Far Cry Patch Plans

On the eve of the availability of Crytek's first-person shooter, there's news of plans for the first Far Cry patch on GameSpot (thanks Ant). According to the report: "The patch will be released this Thursday, and it will resolve compatibility issues between the US and Canada, as well as repair multiplayer damage issues. Ubisoft will release an online tutorial for Far Cry's Sandbox editor tomorrow, in addition to a quick-save patch in mid-April."

"You're just another typical dumbass foreigner."
With attitudes like that, who'd ever expect terror to reach your nation?? WHO?
I am Canadian. Last time I went to the hospital, I had a broken finger. Total wait time: 2 minutes! And I wasn't waiting either, I was filling out a form so I wouldn't have to pay a fucking penny. Same service in the States without health insurance (like 15% of US population): Bankrupt!
The patriot act gives your police and government the ability to deem any citizen of any nation of the world, without criminal investigation to be an enemy combatant - subject to iummediate, nonrepresented incarceration wihtout trial - unless you count the no-red-cross-or-amnesty-international-access military puppet tribunals - complete with execution! The FBI, and local police have complete access to your phone records, and your library records, and now can get wire taps for telephones without warrant. The FBI, and CIA are allowed to search your home completely without your knowledge, consent, or a court order (warrant or otherwise), and are allowed to repeat this process ad nauseum. Your grain and milk is full of so much steroids, hormones, drugs to produce more milk, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides that the cancer rate in the States for males is 50%. For females, it is 36%. That's right, for drinking your "it does a body good" juice with Monsanto(tm) fortifications, half of the American men posting on this board will get cancer. Staph infection? No problem! Pay a doctot $10,000 to tell you it is antibiotic resistant, and you are going to die! Why? Monsanto(tm)'s super-juice for cows causes massive infections and, you guessed it, ludicrous administration of antibiotics! Udder infections due to too much milk production lead to pussy, scabbed sores on the udders - NO PROBLEM!!! THE CORPORATION WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU - by turning a blind eye and sucking puss/scabs into your milk supply along with the milk! GREAT! Every single ecosystem and natural system in the whole god damn world is in decline because of American corporations - which are no longer liable for poisining Americans with lead, PCBs, Arsenic, Pig shit in your drinking water, CO, Sulphur dioxide, mercury, nor are they responsible for cleaning up those messes - YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE HARD AT WORK! Democracy no longer exists in the states, and your citizens have bent over, grabbed the cock of fascism and rammed it unlubricated up their own asses - and loved it! MORE MORE MORE!!! Your democracy-happy president funded - again - the overthrow of Jean Bertrand Aristide in Haiti, and are considering bringing back the Duvalier brothers. Why? Duvalier brothers are good for American business. Your presidents family, along with Coca-Cola, Ford, IBM, GM, and Disney all profiteered via the nazis in ww2, and do the same thing now in Iraq.
Other than low taxes, and the seemingly god given right to spout off on how america rules, WTF is good about your country?
Oh yeah - You cockmasters who download games are scum. Go fuck yourselves, and quit playing video games if you are not willing to support the companies and people in them who stick their neck out so you can jack off to good graphics. PC games will die because of idiots like you. Furthermore, most of you cocksuckers are plugging downloading games while plugging America as some fucking pious capitalist heaven, but don't care to particiapte in capitalism wherein risks (like sometimes getting burned on a bad game) are inherent. Hypocritical, non-thinking, party-line towing dog-marrying shitbags the likes of you should just kill themselves and save the food for the humans who will need it.

Liberal (TM) : THE PUNK OF THE 2000s! 99% integrity free! Now with added hypocrisy! PLUS: You choose the shitty music!

STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE, GET OUT OF THAT BED AND GET DOWN ON THE FLOOR, GET OUTSIDE RIGHT NOW, RIGHT HERE: GET DOWN ON THE CEMENT, I DONT CARE IF YOU'RE NUDE, GET DOWN ON THE CEMENT, I DON'T CARE IF ITS FREEZING! WHERES THE DRUGS, WE KNOW YOU GOT THE DRU

I have to say Far Cry is one of the first games with no Quick save option that didn't actually bother me. Almost everytime you have to redo a part because you die... The AI actually does react differently. I think at one point I must have tried 8 or 9 different ways to get through one part and the AI never reacted the same way twice. In areas connected by 2 entrance for instance if you stay in the same area too long, they flank you and sneak behind you. I think that's the so-called Advanced AI at work. You face them from one door, they exit on the other side and surprise you. I know I have not seen this behavior in any other games before. I think some bots have a more complex subroutine than others. If every enemy were as adept as the toughest ones the game would bog down even on killer hardware. They have to make some compromise considering the amount of calculations it takes to make a believable AI and make it distinct for every bot. That is simply impossible to achieve with current technology.
Some bots are completely dumb and some which the developers chose react more believably. The developers cannot imagine what every gamers would do to solve a particular problem so if you decide to do something that wasn't expected from the programmers, the AI indeed will look dumb. Even with its flaws I think Far Cry far surpasses anything I have played before. Let's see if Doom3 or HL2 can do better.

