Beware the Ides of March... Oh to hell with that, all due apologies to Caesar, I and many other gamers have been looking forward to today since it was announced as the release date for both Battlefield Vietnam and Unreal Tournament 2004. And for those looking to get in some new gaming without tapping their wallets, today is also the release date for the third Far Cry demo. When it rains it pours. Meanwhile, I've seen ads saying that March 16(?) is the actual BF:V date, but I am holding out hope that this is just a hedge, and that the game can be found today.

BF:V vs UT2k4

I read and article saying that the "Medic" class that existed in BF:1942 is conspicuously absent from BF:Vietnam. This was a big disapointment for me because the medic was my favorite class to play in BF:1942. In fact, I never could see an advantage in playing an assault character class in favor of a medic who can duck behind a corner and heal himself. Maybe the game designers saw this too, but I think the idea of removing a "healer" class altogether was not a good idea. I almost always chose to be the medic or engineer in BF:1942 because I prefered healing my teamates (tanks or health, respectively) and supporting my troops then I did just running and gunning. I'm skeptical as to how the new classes will pan out given this.

On the other hand, I've been enjoying the UT2k4 demo a LOT. The only regret I have with this game is that my aging computer can hardly keep up when there are more than 10 players or so... which seems weird. On the assault maps, I get great FPS during a 4vs4 match, but during a 8vs8 match, I get major problems. I wonder how much this has to do with the extra player models slowing me down vs the extra explosions, gunfire etc. I also wonder if its the server itself that is having more difficulty with the extra players and it is just passing along the poor performance to me vicariously.
