying game franchises and using their own programmers to create the next in the series instead of the original development house. Look at Raven-Shield, and Warlords IV just to start... URU didn't exactly impress me, especially with the bs surrouding the online section of it. No, if UBI is involved, this will be a piece of crap that's just trying to make money off by doing a hack job on a brilliant franchise. (Just like URU was, now that I think of it.)

lick off your cheeto encrusted fingers

Cheetos make me wretch.

I remember the scene in the first Myst with the butterfly. I was too drunk for the rest of it. I threw it away.

I can't believe all you losers played this game. Does it give you enough time to lick off your cheeto encrusted fingers as you take breaks to watch the end of your latest star trek reruns on UPN?

You get the Fredrikson award of Trollhood (2nd class). Awarded whenever you guys make me smile...

Heh, trolls are funny.

Anyway, the fourth installment is looking mighty fine so far. Here's hoping that Ubi Montreal (who is dev-ing the game, NOT Cyan Worlds -- this could be an excellent sign seeing their recent track record) doesn't have a media blowout like Myst 3 did. Let's not solve a puzzle before the game is released again, eh?

I just watched the trailer and now I'm starting to doubt that it's going to be full 3d. Looks like the Myst 3 engine with a cool particle system. Maybe it'll be a 2d / 3d hybrid like Silent Hill. That'd be kinda dissapointing...

#10: I'm pretty certain that it's going to be full 3D, just judging from those shots. Here's how I look at it: either those are screens of just average 360 2d renderings, or they are screens of well above average 3d environments. If their past games are anything to go by, I don't think CYAN would settle for simply average visuals. Plus they already developed a superb 3d engine for URU, so it would make no sense not to use it.

...Myst.

Say what you will ;P, but I love the Myst series. Excluding the initial "Wow" factor of the first one, I do think the most recent title is easily the best in the series.

Wondering if they are going back to pseudo-3D,
Ray
