Sounds like this IS "Towns of Rubi-Ka", just with aliens brought front and center.

ATM I doubt i'll keep playing AO, but its more from my dislike of MMO's than any lack of quality on it's part.

I was an AO player since the launch, so I've been through ALL the big nerfs and such, and through all the big fixes. They've come a long way, no doubts there. When Shadowlands launched, they ran into a bunch of the same problems from the original launch, mostly because the size of the expansion in compared to other MMORPGS was HUGE, and had a ton of wide-reaching effects on things they'd worked to balance before.
They're just now starting to get Shadowlands back in order, and the most recent major patch is making me think it's time to log back in again. Thing is there's still some major issues that aren't obvious till you've been in for a while (some professions have become rather useless since SL, while others have become exploited for a single purpose; also, high-end leveling involves killing one type of mob in one playfield) so my hope is that they clean up some more of these issues before they launch another expansion.
That said... what the hell?!? Whatever happened to "Towns of Rubi-ka"?!?!? |

Yeah it is stable and runs better because there is no where near the same number of players on the server. Bring back the players and I bet some problems will come back as well.

My biggest problem with AO is its a MMO... I just get tired of the same old same old.
AO is also far from perfect, I mean when you buy a perk every 10 levels and you end up with one that almost never hits enemys. It's frustrating. That being said, I realize my perfect game is still 10-20 years away, so I might as well not get too upity about it. There's always dnd and drugs.

Unlike O$I, Funcom is a great company and I have tried to like AO--I played it several times since it was released and I even bought the expansion pack, but I could never get myself to like the game.

I'd reconsider picking up AO again but I still have chronic rectal bleeding from the launch.

I have a feeling AO is about as good as MMO's will get It's true. AO is a great game. There's no excuse for any MMORPG to launch in the state AO did but they've more than made up for it. It looks good, it's stable, it's got the most imaginative production design of any MMORPG - no elves or dwarves, combat is fun and takes team work to succeed. In short, if you can look past their initial mistakes Funcom will reward you with a ton o' entertainment.
I played it for 2 years and quit to play SWG. Big mistake. I may go back for this expansion.

Heh, I swear they are trying to make me stay, I just signed up for my third or fourth (god bless my habit of switching banks and bank cards occasionally) free week. Well in this time they've made some major changes to the game, and I just can't help but feel they are tempting me to stay. I have a feeling AO is about as good as MMO's will get until VR tech is sufficiently cheep and developed.
Maby they just feel a kindship with my spelling inaccuracys and thier own, I must have learned english in finland. I guess it was before I excaped the test facility where they were turning me into an SS shock troop.

I hope future MMORPG designers take note of how critical the launch of these games are. So many games get put out and within the first month most ppl have decided if they will play after the free period ends. If that month has been full of bugs then the answer is obvious.
There are 2 solutions I see.
1. Don't put out the game until it's stable enough to play. (hahahha...HAHAHAHAHHA, wow that was funny)
2. Or give users a 3 month free membership.
Giving ppl free access for 2 more months is peanuts if you can hook them enough to keep paying for 6 more months after that. The worst that can happen is that they choose not to continue after 3 months. I'll bet a lot more ppl quite at the end of a 1 month trial vs ppl quitting after a 3 month trial. It's an insult to expect ppl to pay to play a game that is in serious need of help. SWG is a perfect example.

AO has always been an excellent mmorpg. It's a shame alot of people won't play it because of the rocky release it had years ago.
