Molyneux on Design

The Future of Games from a Design Perspective on GameSpy offers a recap of a discussion of game design at the DICE Summit given by famed designer Peter Molyneux. Along the way, he offers a simple summary of how good game design is suited to simple summaries:

Molyneux pointed out that whenever you try to tell a friend about a great book or a great movie, they often ask "What's it about?" A game is no different. Successful games can be summed up in one line, no matter how wild or unconventional the final gameplay or technology behind it. For example, Populous is summed up with the idea: "You are a God." "Build your own theme park" is the concept behind Molyneux's Theme Park. The concept is something people can easily grab on to, easily understand -- they know they want to play the game before they even see it. "This is the lynchpin of developing a game," Molyneux explained.

What Molyneux knows about gaming you could write on an atom and then you would only have enough to write if you wrote his name and address. He owes lots of money and is bleeding cash out of his ass.

Summing up successful games in one line huh? Well telling me *You are a God* will not make me want to buy a game. I would want tknow more. The bloke is so far up his own ass its untrue.

Theme Park, its arguably dull sequels nonwithstanding was just an incredible game especially at its time. It had a fatal bug where customers got stuck near the entrance in the Mac version I played, but I still adored the game, to say the least.

I don't know why those fools at Bullfrog, after Molyneux had left, went exploiting the Theme Park series.
They got bought by EA.

I'm looking forward to Fable (this may be the game that pushes me over the edge to buy an Xbox), but I hope it isn't as underwhelming as Invisible War turned out to be

I think I'd be forced to paraphrase that as:
"Successful games can be summed up in one line, no matter how wild or unconventional the line may be."

Sure, you can come up with a one-line description of most games (successful or otherwise), but a lot of the time the line will be completely worthless for actually telling anyone whether the game is any good, unless you make it a heck of a lot more descriptive than he does.

Motyr: You are a soldier in WW2
Call of Duty: You are a soldier in WW2

They're both clearly great...

I was j/k.

Right, right, I forgot about the rats! That was awsome, there was even this submission where you had to kill as many rats as possible.
I don't know why those fools at Bullfrog, after Molyneux had left, went exploiting the Theme Park series. Theme Hospital was one of the best sim games I ever played.

"Populous is summed up with the idea: "You are a God." "Build your own theme park" is the concept behind Molyneux's Theme Park, and "finding wood" is the brilliance that is Black & White."

Peter Molyneux is quite overrated, IMO. I liked Populous and Syndicate... but that was about it, brotha.

I wonder why Warren Spector didn't go and speak at this deal...maybe busy dealing with Thief 3 stuff I guess.
