Out of the Blue

Good stuff last night... enjoyed The Sopranos, and loved Curb Your Enthusiasm... please, for any discussion of these shows (the former in particular) in the forums, remember to use the secret text tag for those that must wait.

I was more than ready for the new Sopranos, but also more than ready for spring, but it's snowing at the moment. Oh well, one out of two isn't so bad.

I really don't see an ethical issue with it if you're subscribed to HBO anyway (they're already getting their change) or you really are going to buy the DVD set. Either way you haven't deprived them of anything -- it's not like someone could even claim advertising loss. About the only thing that might be lost is statistics -- the cable/sat operators have the ability to know what you're watching when and could report it. Except that their data is fairly useless since most people don't turn off the boxes when they turn off their TV.

huh? Buffy dies?!! Lol... yeah it is annoying, especially 24 trailers.
I don't have a problem with it either, because I see it for free sooner or later anyway. I'm up to ep14 of Friends etc, and, like you say, Sky have an annoying habit of ruining shows with their trailers. Woo for Telewest no download cap.

I download the latest american shows all the time to watch over here before Sky show them. Sky have a nasty habit of spoiling shows BADLY before they air so i justify downloading them not as being a dirty low down pirate, but rather protecting my interests avoiding spoilers.

I mean, can you remember how they fucked up Buffy in that season where she dies? They showed a blooming gravestone with her name on! Before she died!! How blatantly obvious was it she was gonna die in the next episode.

I dont want shows being ruined like that, so i download them to watch before Sky shows them. I dont find it wrong as i buy the box sets myself as well on DVD when they come out. a VCD or SVCD doesnt compete with a DVD with directors commentary and stuff.

Non serious moral dilema:
Is it ok for a UK resident that doesnt get to see the Sopranos until (... later this year, not sure when ...) to download the eps off BT, given that within a year or so he'll have the dvd box set?! I'd hate to deprive HBO of their hard earned ;P.

Edit: Lol the Exorcist site seems to have been "Blue's Newsed"

Odds are you were always FAT32 -- unless whoever upgraded your system also reformatted your drives. You can convert from FAT->NTFS, but not the other way around.

As for how to do it, you can use the convert.exe program built into NT/XP. Here's the MS Knowledge Base article on it. Looks pretty simple.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307881

I keep meaning to run it on my work PC (Win2k), which was formatted with FAT for some ungodly reason. Of course, since I do all my real work on the Unix servers (I'm a Unix C++ coder) it really doesn't matter that much to me.

Are you on FAT32 or NTFS? If the former -- why?

First: thanks for the suggestions folks.

Two: Good question, Zathrus. I thought I was on NTFS when I originally installed the Hard Drives, but when I check them now, they're both FAT32. I upgraded the CPU & MB last summer and let someone else do it, maybe that's when the change happened. (or I was just wrong in the first place) Is there any easy way to change, or do I have to reformat both drives and reinstall XP? As for XP's defrag, it only defrag's the programs, not the disk itself, so that all apps are contiguous, but there can still be free space between apps. (which is stupid, because the next program you install is automatically fragmented as it fills in the gaps)

I want to move all the programs to the front and move open space to the back; not scattered about the disk like the current XP version does

Are you on FAT32 or NTFS? If the former -- why? Unless you have a really good reason (like dual boot with Win9x or Linux), NTFS is a vastly superior file system. In particular, it doesn't need defragging in any real sense of the term. It's also more reliable and less likely to suddenly blow up on you.

If you're using FAT32 and sticking with it, try one of the ones recommended by the other posters. Sounds like XP's defragger only defragments the files and not the drive as a whole. It could be trying to do some optimization by moving commonly used files/programs to the middle of the disk though (which minimizes seek time, although it's not the fastest transfer rate) which would be very smart.

45. That Pepsi ad Mar 8, 2004, 21:25 Ghengis Khan

That UGO/Pepsi ad that plays the tv commercial full-screen every time I open a new IE Window while Bluesnews is open is the most annoying popup ever! At least normal popups only open once...

Sorry to be so down. It's just...that ad! Geez, it keeps opening! And then I get the stupid Wired/NY Times/whatever else popup that brings their window to the front while I'm trying to read Blues. That's the second most annoying kind of popup ever.

OK the Pepsi ad has stopped now. Perhaps it only pops up 5 times?

OK, I was looking over my web traffic to my website today, and janetsboob is one of the top searches for visitors to my site in March. Back the day after Superbowl I made a comment about it on my site. Got no hits about it till this month, and now it is one of my top linkers from MSN's search.

I get lots of searches for JFK assasination photos and pictures of people with strep throat. Go figure.

A while back I read an article on web robots having some issues with weighing weblogs a little too highly on the importance scale. I also read another article on people affecting how google tracks sites on purpose. An example of this was the whole type 'weapons of mass destruction' in google and hit do I feel lucky.

any suggestions on a good Disk Defragger program?
It's not free, but Diskeeper from Executive is really good. It's the one I'm using now. I used to use O&O, but switched over to Diskeeper when the new version came out. In fairness, I haven't tried the new v6 of O&O however.

30 day trial with Diskeeper, and there's a trial with O&O, but I can't see where it says for how long.

While were on the topic of that person trying to clean up that prog during his startup..

I ran msconfig and under startup I got "nwiz.exe /install".. I think I remember seeing that as spyware during an ad-ware search. But I dont want to disable that if it isnt spyware. Anyone familiar with this prog?

Also, everytime I startup I get a bin folder opening up.. that is empty. I have no idea what its for, and although all I haveto do is close it, its still a little annoying.. Anyone recognize this? I would restart to find out its exact location but I cant right now.

36. odd web search result Mar 8, 2004, 18:47 Earthworm

OK, I was looking over my web traffic to my website today, and janetsboob is one of the top searches for visitors to my site in March. Back the day after Superbowl I made a comment about it on my site. Got no hits about it till this month, and now it is one of my top linkers from MSN's search.

So I went over to MSN's search to see where I ranked for janetsboob, to find out that Blues news is 3rd on the list, due to a comment I made in the forums here about it! Also my site is no longer on the list, I can't say I'm broken up about it. It just seemed really random that my site and Blues showed up so high in the rankings on something old, and completely unrelated to our sites.

Anyway, continue on, nothing to see here. Move along.
