It's not that absurd. I remember when in store release dates were supplied for almost all video games - this is in Sega Genesis' hayday, and you could 100% of the time get any game two weeks to 5 days in advance of hte release date, as the publishers shipped the games to the stores really early to facilitate exact release dates. This is the same as going to an indy video store, and finding moveis and DVDs on the shelves a week before they are released - which you can do here. The video game industry stopped giving exact release dates, and started supplying release dates as most publishers agreed nerds will always give other nerd video games early if they can.
edit: I am happy with shipping days, as if you REALLY want a game, you can usually get it the shipping day, or the day after - not "Lets all wait an additional unnecessary period so all games always come out on the same day... yeah that sounds great!"
