Unreal Tournament 2004 Gold

Atari sends word that Unreal Tournament 2004 is gold, and that Epic's multiplayer shooter sequel is due in stores "worldwide" on March 15:

Unreal Tournament 2004 was developed by Epic Games in conjunction with Digital Extremes. The game builds on the success of past installments, taking the franchise to the next level with the introduction of the hyper-charged Onslaught mode, the return of the fan-favorite Assault mode, which last appeared in the original Unreal Tournament, and the introduction of land-, air- and space-based vehicles.

Gamers worldwide have already made the free, downloadable official demo of Unreal Tournament 2004 one of the most popular game demo downloads of all time, with more than 1.5 million downloads in the first week of availability. The demo first hit the Internet on Wednesday, February 11, and was distributed on a worldwide scale and is already one of the most played online PC games on the Internet.

In the game, players suit up as the ultimate techno-gladiator of the future, taking their fates into their own hands as they battle up to 32 other players in action-packed, frag-filled arenas. Unreal Tournament 2004 contains new maps for all established game modes, including Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Bombing Run and Double Domination, as well as all new arenas for the new styles of play. In addition, Unreal Tournament 2004 contains all of the maps, mutators and game types -- such as Mutant, Last Man Standing and Invasion -- from Unreal Tournament 2003 and the free downloadable bonus packs for that game.

What are the terms of the $10 manufacturer rebate going to be? I think I still have the instruction booklet for 2003, but not the box.

Both the models and maps of UT2k3 were superior to Q3, by a good margin too. The weapons may be questionable, but they were at least more varied than Q3's rocket/railgun fest -- while I hated some of them, I liked more than I disliked.

I guess you mean by varied, UT2K3's lightning gun/rocket fest instead of a railgun/rocket fest.

The demo was fantastico, can't wait for tons of new levels in both Onslaught and A&D.

As a side note, I'm amazed that 10 or even 20 bucks can stop you from buying any game. 10 bucks is lunch! 10 bucks is a crappy 90 minute movie! This is 2004 not 1904 right? Last I checked, all my wooden nickels don't buy shit.

It's like coupon clipping for groceries... absolutely retarded. If you work one extra hour instead of dealing with crazy schemes, coupons, and rebates, you're probably coming out ahead.

I'm still surprised so many people like this.

Well, for me it's like this; my UT2K3 disc sits in it's box worthless and unused, I can upgrade to UT2K4 for free (with all the rebates) and maybe get some value out of the game, and even if the maybe becomes 'no' then I still don't lose as I paid no money into it. Win - Win

I wanted to like it so much, but it felt bland. Lame vehicles, boring weapons, awful color scheme...

What kind of vehicles were you expecting for a Sci-fi FPS game? I really enjoy all of the vehicles.. each in their own way. That make sense? heh

I agree about the weapons though.. there are several that I don't care for, but there are enough that I don't mind. I wish they had the regular sniper rifle in Onslaught instead of the laser rifle. I suppose it may depend on the particular map.

As for the colors, I don't see a problem with them in any of the demo maps. It's more colorful than games like BF, but it fits this game IMO.

I know everyone thinks I'm crazy, but I still think Halo was more fun.

I really like Halo too, yet I don't like the way it runs on my PC. I enjoyed it on the Xbox though. UT2k4, on the other hand, runs really smooth for me and still looks great.

Edit:
I thought UT2K3 had better models than 2K4. The people look lame, as do the vehicles.

Well, aren't the models from 2k3 going to be included with 2k4? I believe 2k4 includes all the maps and bonus packs from 2k3 along with all the character models. I could be wrong though.

And I thought it was difficult to tell guys apart in the outdoor map at times. When they got a bit far away they were mostly all black.

After medical bills and stuff this month, I'm broke, but I'm still gonna buy this game. I've been playing the hell out of the demo, and I can't wait to get my hands on all the new maps and instagib!!

I just watched the red orchestra tribute video in the guy's sig below.. the video is neat, but the song for the audio is god awful. My ears are bleeding...

While I wouldn't say it's the greatest music, I certainly wouldn't say it made my ears bleed.