60. It's getting hot in here! Mar 24, 2004, 10:58 m00t

*doles out flame retardent suits*

Anyway, on to the topic I give a shit about:
AI programming is "hard". It is time consuming. It is easily broken. Nothing will ever come close to resembling a human's intelligence in our life time. Simply can't be done.
We can mimic human behaviour, but we will never see a machine that becomes truly inspired.

That said, it's easy to make something become alert when one of it's buddies gets popped. It's pure laziness and lack of foresight in design that it's not in virtually all games now.
The repeatedly fooling the same AI problem is simple to fix as well.
"Gee, I thought I heard something several times. I should get a squad to sweep the area."
Set a hard cap or better have an incremental value that increases each time you dupe the AI. Give a signal strength to whatever is tipping the AI off (sound, visual, whatever. How close he came to seeing you) and increment the 'how soon until I get a squad to bust your ass' value that slowly bleeds off over time (becoming less tense and going back to 'I'm a bored guard' mode). If the player exceeds a threshhold they remain suspicious and call in a report or investigate the area more thoroughly.

THESE ARE SIMPLE THINGS TO PROGRAM if you plan them in advance. Seriously. Not hard. You could even do it in a scripting language tacked on to the game if you put the right API interfaces in.

On another note:
Patriot Act did near nothing for the Police. It gave the federal law enforcement a lot more power, though. Like not having to get a sign off from a judge before doing a wide number of things (wire tapping, raids under certain circumstances, holding people without trial). And it's getting more, too. It is not a pleasant thing.

Regarding most of the comments on this thread:
Knee-jerk reactions tend to come from uneducated or uninformed people. Think about the things you say before you spout your vitriol.

Speaking from experience? No? Cite sources then, or learn to shut your mouth. It'll make you look like less of an idiot. Last I checked, the ONLY thing that might soon be legal here that isn't in the US is Marijuana use.

"And you are another typical fuckwit apologist. And they don't like us because we are the kings of the hill and they suffer from underdog syndrome."

I would say more likely than not people don't like you because you suffer from king of the hill syndrome. It's not because you're a big country or a powerful one and they want to be one. Hell, I certainly don't ever want Canada to be a military power. Rather, it's because you feel the need to run around telling everyone you're better than them because you're american.

As for your little blurb about our health care system, you obviously don't know a single thing about it. I'm sure it's nice to -think- that you know everything, but it's high time you learned that you don't. The longest I've ever had to wait for anything in our health care system was two weeks to see a specialist for a cosmetic (read: unnecessary) procedure.

Crappy service? And I'm sure you have some experience to back that claim up with? No? Why doesn't that surprise me. I had a feeling you were talking out of your ass. Every time I've been in the hospital for one reason or another, they've gone far out of their way to see to my needs and comforts WITHOUT charging me an arm and a leg for it.

A simple rule of thumb here, for you and for whoever it was that commented about the patriot act and whatnot. Do not presume to speak as an authority about what it's like to live in a country if you've never actually LIVED there. Dumbasses.

And you seem to suffer from the head-up-your-ass syndrome... and you may just have a superiority complex

Comparing the socialistic welfare system (which varies from country to country) with the system in the US isn't as easy as some of you make it out to be. Both have their pro's and con's

Shut up and discuss Far Cry, will you?

"Hows the wait in your socialist paradise?"

I'm canadian and i'm still waiting for my rebate check from the feds since i havn't been sick a day in my life. Why should i pay for Ernie down the street who likes to extreme ski down a mountain-top and break his neck? I dunno, i really like the idea of a user-pay society.

"The only REAL way to test a PC game before buying is to download and try it. If after a day or two I'm still playing it, I buy. That is what the scene is about, not about providing free games and never supporting the makers. That's a misconception that many preachy people that like to believe they are morally superior are foolish enough to believe. "

you are not a tad naive, aren't you?
and I we should be foolish enough to believe your wonderful tale of the good responsible warez consumers who buy every game, that is already on their HD for free? good morning wonderland.

In truth, the US, with its drug testing and the patriot act,
for example; is more intrusive in your personal life
than the canadian government.

Can you tell me what new law enforcement powers the Patriot Act gave police? In short little to none. And the Act sunsets. Fuckin dumbass foreigners.

Drug testing!??! Private companies are the ones who do random drug testing.

Quality health care? Hows the wait in your socialist paradise? Several months for an appt? Crappy service? Look at the UKs godawful socialist healthcare system, more people are going to private doctors because the wait and service sucks.

You're just another typical dumbass foreigner.

"They aren't genius, don't always hit you in first shot, they can be duped, and they perform some cool flanking maneuvers sometimes. They respond to gunshots and to their buddy getting shot (usually)."

And if you are not so freaking jaded that you are not picking out every little flaw? They immerse you into the moment in the gameworld, that they are the enemy, and they are coming after your ass.

Retard those were compliments. They can be duped in a convincing manner, as in they keep looking for you for awhile.

making a minor mistake?
which would be what? someone sounding the alarm?

How about accidentally moving through a save point (since they are invisible and unpredictable) as you are being killed, or followed by more guys than you could ever handle? If there are going to be save points they ought to be clearly marked.
