Anyways, getting back to what the original article had to do with...
I wonder if a developer could make money off of fan created content by combining aspects of a couple of different game genres? For example, take an online game like Star Wars Galaxies and sell it, but don't charge a monthly fee for it. Release simple to use editing tools like those that came with NWN and set up a website like Neverwintervault to host mods and user created content and charge customers for download access to that. The top ten (or 50 or whatever) vote getting user created mods could become "official" mods for which the creative teams or author could receive a licensing fee based upon the number of downloads to encourage quality user content creation. It might be an interesting idea for a developer to try.