Here's the ebworld rebate page: http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/ads/rebates/040504-UnrealTourn04.asp

Anybody know if this is valid for Canadian residents as well? The page doesn't say one way or the other.

crap models, crap maps

crap hud

Uh... right. Whatever. UT2k3 had one of the best HUDs of any game of its time. UT2k4 has gone off and added a bunch of additional, useful options (like different targeting crosshairs per weapon) and is more configurable (and more easily configurable) than any other game out there.

Don't like the game? Fine. Don't buy it. Feel free to spout off your opinions, but don't be surprised when someone with a clue calls you a moron.

Epic has said many times that there will be a 10 dollar rebate that will be in the box for UT2k3 owners
Ahh, ok, so it will be in the UT2K4 box? What do they want for proof of purchase?

I believe you have to send in your game manual or something like that to get the Epic rebate. Also, EBGames stores (not the web site) are running a special where you turn in your UT2K3 CD and any other PC game and you get an additional $10 off. So .....

+ $40 UT2K4
- $20 rebate
- $10 Epic tradein rebate
- $10 EBGames tradein rebate

------

You just pay tax

Of course, since I do not have UT2K3, I am not going to bother digging up details on the tradein and wht one has to do Just go to your local EBGames store and find out the details.

Hate the overarmored look of the bots and players. It's hard to tell your teammates apart buried under all that plating, and it's even hard to tell red vs blue.

I know you don't want flames but... are you color blind? I played a little bit of UT2k3 LAN style, zero problems telling teams apart.

Calling UT2K4 overpriced expansion pack is the best troll EVAR!

Full priced? It was only 20 bucks retail, and I got mine for $15 at Best Buy which had a sale running the same week it was released

Its priced as a full-priced expansion (such as Opposing force for HL, or brood war for SC) except usually , these expansions have CONTENT in them, not jus 5 maps and 2 new weapons etc. so 20$ is a total rip-off for something not even worth the damn download. It was like paying for a patch.

And now, they are nice enough (atleast where i live) to slap '42 and Road to Rome into one pack, and sell it at FULL PRICE, same as NEW games..
gg dice.

EDIT: also, when I say infantry combat sucks, I wasnt talking about the maps, I'm saying it suck because of how the weapons are made hit detection (lack of)etc.

38. UT vs UT2K3 vs UT2K4 Mar 4, 2004, 13:57 Ratty

While UT2K4 is a vast improvement over UT2K3, neither of them capture the magic that was the original UT. UT didn't interest me but I downloaded the demo out of curiosity and to see what the engine looked like. I was hooked within minutes and I still play it almost every day.

Don't like the "icony" weapons, ammo, and powerups, borrowed from Q3. I much prefer the more realistic objects. It's hard to tell the weapons apart. In UT you knew instantly what the ripper was, the sludginator, the sniper rifle. In UT2K3 and 2K4 a lot of the weapons and ammo look too much alike. Hate the overarmored look of the bots and players. It's hard to tell your teammates apart buried under all that plating, and it's even hard to tell red vs blue. In UT you could see their faces and knew which team they were on even from a huge distance.

No flames. This is just my opinion.

I pre-ordered the DVD SE for 40 dollars.

This game is fun. Some people won't like it but you know what? You can't please everyone all the time. I think BF Vietnam will suck, so there.

Quick question, where's the info about the $10 rebate that EPIC gives you? I see the $20 rebate for the ebgames.com but I don't see where it says EPIC will give you a $10 rebate. Any help would be appreciated

Dice lost all their credibility with their 5-map , full priced Road to Rome "Expansion pack" for BF42.

Full priced? It was only 20 bucks retail, and I got mine for $15 at Best Buy which had a sale running the same week it was released. Desert Combat has excellent infantry combat maps such as Basrah's Edge and Lost Village, hence its extreme popularity. I'm fully willing to pay 30-40 bucks every couple of years for an updated genre and engine to my favorite game as long as the improvements are significant. Anyone who's seen the full list of IGN high-res MP videos of BF V can say so. Both Epic and EA are doing this with BF V and UT 2004 btw.
